I just finished making a level, my first one, but when I make an area and select my level as the Area Layout, the viewport area of the editor goes black and the text 'Engine DLL Crashed' appears in the center. None of the official levels do this, only mine. The only thing that comes into the log is 'The number of rooms loaded: -1", which I guess is something to do with it? Maybe there's a setting wrong in the level somewhere. I've done lightmaps, pathfinding, and 'Do all local posts'.

What am I missing?

the number of rooms -1 has happened to me before now... restarting my toolset fixed that (i think two restarts were required though i forget, its a little temperamental)... however, its never caused a graphical error.

it doesnt sound like youre missing anything. try making a near-empty level and see if that causes the same issue? from there introduce the same features in your new level and see whats screwing it up? sorry i cant be more help.

The "number of rooms loaded -1" happens sometimes if you use (or open, close, look at, think about, or breathe on) a level while it's still in the process of exporting - that really fouls up the post to local. I suggest you re-post the level to local, then when it's done, close and re-open the toolset, then choose the level from your new area.

Restarting the toolset after doing local posts seems to have worked, thanks!

This started happening again when I went to edit the .lvl file. I began messing around with other levels and seeing if I could find out what was happening. Sure enough, when I tried to import my new level I had the same error. I narrowed it down to when you have a patch of your terrain with no material on it, it will crash the engine. To recreate it, make a new level, then delete all the materials so it goes red, then import it into an area after doing the usual export stuff. It should fail, after that, load it up again and make a new texture, cover the whole terrain with it, not missing one small spot, and try again.

I must have a small part of my terrain with no texture on it.
