Please tell me this isn't the "big" 02/01/2011 thing. Please.
Oh god... What if it is?!
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Please do not let this be the big announcement.
Androgynous characters with impossibly spiky hair and even bigger swords running around Thedas is one thing. Getting that instead of a new game though? *Shudders*
... so I fail to see how any of the stupid anime cliches people mention are likely to be a problem.
With other words: The Warden and Alistair having hair styles like Goku and Vegeta, Morrigan and Leliana having breasts which are double the size their heads are and the weapons they'll have are supersized and whatnot?
The "stupid anime cliches" are true to 99% of all recent and past animes. And they are even more than terrible.
As a sidenote: if there aren't going to be any cliches in this movie, it might become something.. we'll see.

I can't wait to see Riordan fight the Archdemon in his Gundam! Whilst Anora stands around wearing a school girl uniform! How shall Loghain be defeated in a duel? Kamehameha! That's how! How about this: Instead of wasting your time BioWare, make a new DLC, or an Expansion, or good golly! Work on Dragon Age 2!

1). Those were all made by Japanese companies. 2). Nothing is true of 99% of anime. Again, it is a medium, not a genre. You only get a very, tiny fraction of what is made in the US. I've lived in Japan for years, and trust me when I say that the spiky haired, super saiyan bull**** only makes up a very small fraction of a certain genre of anime.
If it is written by Bioware and made with heavy input from them, it could be good. If it is left to Funimation, it will be terrible. That's really all there is to it.
As I said in the other thread, anime is a medium, not a genre. It can be as great or as terrible as any other. People who snap criticize something just because it's anime have probably only seen the crap that they put on Cartoon Network in the states.
There is no reason an adaptation of DA done in anime style cannot be great. Also it's being done by an American company, so I fail to see how any of the stupid anime cliches people mention are likely to be a problem.
This. Most people seem to believe all anime have big eyes, tiny mouths and noses and talk in squeeky high pitched voices. From these descriptions you can tell the last time they saw anime was whatever was on Cartoon Network during the late ninties when Dragonball and Sailor Moon were on the air. And if you really need a frame of reference on that all anime is not moe-moe-big-eyes-Haruhi styled crap, I need to point you in the direction of, why say Cowboy Bebop, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell:SAC, and anything done by Satoshi Kon. I'm pretty these are pretty familiar even to non-anime fans (didn't want to get to out there).
That said, I hope it's an original story or a backstory of one of the companions or something. I can't take them going the route of focusing on one origin story over another. That wouldn't really be fair to the fanbase IMHO.
Great. Anime. I can't wait to see the Pumpkinhead Commander of the Grey Wardens telling Alistair how kawaii he is. I bet he's going to have those angry water lines or whatever coming out of his eyes all the time.
That's an astounding generalisation, isn't it? that's really the sorta kiddy/teen demographic as far as I can tell. I mean, look at Spirited Away for an excellent and surprisingly mature anime. Not that I'm saying that FUNimation (dubbers of Dragonball Z) can recreate that, but they had a section in Halo Legends, which proved that the artform can be taken seriously (though their part was comedy if I remember correctly).
Now, not being an anime hand - though I have been known to dabble in the aforementioned films and serials, I can't really say what is the best and what is not. However, here is an interesting video which I think shows that Dragon Age almost seems... suited, in a way, to a mildly cartoony style: . Or perhaps more canonical, look up Penny Arcade's two comic series for Origins and Awakening to see the cartoony style done with respect.

Generalizations to seem to be the norm when discussing many things related to Japan in other countries.
To be a bit more clear, the stuff that most people are talking about on this thread -- Dragon Ball, big swords, neon colors, etc. are from things that are, in Japan, marketed towards 10-14 year olds. The basic equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons in the US. Why they are the only things that make it to mainstream TV in the US is a bit beyond me, but that is how it is. There is a huge, and I mean HUGE amount of anime that is made every season and marketed towards a more mature audience.
Granted, Funimation is probably the worst possible company Bioware could have chosen to do this with, but saying it will automatically be terrible just because it is done in the anime medium is just silly.

Why? I thought their localization of Fullmetal Alchemist and Samurai Champloo weren't bad.
Also, this is the one of the team's first projects. There's no precedent for this, until we get to know who the director is.

I never saw the localized versions of those, but if they've improved since their early days then that is good. I said it because they routinely changed things, censored, had terrible VO, and terrible translation (though that is not such a concern here).
Yeah, they seem to be in the business of saving "violated" animes from the likes of the now defunct Saban Entertainment and the "will hopefully die soon" 4Kids.
while i like anime...no bashing please just because u don't like it.....i simply cannot see Drago nage as one..except if it's made like the dead space one maybe..or avatar(no...not the James Cameron one)....
and i like Berserker but God no...if dragon age would be made like that i would not watch it..doesn't really fit in my opinion
Unlike many of the detractors here, I am a long time anime fan. Neon colored hair and big swords are not the biggest problems I see in doing a DA anime.
The last time I watched an American made anime, the females all had a pair of 2-litre uplifted breasts with tiny waists and well proportioned hips, complete with miles of legs. The males had perfect shoulders that will put Atlas' to shame.
Yeah, making everything perfect will have the inverse effect. In case some of you are wondering which American anime that is.... Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles.
It is either going to be good or really bad. I just hope that there won't be spike type hair styles or pink, blue, or purple hair. Please don't have dudes look like girls and girls that look like guys.
It should be CGI not freakin anime. But of corse, nobodys gonna listen to little old insignificant me.
A full length, high quality CGI movie (I.E. something done by Pixar or Dreamworks) has a budget of somewhere between $50 and $200 million. If you care to contribute the funding to Bioware, I'm sure they will be more than happy to oblige.
