Crash on first attempt to run

After installing the game and all seeming to go normally, the game will not run at all.  As soon as either a) I hit Play in the autolauncher or B) launch the
game executable directly, I get about three seconds of black screen and
then the "this program has stopped responding" crash dialog.  Happens
even after a clean reboot to my normal gaming mode, with minimal other
processes running.

Rig is well in excess of the recommended specs
with a quad core 2.66 GHz, 8GB RAM, crossfired ATI HD4870's,
performance RAID 1TB HD.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.  Game is installed to C:\\Mass Effect 2 instead of the default install locality.  Dragon Age runs
flawlessly at very high fps on the same machine. Also, I'm patched to the
latest version of the game, and all my audio and video drivers are up to
date.

Also, makes no difference whether I "run as administrator".

Any help gratefully accepted.

Well, there's easy fix #1 down. :/ Have you tried XP compatibility mode? Wouldn't think it would need it but it's worth a try.

(BTW, Dragon Age isn't much of a guide to ME2; DA uses Bioware's own in-house engine while ME2 uses Unreal Engine. Another UE3 game would actually provide more of a comparison.)

I tried XP compatibility mode on both the launcher and the game executable itself, following this suggestion... no change unfortunately.

I don't have all that many games... besides this and DA:O, I have ME1, Oblivion, and Fallout 3.  All run just fine, but I'm not up on which game uses which engine.

Still totally out of luck here, hoping someone can suggest something useful... will call tech support after work today but my expectations of any progress there are nil.

Edit: Adding the rest of the info requested by the "how to report an issue" thread in this forum.

Have you tried reinstalling the game?

Other games using the Unreal 3.* engine are Mass Effect, Unreal Tournament 3 and Batman Arkham Asylum. If you really want to compare you could download the Batman demo.

That Arkham Asylum demo will also not run on this rig-- I tried that a few months ago and gave up after a similar (but not identical) issue.  There, I'd get the game to load and arrive at the main menu, but when I tried to do anything else, execution slowed to a crawl, a frame per second or less.  Tried all kinds of things but eventually just gave up.

Finally, a little more info.  In the "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working" dialog, the "problem details" show that it's an APPCRASH event with the application name and fault module name both MassEffect2.exe version 1.1.1599.0, with exception code c0000005 and exception offset 00494d15.

Problem solved. If you have two DVD drives, you must install with disc 1 in the lower-lettered drive and disc 2 in the higher lettered drive. So if you're having this problem and have two DVDs, uninstall completely (including the My Documents/Bioware/Mass Effect 2 folder), put the discs in as indicated, and reinstall. It won't even ask you about switching discs, it'll do everything in one swell foop.

Also, the very last post in this thread:

http://social.biowar.../index/792476/5

suggests a very specific update procedure to DirectX. Just to be sure, I did both, and now I'm completely up and running.

CordwainerTX: you are my hero.

For the benefit of anyone searching, in my case it said the instruction at 0x00e0511a referenced memory at 0x0e7a7cd8 which could not be "read". Updating to the 1.01 patch did not help. Nor did updating graphics and sound drivers.

I uninstalled the game, reinstalled it with disc 1 in D: and disc 2 in E:, and it came right up. I did not modify my Direct X.

Other stats: WinXP SP3, 2GB RAM, GeForce 8800 GTS (640MB), Intel E6850 @ 3.00GHz. And, of course, two DVD-ROM drives.
