I just purchased Mass Effect 2 yesterday on steam. I've had issues since I started the program and have been trying to find a solution, but noone appears to have one that works for me.

The game has similar issues as other people have. Starting with the main menu, there is a stutter every few seconds rendering it difficult to use, and once in game it still pauses every 4-6 seconds making it unplayable. The audio is crisp and smooth and I'm beginning to think this is a CPU issue; however, my PC runs other games such as Crysis and Napoleon: Total War just fine on max settings. It is quite aggravating. Anyways, my system specs are as follows:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (5.1.2600)

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+

Memory: 3.25 GB

DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 9800 GTX+
Display Memory: 512.0 MB
Current Mode: 1280 x 1024 (32 bit) (60Hz)
Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor
Driver Version: 6.14.0011.9745 (English)

Audio: Realtek HD Audio output

Thanks

I believe you must consider an X2 3800 as being below the minimum, and dial everything back to accommodate the CPU's slowness.

I have a similar processor (4050e x2) and can run maxed-out settings at 1600x900 with a Radeon 4770. While I doubt I'm getting a consistent 60 FPS, I've never had stuttering like the OP describes.

I'd put the game in windowed mode (you'll have to dial resolution down a notch, of course), open task manager while the game is running, and sort processes by CPU load. Anything you notice hogging cycles away from ME2? I'd imagine any anti-virus program you're running would be a good first suspect, but anything taking more than a few percentage points of cycles may be what's responsible for gumming up the works.

I've solved my Issue. It turned out that the ASUS motherboard bios was out of date. Re-flashing the bios with the newest version has fixed my issue and I can play the game on maximum settings. I figured it wasn't the CPU as the Xbox doesn't have a very powerful counterpart. Thanks for the help!

Please don't dig up the oldest corpses in the graveyard! If you can't find anything newer than a couple of months old, you're using the crap for horrible on-site excuse for a Search. Use Google or Yahoo and a redirector as per the directions for filling out a problem report (should be in there):

OK. But I just buy the game yesterday and got the same problem with a very same config. Only asking. :alien:

Solved. :wizard: In my case was Nero Media Home the problem.
