REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Jun 7, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- BioWare™, an Electronic Arts Inc. studio, and FUNimation Entertainment, the leading distributor of Japanese animation in North America, announced today an agreement to create an anime feature film adapted from BioWare's critically-acclaimed fantasy Action RPG franchise Dragon Age™. Production of the Dragon Age anime movie is slated to begin in May 2010, with a home video release in 2011. Executive producing the film are BioWare's Executive Producer Mark Darrah and Creative Director Mike Laidlaw, as well as FUNimation's Fukunaga and Director of Original Entertainment Chris Moujaes.

"Anime is a great medium for us to continue the robust Dragon Age story," said Mark Darrah, Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise. "Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we are delivering the exceptional quality and entertainment value that our Dragon Age fans expect."

"We are thrilled to be working with EA and BioWare on the production of the Dragon Age anime feature," said Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO of FUNimation. "We are going to be bringing the classic visual and storytelling techniques found in anime to create a film that will extend the narrative of the world BioWare has created."

Dragon Age has been selected as the first title in FUNimation's slate of major anime movies to be developed through FUNimation's Original Entertainment team since the announcement of the company's co-production initiative in November 2009.

When originally released in 2009, Dragon Age: Origins won over 30 critics awards and was named "RPG of the Year" by the Academy of Arts and Interactive Sciences, Game Informer, G4, SpikeTV, and PC Gamer. Seth Schiesel of The New York Times described the game as " . . . perhaps the best electronic game made yet."

- T.O. Entertainment and Oxybot Studio will be handling the production of the movie. Fumihoki Sori will be directing.

- In the recent BioWare Dragon Age 2 chat the subject of the anime movie came up:

[Comment From SDNcNSDNcN: ] Will the Dragon Age anime have some tie ins to DA:2?

Fernando@BIoWare: @SDNcN: More of a Mike question, but at high level anything with DA ties fits in somehow into the greater world fiction and timeline - characters, places and events are 'real'

Mike Laidlaw: Fernando's right about the Anime. It will have some tie-in to DA2, yes, but I'm not at liberty to say just how (yet!). I'm really excited to see it coming together, though. Got some first pass visuals the other day, and they look fantastic.

Interesting idea... Movies and video games are two different animals.... It can be hard to get the "feel" right...

I didn't mean it like that. I meant, why not get someone else to make it?

Well, first of all, FUNimation is an American company that uses local talent. Secondly, for all we know Navarre (the parent company of FUNimation) were the ones who approached BioWare and EA about this.

It will probably be like the Dead Space anime and such, trying to tie things into the games. Meh, not much of an anime fan. Would have much preferred BioWare go for a machinima type movie like Warden's Fall or a CG, Sacred Ashes type movie if they were going to branch DA out.

Oh God. Anime?! Is this going to turn out to be garbage and completely mess up facts that have been established like what happened with Halo: Legends?

We've covered the story also and have put up some nice anime shots of _possible_ DA characters. If the characters in the movie will look at least a bit like the sketches in our article than I will probably watch it :)

Halo Legends sucked because anime about space marines is a bad idea. This is about swords and magic, which is where anime does well.

You guys should all watch Sword of the Stranger if you want to see a really well done anime movie.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm no great fan of anime but I do enjoy the odd series. Manga is more my speed. Dragon Age is already covered in the comics front though. My past experiences with video game to anime features has been less than agreeable; which is why I'm wary of this announcement. I might be pleasantly surprised by Funimation's OVA, but I won't pick this up without reading reviews first.

Not all video game --> anime ventures end in miserable failure (just most of them). Gungrave and Utawarerumono both started as video games and their anime adaptions ended up being much superior to the games. The Gungrave anime in particular is still a masterpiece.

Isn't "just most of them" enough to make a person cautious? I don't claim to have seen every game to anime conversion ever made, but the OVAs I have seen were mediocre at best. That doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me. It's not unlike video game conversions of movies. Sure, once in awhile a great movie based game is released, but the opposite is often true.

I'm excited. Anime is a great medium for storytelling, and everything Dragon Age related is already enough to spark my interest. I hope they have talented people working at both ends and the quality of the product ends up being high. Can't wait! :)

Like who?  Disney?  Or as we like to call them, the lords of copyright destruction?

Was there another "Western style" animation company?  What exactly does that mean anyway?

You seem to know your anime, and have countered nearly ever post that dislikes anime, so l hope your right.

But its not for everyone, no matter how much you might pr it.
