I don't understand how people can't compare stuff just because they aren't the same genre.
I prefer KOTOR over Crysis, Burnout Paradise over WarCraft 3, Tekken over NWN, GTA over Prince of Persia, MGS over Mass Effect, The Witcher over Just Cause, Max Payne over NBA Live, DAO over Lego Star Wars, Monkey Island over God of War, Devil May Cry over Two Worlds etc etc.

I think it is the leap from "I prefer DAO" to "DAO IS SUPERIOR!!" (exclaimed as if it were fact) that is the problem.

If you're going by personal preference alone, there is nothing you can't compare.

I love the Witcher and think that bioware could possibly learn a few things from that game. I love the choice and consequence and grey morality. In the witcher, what you choose to do or say can have major and unpredictable consequences further in the game. In DAO the choices all seemed more superficial and usually resulted in different dialog. One thing that bothered me is the rediculous amount of running around you had to do in the Witcher. The game would require you to go to a place and then go to another place and then talk to this person and run back to the tavern etc. This type of quest chaining got old fast and resulted in a lot of tedius time running around. I didnt think the combat in the witcher was bad but it was not that spectacular either. Alchemy, bombs and enhancing your swords was the best part about the gameplay IMO.

I think both games are excellent and similar in a lot of ways actually. I am really not sure which one I prefer. I will say that DAO can be a lot less tedius and more fun to play for a long time. I hate when people bash the witcher after playing for a few hours and not understanding it at all. Also, in the Witcher you play as Geralt so you dont pick your own character. Geralt's reputation, past and identity play into the game so it makes sense that you are Geralt. For a small budget game from poland I think the game is an amazing achievement. Imagine what cd project could do with bioware/EA's budget!! The witcher 2 might give bioware some real competition!

So what if The Witcher is better than DAO, or not for that matter, I don't want to know about that game in the DAO forums. Next people will be saying Elder Srolls 5 is better than DAO here.;)

Why do you care? I wouldn't mind folks on The Witcher's forums telling players that they ought to try DA next.

I care because unless I'm mistaken this is the DAO forum and not the The Witcher forum. Also I think too much has been said about it already, and maybe time to lock this thread.

Look up Witcher on Wiki, you will also see the beginning credits as well, the Bioware Aurora engine, the same tool for Neverwinter Nights was used to create The Witcher which I thought was pretty neat.

I think both games were awesome. I find TW atmosphere much better than DA:O. The overall darkness and the way the game has true consequences for you decisions.

Alchemy in TW is far and away better thought out than DA (or even Oblivion for that matter). You truly use you potions. Not all of them, there are some random things that are situational. But a good bit can be used very often. I think I may have used 2 bombs in DA.

Character customization goes to DA. class, look, skills etc all have variety. TW, has little noticeable customization. I don't care about the preset identity, I think Geralt is pretty cool character. But in actual skills (things things that actually matter to gameplay) it really didn't matter if you max strength and melee or intel and signs. You still use the same combat system (though its a good system). But there is little distinction between berserker melee Geralt and mageling Geralt.

Story, TW, slightly. DA has an awesome story, though kinda simple. But aside from the Origins, it gets boring. I couldn't bring myself to repeat it. Doing the origins is cool, but beyond that there's nothing new. TW due to actual game changing decisions gets a SLIGHT nod in my opinion. Both are good, TW is better.

Combat is a toss up. If you are playing a magic character, DA is awesome. Melee/archer DA fails fierce. I do not care at all to sit there and watch my rogue repeatedly neck stab with the same animation. TW you actually have interactive combat and control all swings with combos, shifting style and mixing in signs.  And since the meat of the game is played in combat, this I feel is the most important aspect of the game.

Witcher is a game that had me thinking it was freaking awesome because it was so uncensored and, at times, relentlessly profane.

When I had to backtrack for the fifth time in one chapter, though, I gave up.  It's actually pretty dull.  Glad you're so easily impressed, though.  I wish I could be.

I heard there were some issues with nvidia and the witcher, so likely i'll never play the game

Wow, I had to chime in.

The Witcher is infinitely better than Dragon Age. Atmosphere was far darker even without the swearing and sex, and Dragon Age is supposed to be inspired by the majorly dark fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire, but it felt much more like Lord of the Rings (movie version) than anything by George Martin. Dragon Age shamelessly rips off a number of stories from that series yet still fails to attain the grimmness of that series. The Witcher is much closer in tone.

Geralt is a fantastic character, the voice actor great, and the game amazing. I found myself clicking through most of Dragon Age's dialogue (seriously Leliana drove me nuts with her endless story, or Irvin and his horribly slow way of talking drove me nuts). I would skim read and click past finding no reaosn to listen. But in the Witcher I actually found myself drawn into the voice acting, the dialogue and the story.

And not having a lot of weapons and armor added to the realism in my opinion. Kind of like the Gothic series. Now there's another game with amazing atmosphere and a grim outlook. You had to really earn your money and your weapons and your armor in the Witcher. I felt like a poverty stricken hero scraping by.

Dragon Age just didn't have it. It was a good game that was extremely frustrating in the insanely long dungeon crawls. And what's the point of leveling up when everything levels with you? Same problem as Oblivion.

The world of Dragon Age was boring, unispired. I mean the Couslands were clearly based on the Starks, but their story is nowhere near as compelling or tragic. The Alienage seemed like a 1950s look at poverty, it reminded me of little orphan Annie or something.

The Witcher is the superior game despite its flaws. The sequel should be even better. I remember trying to go through making the "paragon" choices in the Witcher and soon learning they don't exist. It seems like the right thing to do to support the oppressed elves until your help starts getting innocent people killed. They are like terrorists in that element.

Too bad the Witcher gets a bad rep. Dragon Age is good, I played it through, but I can't bring myself to do a second playthrough because of the Fade and the Deep Roads. Those two crawls were so long they pretty much ruined the game, which had some cool stuff in it.

You know because heaven forbid people have different tastes.  Of course we can't all be condescending ***holes like you now though can we?  Enjoy your auto attack animation.  Guess it doesn't take much to keep you going either huh?

I can't speak for the first one, but as i've seen clips for the 2nd Witcher, i will say it completely blows dragon age out of the water graphicly, artisticly, charecter models, cut scenes & style right out of the water, into the sky, out threw space and into the sun

The game makes dragon age look like ps1 quality and i really wish that was an exageration, dragon age stinks of last gen graphics as is and witcher 2 just rubs bioware's face in it

Huh?

Water reflections, models, cut scenes, sun, shiny stuff....

So, graphics, eye candies > gameplay then? Oh well, whatever floats your boat. I bet you are playing on console.

EDIT: Yes you are.

Different people, different tastes.

It's just this: I can't understand how are people able to play a game solely for the graphics even if the game itself was ****(not pointing on the Witcher or anything). Mount and Blade could be(in my opinion) a good example of a complete opposite. Sub-par graphics but the whole combat system and gameplay overall is badass. If manage to you get into it of course.

If I would want just to admire graphics or pretties, I would rather watch the animated Final Fantasy movie, so please help me understand your point of view.

I really enjoyed The Witcher, the game had attitude, the character took no crap and it was true in many ways to the stories. Someone else mentioned the Swamp and, honestly, I hated the swamp - it was too repetitive. But the story was decent, the character interactions fun though nowhere near as in depth as Dragon Age - though the characters in The Witcher did feel like they had lives of their own, which I feel DA didn't do so well with. (but, then, you had no other party members in Witcher so the npcs could behave differently)

I really enjoyed the combat system, which took only a little effort to grow accustomed to, the level system was interesting, and the potion brewing system not badly done ... though I did get sick of running around picking ingredients upon occasion.

I would say each game had its strengths and its weaknesses and which I prefer really depends on what I want from my gaming experience that day.

I guess I just should have quoted Monkeykaboom, as he laid everything out pretty well - I will follow my last post by saying I agree with pretty much everything he said.

This game absolutely shreds Dragon age in every way accept for group character interaction and story choices.

Up to Act 2 and this game is truely amazing!

Whoever said they dont like this game is spastic! Maybe you played if before the enhanced edition? if so.....get the enhanced edition!

Like i said before DA had 0 atmosphere which is mandatory for all rpgs. The entire time in DA i felt like i was just along for the ride. I had no real sense of freedom and the world was void of any realism. The Witcher has everything that DA should of!

cdprojekt are now my favorite rpg developers alongside bioware

Character creation or customization does not make a game a RPG. You're playing a role that fits a storyline, in DA it just so happens that more than one character can fit that role. In TW that wasn't the case, as its story is centered around Geralt.
