Man... Anime? Why not in a western style?

Like who?  Disney?  Or as we like to call them, the lords of copyright destruction?

Was there another "Western style" animation company?  What exactly does that mean anyway?

Pixar?

Or anyone who did the Batman, Xmen, Spiderman, etc etc cartoons of the 90's.

Not all video game --> anime ventures end in miserable failure (just most of them). Gungrave and Utawarerumono both started as video games and their anime adaptions ended up being much superior to the games. The Gungrave anime in particular is still a masterpiece.

Isn't "just most of them" enough to make a person cautious? I don't claim to have seen every game to anime conversion ever made, but the OVAs I have seen were mediocre at best. That doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me. It's not unlike video game conversions of movies. Sure, once in awhile a great movie based game is released, but the opposite is often true.

Absolutely, there's enough crap out there to warrant your caution. FUNimation is a really good publisher though, and they licence a lot of good titles every year. I'm willing to take a leap of faith for them and remain optimistic. Hopefully, BioWare guys like Mr. Gaider will be guiding the plot along to make sure it's a worthy addition to the Dragon Age franchise.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm no great fan of anime but I do enjoy the odd series. Manga is more my speed, but Dragon Age is already covered in the comics front. Past experience with video game to anime features has been less than agreeable. My instincts tell me to feel wary of this announcement. I might be pleasantly surprised by Funimation's OVA, but I won't pick this up without reading reviews first.

You seem to know your anime, and have countered nearly ever post that dislikes anime, so l hope your right.

But its not for everyone, no matter how much you might pr it.

I agree 100%. This movie will not be for everyone. That is true of everything though. Nothing is truly universally popular, right? I'm just hoping some of you guys will keep an open mind and don't dismiss it simply because it's anime.

This will either be pretty darn cool or a disaster most likely.

I'm hoping cool since it seems like something that could be done in an anime style and not fail.

hmmm, i don't see this exactly as bad news. I'll take a "wait and see" approach

And who knows? Maybe a Dragon Age anime will help break the Final Fantasy monopoly in Japan :)

Ugh, I hate Anime so bad news for me. Would definately have preferred something more Western, if anything. :pinched:
But hey, guess I'll just stay away from it..

Anime is a great art form and many shows / movies came from that style, but shows / movies/ video games do mix well as a general rule of thumb. I like anime and I like rgp video games, but the combos -- wait and see....

Hey anime is great, Dragon Age is great.. but combine them and I think we're going to get something pretty crappy. Bioware/EA should just give there money to the folks at Machinima. After watching Warden's Fall they got my vote.

I think it's being funded through FUNimation's Original Entertainment branch.

I already don't want to read the books, and now yet another non-game Dragon Age product is being made. I just hope they don't expect us to pick it up to make sense of the next game, as long as that is the case, then they can create whatever they want.

This should be interesting. Hopefully they don't change things up too much or make the male characters look overly feminine like in most anime, though I don't know how much they can help with males in mage robes.

If I see any character with ridiculous hair, oversized weapons and "transformation" scenes in this movie-to-be, I am going to be really upset.

Morrigan: Yameru Leliana-chan! Stop looking at my breasts!

Leliana: Morrigan-sama, blue satin shoes would look really kawaii on you!

Oh God. Anime?! Is this going to turn out to be garbage and completely mess up facts that have been established like what happened with Halo: Legends?

Halo Legends sucked because anime about space marines is a bad idea. This is about swords and magic, which is where anime does well.

You guys should all watch Sword of the Stranger if you want to see a really well done anime movie.

I'm an anime fan, but HALO Legends was very poorly conceived and Iwish I could take back the $15 it cost me.  I love all things HALO, but they could have done much better than comic book stills.  It is not the way to feed a fan base.  I hope DA and their partners have a real vision and not just put crap out on the shelves seeking a quick cash-in using brand name recog.

There are many franchise spin-off disappointments out there, let's hope DA will not become part of that growing trash heap.  If some of the DLC is any indication, well...let's just hope.

Anime is not a genre, it is a medium. It can be as great or as terrible as any other.

Sorede nihon no kaisha niwa kaisakusarenai node, chara wa osoraku nihongo wo hanasanai hazu da :).

If Bioware's writers write it, then it could be good. If it is left to Funimation it will be horrible. There's no reason to say it is going to suck just because it is anime though.

Ah..there's nothing to capture the gritty, dark low fantasy atmosphere of the world of Thedas like....anime?!?

Oh crap, if neon and pastel colors, girls in cat suits and giant robots start showing up, I'll hardly be suprised. Not to mention the ensuing humor of the Japanese trouble with pronouncing the western letter "L." With so many major characters having a name with that letter in it, we'll likely see such situations as:

Loghain -> Roguhin : Which would actually be kind of funny since it sounds like Rogaine, the hair growth medicine.

Leliana -> Reriana

Lilly -> Reri

Cousland -> Kusurande

ect...

Hopefully we won't get the Japanese version, but it might be hilarious. At least it will be more entertaining than a live action movie, like what they are doing with Mass Effect. I might actually watch the anime strictly for the "WTF Factor."

hah no thanks, I'd rather not have mind-numbingly stiff action sequences, lame one-liners after every time a Warden gently slaps a Darkspawn off the screen, and sexless characters exaggerated in all the wrong places, like lips that move as if with a million muscles. :whistle:

The generic "Western style" works for comedies like Family Guy or Futurama, but not epic tales of kickass. No.

Besides, those CG trailers that you see of Dragon Age (with the Leliana acrobatics and everything) draw more inspiration from anime than any Western style, you know. So please, the hypocrisy. :lol:

pff try watching series that haven't been officially edited-out and dumbed-down to suit the American audience, and you'll find enough dark, gritty low-fantasy stuff over there to make Dragon Age seem like Bambi-_-

Claymore, for one,

Image IPB
(in fact, those people ^ in the Claymore universe are just one of the many in anime that resemble and precede the Grey Wardens' lore)

or the awesome Basilisk:

Just check out initial part of the Basilisk intro. There's very little, if any, in Western animated media that compares to that. maybe that's why they try to make up for lack of artistic skills with computer-generated imagery these days. :P When's the last time you saw hand-drawn animation in any major American media? Yeah, besides Family Guy or South Park.

Even if action isn't your preferred genre, just check out any of Hayao Miyazaki's stuff, that easily rivals the best of Disney's classics, and has NONE of the typical anime art stereotypes.

The great thing about anime and manga is that there's something out there for everyone (excluding the people who are just plain closed minded. They'll never be satisfied). For example, if you like dark, gritty, fantasy, you would probably like Berserk. Berserk makes Dragon Age look like Care Bears by comparison.
