I suppose all this dissension is moot considering that these types of projects generally don't receive favorable responses. However, If I did see something that would set this apart from all the other video game to movie conversions, I would also be annoyed with the decision to convert to anime. The older I get, the more anime seems simple, childish and lazy when it comes to the story and dialog. I happen to like the artistic style of anime to a certain degree, but its hard getting past the terrible writing. Oh well, I'm sure life will go on.

The only reason you believe anime has terrible writing is because you've only watched poorly done dubs of children's anime aired on adult swim.  If you want to talk about bad plots, how about Avatar (movie) which was basically one big cliched stereotype, yet was the most expensive film ever made?  Face it, if you want to talk about poor writing, I gaurantee you I can find, at the very least, just as many, if not more examples in western media and box office hits than you can in anime.  Especially in the darker-themed sub-genre, which is basically right up the alley for DA:O.

It's pretty tiring hearing people in this thread yammer on about how anime sucks because X,Y or Z when it's obvious that X,Y and Z are completely untenable generalizations based on very limited exposure or even thinly veiled prejudice.

Please, stop.  Seriously.

I'm slightly confused about this whole
debate here. Funimation if I'm not mistaken is purely a western company
who converts anime for the western audiences. The main market that
would be targeted is the North American/Western European market, given
the fact most of the games fan base are located in these regions. What
reason is there to assume they'd pursue the more dark and gritty
artistic design and story styles that thrive in Japan/Korea but
ultimately flop here in the west?

That's my problem with the
whole thing. Not the fact it's got the anime tag on it (Which in reality
could have been a benefit) but the fact that a lot of the corny and
childish shows are what thrive in the target market and not some of the
brilliant pieces we've seen from the likes of Miyazaki. It's all about
the cash and BioWare isn't exactly known for taking a whole lot of
risks. I don't see much hope for this project and it's not because it's
got the anime label next to it.

Agreed, to some extent.  I'm not a fan of Funimation either.  But this project is novel in so many ways and so there will probably be changes to the modus operandi; that is my hope.  I think losing hope is premature.  ;)

Personally I'm excited for Bioware - this is the second game of theirs we're seeing turned into a film now, it should be an exciting, nerve racking, high for everyone involved and I hope it turns out to be everything they (yes, they, not the fans who will never be pleased) want it to be. If nothing else it will be a learning and growing experience, which in itself has value.

I have faith Bioware won't let them turn Dragon Age into a joke and seeing as I've not laid eyes on any artwork yet, I can't denounce the anime style being used as inappropriate ... really, there are some very good anime artists out there who, I feel, could do the setting justice.

I am hoping we'll at least see some of the characters we love in passing - probably best if that is the only way we see them - but whichever way it goes I will be eager to watch the result.

So, I guess what I'm saying is; "Congratulations Bioware, I hope it is everything you want it to be." Me, I will reserve my final decision until I see it, which I most certainly will.

The only thing that does get me down is it seems likely this is the 2/11 thing we've been speculating on and - while awesome - isn't as awesome as another game would have been. (for all the reasons games are typically superior to watching films)

Someone translate please...  Seriously.

I read this twice and I can't even find a semblance of a point.  It basically looks like some 8 year old new*** on /b/ raging on current trends and invoking fake nostalgia in a completely vain attempt to gain street cred.

I mean, he mispelled "being" twice and breaks five rules of grammar every other sentence.  And he expects to be taken seriously?  I usually don't care at all about grammar, but c'mon...  There has to be more to the post than this.  Can someone please tell me that it's satire?

then perhaps reading comprehension isn't your thing..... try scrubbing toilets instead.

seriously- i don't see what is so offensive about wanting a western story to be told in the context it is supposed to be told.

otaku are just pissed off that they won't have huge eyed annoying characters with stereotypical dialogue.

if the matter is handled like it is supposed to be, and not "japanicised" then i have no problem with a japanese company doing the animation.

(look at galaxy rangers, its possible for a japanese company to produce a western story with western feel and culture)

but i dont' want the overall popularity of today's trash anime to turn an otherwise serious story into some naruto or inuyasha garbage.

as for my comments about the dungeons and dragons cartoon, it still stands- its better than 90% of all episode based anime. which is why i specifically excluded those presented as short running series or movies.

dragon age is NOT lodoss, and it should not be treated like it is any more than a japanese story should be 'westernized" a western story should not be "japanicized".

if anyone has a problem with maintaining the cultural flavor and feel of the original story and artwork then they need to take a long hard look at themselves. i call altering the cultural make up of a story just to pander to the masses racial/cultural bias in and of itself. whether its western to japanese, japanese to western or chinese to aftrican or whatnot.

if thats still over certain peoples heads then maybe they should consider a lucrative future career in the food service industry or trash disposal industry.

That was a really good series. I would not be disappointed in the slightest if the OAV turned out like this. In fact, I would be thrilled if it turned out like this.

I am cautiously optimistic about this. Do you guys think it will follow the plot of the game or expand upon a side story/side characters?

Good God that would be awesome great art, action, style, acting, subtlety all the stuff the anime haters are claiming anime doesn't have.   But I would be happy if it was done like Baccano (art wise) Samurai x trust and betrayal or Sword of the stranger.

And to the guy who made the comment like "you wouldn't want (white guy) to play Itto Ogami " look up Road to Perdition.

Because FUNimation is an Anime oritented company?

Hmmm wonder why they chose anime,  is that what is planned for the ME movie as well?     Never been interested in anime..in any of its forms.

Oh well, interesting experiment I guess.     Not something that would tempt me to rush out and buy,  not an anime fan.

But good luck with this Bioware,  I realize this is a franchise, and with a franchise ..you attempt to expand in any direction that's possible or is possible within the imaginations of the creators. :)

If I see any character with ridiculous hair, oversized weapons and "transformation" scenes in this movie-to-be, I am going to be really upset.

Morrigan: Yameru Leliana-chan! Stop looking at my breasts!

Leliana: Morrigan-sama, blue satin shoes would look really kawaii on you!

I had to giggle at this..and to be honest ..it really doesn't fit the Dragon Age I know, love and have played multiple times (22 chars so far)

Anyway.....:P

One wonders what the characters will look like...little school girls in knee-high socks and mini mini skirts, doing a lot of giggling and deferring to the males in the party...thats the image I'm getting. Hope I'm wrong.

If the only imput Mr Gaider has, is being the occasional "reference point for lore"...then I imagine this anime company can get the bit in their teeth and run with it.

Right..well doesn't sound like anything I will spend my money on, and hopefully it does not impact the story we play ingame. If it does, that will be a disappointing outcome.

OH and by the way, let's talk about MUSIC, shall we.

Yeah, that's right, when's the last time you heard anything memorable from an American cartoon? besides, let's see, The Flintstones, Thundercats, and Swat Kats openings. Yes, all 3. from like 20 years ago.

OK maybe 2 or 3 more if you count Disney's theatrical animations, like Mulan and stuff. Still too old though, and still nothing exactly too special.

Now, whereas in anime there's veritably an entire INDUSTRY built on anime soundtracks, with many high-profile artists singing for the openings and endings to all sorts of series, some even with Western bands doing the songs, like Oasis for Eden of the East!

So yeah, even if the story of the Dragon Age animation turns out to be a snorefest like the game's or even if it'll be as condescendingly dreary as other American toons, at least we'll have something good to listen to and keep us awake if it's an anime.

Just because they use less pop music doesn't make the music from western cartoons any worse.  The theme with the opening credits were pretty much the best part of this movie www.youtube.com/watch.  That brings up a good question though, are they going to use the same composer they did for the game?

Any guesses for the who/where/when for the movie? On one hand it would be cool to see other countries and characters, on the other hand I want to see more of the characters we know in the future or the past.

I realize that you are all "gung-ho" about anime,   but some of us aren't..and thats perfectly alright too.  :P

hahah when most anime soundtracks aren't even pop music. All I heard in that video was some generic wannabe-epic orchestra crap that you hear in 90% of all Hollywood trash and soon forget. Besides, BTW, did you even LOOK at those character designs and the embarrassingly-stiff animation in the video you linked?? Yeah.. that sequence definitely looked like the "best" that movie could've gotten. Thanks for championing the cause of Western animation :D

THIS alone stomps all over the best opening any American toon may have ever had.

and this shows how different they can be. Watch and learn. but it's OK, your pre-determined spite will still be able to nitpick something wrong.

pfff come back once your favored medium has thousands of outlets dedicated to its art, characters, storylines, music, and spin-offs, or if you can at least point out some comparable examples from your side that've got more than just nostalgia going for em. Till then, all your criticism is just thinly-veiled "ME-TOO!"'ing in the form of "Not me!" :P

My favoured medium is NOT cartoons. :)    I don't like Homer Simpson, I don't watch South Park...etc etc.

And I don't favour anime.

I kind of like Dragon Age the way it is portrayed now.

"I'm turning Japanese, oh yes I'm turning Japanese,  oh yes I think so ....(song)"

Hehehe   but to each their own.    IF this is the prediction for the future of Dragon Age,  then I will be done,  when it becomes fact..thats all.

So Bioware loses ONE fan.....ah well. :)   Thats the way the cookie bounces.

BTW...my opinion is ACTUALLY MY OWN...whether it resembles "me too" or not.   Thats just your way of saying to me..."talk to the hand"   Or   La la la...I can't HEARRRRR you.    Nevertheless,   my opinion remains my opinion.  :D

bleh I was referring to the general opinion of favoring a Western studio, but anyway, so your franchise gets ONE spin-off on a medium that you happen have an unjustified dislike for, and you drop the entire franchise?

yeah. I hope you're just taking the troll-by-bewildering route and not actually serious with that. If you are, then BioWare won't be losing much.

and LOL @ the implication that only the natives of a country should like that country's products.. <_<

Grim.
