Character creation or customization does not make a game a RPG.

Tell that to a P & P player, and you will get a laugh right in the face. Just saying. Posted Image

Geralt is a fantastic character, the voice actor great, and the game amazing. I found myself clicking through most of Dragon Age's dialogue (seriously Leliana drove me nuts with her endless story, or Irvin and his horribly slow way of talking drove me nuts). I would skim read and click past finding no reaosn to listen. But in the Witcher I actually found myself drawn into the voice acting, the dialogue and the story.

Wait...you skipped most of the dialogue then didn't like the characters? Shouldn't you try to listen to the dialogue or read it before you judge something? I'm not commenting on the Witcher one way or another, I never played it so I'm neutral. But it seems like you would want to actually listen to the dialogue all the way through in Dragon Age before writing it all off. Posted Image

Wow, irony. Been replaying the Witcher this week, personally I enjoy it over DA. In my opinion, TW has superior story and atmosphere by comparison. The first time I played it I wasn't all to into it, but I picked it up again a while later when I had time and tried again. Much to my satisfaction I enjoyed it. Probably one of my favorite RPGs in recent years. Now to hope TW2 will be as good or greater than...

Just saying your own opinion, that is. I've been GMing pen and paper games for almost 20 years now and I didn't disagree with her statement in the least. While creating a unique character can certainly be a major part of the experience, I have also ran many games where the players picked up characters I had made for them and had a fantastic role playing experience with what I had given them. For a good couple years I had one player who insisted I make all his characters for him - and this guy was a very talented role player, but often rpers fall into ruts, play the same kind of character types, get stuck in similar personalities and though they become excellent at playing one archetype, their rp skills suffer as they limit themselves.

In The Witcher you have multiple ways you can choose to play out Geralt's story, but you always have to put yourself in his shoes, consider the world through his eyes - it can, in fact, take a greater skill at roleplaying to do this than build your own model from the tools you are given.

Though some PnP gamers tend to forget it, there is no *one right way* to roleplay.

Haha, well every single one that I have been in contact with, through forums and real life, says that a real RPG have charcter creation and development and that play with premade charcters is just lazy.

But hey, you maybe have come across some of the very few people that dont think so ^.^

Many people who feel differently - my gaming group isn't just me and a guy sitting at a table, I have seen scores of players at my table and others over the last 20 years. Playing with premade characters is not lazy, it is just another approach to the game ... you are still responsible for roleplaying that character, no matter who drew him up.

Its not the fact that you cant customise Geralt that I wont play it. I just hate Geralt with his stupid name and stupider hair.
