Even though I can appreciate the good intentions behind starting this thread, I personally hope people keep up the heated discussion and debate. A big part of my job is to listen. I don't always have anything helpful to add to a discussion, but I do my best to read as many as I can, so that feedback is represented back to the team. If people aren't talking, I have nothing to do. Negative opinions have as much value as positive, since they help us learn and do better.

So, as much as positive threads are appreciated (and people should make them if they want), I could sit and post those all day myself. It's important to see the negative as well, even if it does get ugly from time to time.

Well said, Victor, and I see where you're coming from. But in the grand scheme of things I guess I just don't (personally) think that it's important enough to give yourself a heart attack over. Much like having to to fill in a CRB check form or filling out your tax return, it's just not worth getting angry about. Discuss and debate and you should be free to leave negative aswell as positive feedback (how will you possibly make DA:2 better if you don't have both?!) I'm talking about a minority who just seem to go that little bit too far, that's all. But, like I say and want to stress, that's my personal opinion.

This thread was really more about me expressing my thoughts about the DLC than anything else. I couldn't face tralling through all the forums to find the right one to post my thoughts in, so I just thought I'd start my own. Perhaps I didn't make that clear enough in my original post so apologies to those who've read and commented. Perhaps I should have blogged instead but I was interested to see if anyone felt the same way.

Some folks are having such heated discussions about various subjects. If there is anything to be (mildly) annoyed about it is how both Awakenings and the Darkspawn Chronicles have been a massive let down. Churned out in split-second time with no real thought to make a quick buck. MY buck. £20 for not much at all.

I feel very sad for you.  You actually believe that people who intelligently discuss works of fiction believe that the fiction is real.

By your logic, people who passionately discuss the psychology of Hamlet (a true whiney, indecisive prince) or the madness of King Lear should "get a life".  Gosh! I had to pay to discuss this when I attended university.  On the forums, I get to indulge my intellect for free!

Personally, I believe Bioware desreves a round fo applause for providing this rich content to us nerdrage gamers.  Yes. Origins and Awakenings are not perfect.  However, the content they provided in these games so inspires that fans roar in disapproval when they believe Bioware could have done a better job.  What higher praise could there be?

Finally, sorry you didn't like Awakenings.  I am having a great time with it!

I think you should re-read what I said. Nowhere in my original post did I say that "people who intelligently discuss works of fiction believe the fiction is real" and I don't quite know where you've got the "get a life" bit from, because I don't believe I said that or implied it. Why would I think they should "get a life" exactly? I'm addicted to a computer game and am starting my own threads, so how can I feel that I'm better than anybody else? That is to say I can't have much of a life either.

Yes, Bioware have done us proud with Dragon Age, but this doesn't mean that we can't feel let down with the DLC. I guess when you start with a great thing you're a bit spoilt.

I'm glad you're enjoying the game and the forums.

In one way I have more feelings for the Awakening companions than I do for the Origins companions and the ending bothers me more. Let me explain my reasoning for saying this. In Orgins they are companions BUT they are not fellow Grey Wardens. So I can expect them to go their own way and I will go mine. Except for the romance entanglements I would have been done with this part of the story. In Awakenings I would always want to keep up with my fellow companions/Grey Wardens for the rest of our lives after all I choose them and helped them to become great Grey Wardens. I wish that more time could have been spent with them but I was quite happy to go back to my love interest from Origins. Do I hope that they will continue to make great role playing games with deep emotional attachments to the characters that are created? YOU BET I DO!!! I love a great story but I like great endings with things tied up unless you want to make more games ha!!!

There were a number of things I didn't like about Awakenings. Some of them are more personal detail issues and others are more general. Like the time line. I really felt like there should have been at least one thing more between getting all the companions and the final decision/fight portion. I know, I know, it was an expansion and therefore shorter than the base game by design, but it really doesn't allow for a cohesion of "the group" when it plays out the way it did - especially since the order is almost prescribed to get either the dwarf or the elf, then the dwarf or the elf, then Justice - because if you get either the dwarf or the elf last - you don't get to make them Wardens the way the last decision/fight butts right up against that third portion. It doesn't have to be a huge sprawling gap between the one and the other - but at least one more "installment" of something to do - maybe an investigative foray into the woods or the deep roads or even over the countryside that you send soldiers to protect but don't see much of to gather information about these bizarre talking darkspawn that we don't devote any time actually looking for or trying to hunt down before they launch an attack on us.

Another issue that is more hotly debated around here was the ability to initiate conversation with your companions vs. the Awakenings spontaneous system. I'd prefer a hybrid myself of the two rather than one or the other - because both have their pros and cons and I think together they could balance out to a really excellent and fluid system that would satisfy a pretty big majority of players in future games.

I hated Ser Pounce Alot. A lot. A lot. A lot. Only because there was too much of him. Once you give him to Anders it's practically he talks about. It was overdone, and I suspect it was some inkling to play to the female players, but I am one and it just didn't work for me. That's a personal thing, but I almost don't want to give him the cat at all knowing what will come of it.

I missed my Mabari. I can't think of a solid reason why I wouldn't have brought my wardog with me - and no explanation was ever given. Of all the other companions not carrying over, or having cameos only - I did not mind. Obviously we were not going to be together forever and none of them were Wardens except Alistair who would have either already left us or had to deal with being King - or at least could have been said to have been working on some other Warden project elsewhere, like re-vamping and re-populating Soldier's Keep perhaps. But my dog? Yes. I would have brought him - and he isn't there. And there's no reason, which seems like simple oversight.

Those are just a few things that weren't favorable to me with the expansion if that's what you intended this topic to be about.

I absolutely hated Awakenings when I imported my Origins character. But I tried it again with a fresh Orlesian and I did actually enjoy it. I was lucky enough to dodge all of the nastier bugs (didn't lose my gear, Valenna spawned just fine, etc.) so I had a pretty good experience with it.

I do think it was silly to design it without much consideration for Origins characters though. Most of us wanted an expansion to do just that, expand the tale of our Warden and their party.

What we have with Awakenings is more like a stand alone module, and if it had been marketed as such, I don't think people would have been so disappointed with it.

I've said enough in other threads on Awakenings - although Awakenings is so easy you don't even have to buy it a drink... =/ .

I've seen WAAAAY too much awesome stuff in these forums to get upset about people taking the game 'too seriously'. I'm not even sure what that really means - by its very nature, a game has no impact whatsoever on the world OTHER than how it affects you personally. If you didn't take an unrealistic amount of enjoyment from it, or get upset and annoyed because you felt you'd wasted your time and money, or find joy in connecting with other people who share a similar passion, perhaps this isn't the hobby for you.

If that's way too analytical an answer then yeah, okay - DON'T HATE.

I do not know your skills outside of your job on the forums, but I wish to congratulate YOU for your valor. I also am unaware as to whether your public announcement of the new patch coming out was due to the company's urge or on your own accord (probably dumb question but still...) but the fact that you relieved the hearts of several including my own has you earning much of my respect already. For this reason, I thank you and you alone (any others who at least take us consumers seriously) for your patronage to the consumer mind.

One might assume this to be a sarcastic message, but I indeed state the contrary to popular belief. When I shall start my history working in the game design field, you can bet your organs, as I shall mine, that the people should be satisfied. As a quote from MI3 states, I shall bleed on the stripes of the American flag to keep them red, I shall "bleed" on the fabrics of the gaming industry to keep my customers happy,

I'm not particuarly 'upset' about people getting angry. Like I say, that was more of introduction to what I really wanted to write about (which was Awakenings). Carry on as you see fit. Nobody here is saying you shouldn't. My comment about the minority who just seem to go that little bit OTT seems to have ruffled everybody's feathers unintentionally.

I loved the politics of Awakenings. It was interesting to have to decide matters of "high justice." I just wish we knew more of the outcome of our decisions. That could really have gone somewhere interesting. I also loved having companions in the Fade....big improvement over DA:O.

I hate to say it, but I often let the City burn just so I can go back and fight at the Keep because the battle there is so much more awesome! Why couldn't we have defended both??? Awakenings ending is not only too abrupt but also broken. I never get the final save, so for my characters the big boss battle is eternal....can we fix that please?

I much prefer the camraderie of the Camp, and I missed that interaction with my companions in awakening. I also hated the dark a gloomy outcomes you get for many of those characters. I adored Sigrun and hated the way her story ended....I wish Nate's story had been left open-ended because I would have loved to have seen more of him. If I had to choose the conversation system I liked best, it would have been DA:O, even with Alistair giving me a rose in the middle of a battle...it was better. Hated the Runescrafting, find the funny ingredients to make the great armor thing......boring and I didn't need it, so I didn't do it. Let me just be able to buy stuff in the next game....I don't want to work that hard for "stuff."

Awakenings had great potential to be rich, rich rich, but it was too short. And why did they have to kill the Seneschal? I liked him.

Return to Ostagar was my favorite DLC. Not because of the companion interaction....that seemed a little stiff, but simply because it allowed us to bring Ostagar to a final close. I ljust wish we could have found Duncan's body. Now I suspect that the darkspawn ate him....not a good ending. I was glad we got to give Cailan a fnal send-off.

I wish I could get back into the Warden's Keep instead of having to stay outside in the snow.....how dumb is that? I mean, we own that keep (the Wardens) don't we?

Didn't buy the Darkspawn Chronicles. Don't intend to. Not my idea of a fun concept.

Anyway, my DA fever has subsided somewhat. Although I look forward to catching it again with the next full release. I just hope it's as good as DA:O.

Zombie Duncan will be back for DA:2. =)

Peter Renaday does a much better bad guy voice anyways. (Contrast Al Mualim from Assassin's Creed vs. Duncan, or even angry Duncan in the fade.)
