So it says you get a reward if you mannage to save the twon without a single defender dieing. My question is how in the hell do you do that? I am playing on EASY and it is imposible. I get through the top part with the knights just fine. Then when you have to run down and help the milita by the Chantry it all falls apart. In seconds after I get there like two or three milita men die. It's almost instatly way beofre I get a chance to pull aggro of them or cast any healing spells with my mages...
Redcliffe how? (spoilers)

Wait, you get a reward if you keep them alive?
I dunno, its probably a luck thing, or having Wynne and your main being a Mage, and both of you spamming Forcefield on the militia men.

I didn't try it. You could maybe bring 2 character down there BEFORE you get to kill all the monsters when you're with the templars.

Maybe traps could help too. Yet this battle is really hard, I don't know how it could be done. Maybe with 3 mages and a lot of mana potions.

Well I am not certain there is some sort of secret or not. I had the same difficulty you are stating with my first run through as a mage. The second I made it with no one dying. Well except one of Dwynn's thugs but that didn't stop me from getting the reward so it appears to only be the townspeople surviving that matters. The only difference from my first time to the second? Well other than my main character being a damage dealing warrior and not a mage...
I had Wynne so I had a healer. I went to the Mage Tower before Redcliffe knowing she would be there from my first run through and realizing how important a mage is. When we went down the lake to help the militia I placed one warrior (Alistair) at one point the mobs were entering the barricades and I stood at the other with Morrigan and Wynne hanging in the back. I made sure to try to keep mobs off the militia or downing them quickly if they were.
Don't know if that helps but its what I did to get it done *shrugs* Much easier than before...by a long shot.

I think all the militia died with me, but I finished it on my first try without trying to save anyone, really.

I did it easily on easy. As there is no friendly fire, I had my main (a mage) spamming fireball for high damage and knockdown (no friendly fire on easy, so just nuke yer group) and Morrigan keeping tempest up on the area at all times as well as casting cone AoEs liberally when available. High AoE damage without risk of hurting party members/guards = redcliff is mad ez.
On normal+ difficulties it is a lot harder as if you try the above tactic, you will kill all the guards long before the undead stop coming, its still doable it just requires more blocking with your tank to get the undead hordes in the right spot for a good fireball...
short form: Fireball beats all.

I'm playing on nightmare difficulty and I only lost one militiaman during that portion, I'd been debating replaying it to save them all, maybe I should, it is certainly doable.
My party consisted of Alistair, Morrigan, war dog, and of course myself, as a weapon and shield warrior. For me it was all about crowd control and knowing where to step to draw out the beasties. Running out past the barricades is going to saddle you with too many critters to handle, keep an eye on your party and make sure they only move away from that central area when you are ready.
When you are fighting, pay attention to which militia need help, War Dog's dread howl and Morrigan's many stunning abilities like mindblast, winter grasp, and horror; Al and I with shield bash, pummel, and overthrow, these are all things to keep the corpes from dealing too much damage. Also, when you thin the evil so the militia aren't fighting hand to hand, they are devasting archers, since they all tend to fire at the same creature. Murdock and Tomas seemed to have slighty higher health regeneration than the other militia as well, so keep an eye on them just like the others, but they can handle a bit more.
I did all portions of the quest preparing the militia for the night, including getting them free drinks from the tavern, I'm not sure how much of an effect this had, but it bares mentioning. I was level eight or nine at the time, as were my companions, with war dog slightly lower in level.
