For the record, I really do not care for anime or manga, but I have a certain respect for it. It's not my cup of tea at all, but I can appreciate the good stuff and the good storytelling. Akira, Spirited Away, Space Battleship Yamato, Princess Mononoko, Ghost in the Shell, all fine anime, just not my thing. And I have no doubt this DA:Kawaii movie won't even touch those I have mentioned as far as quality. News like this just makes me ache, like an illness that must be purged. *sigh* And the worst part is that this all sounds like some anime bandwagon EA has jumped on, not an artistic direction, but a woefully ill-conceived scheme to further popularize the game. I know EA needs to make money, but Jesus, grow some balls, guys. Do something different w/ your product. That's what made it great to begin with.
Well, I suppose there is one bright spot to all this. Alistair will now look as gay as he acts. <_<

Let´s hope they try to make it adult and not teen oriented or many of the clichés listed here will happen.
P.S. The Berserk anime was that bad? The manga is quite good if you can stomach it.

I wonder whether it be following the games plot, the characters from the game, or something new entirely.

However, what bothers me more (and I wonder why no one has commented on it), is that this move prety much represents the complete commercialization of EA/Bioware. This is just another money grab along with the DLC's, and merchandising like ladies t-shirts.
They could have made a nice Sacred Ashes style movie for the fans, but it had to be commerciali$ed to appeal to the widest swath of people like everything else.

I think you guys are judging this too harshly based on the word anime. Anime does not only mean dragonball z.There are many different kinds of anime styles, like the Chronicles of Riddick anime.

You summed it up perfectly.

At least it can't be as bad as the D&D movie...

So many people seem to think anime stands for girlish guys with huge swords and spikey hair. They can't ALL be Final Fantasy characters. Those just tend to look alike. Anime can look like anything. It's only barred by imagination.
Didn't EA make an anime before out of "Dante's Inferno"?

EDIT: now if they did an Anime version of Mass Effect, and did DAO live, and had WETA do it, then that would be a good good thing indeed.
EDIT 2: Right, FUNimation is the importer... doh, this could be bad depending on who does the actual anime itself. Gibli or Bones would probably be the two houses I would choose.

And we have a winner! *gives purplesunset a Kewpie doll*
I know you like anime to pieces, Cat Lance, but the whole anime thing just leaves me a bit cold. I like Brom and Wayne Barlowe. Anime just seems so...plastic. Please convince me that my fears/distastes are misplaced and unfounded.

If that's not something you could stomach DA the anime being like then I'd say anime just isn't for you, no art form gets to please everyone.

FUNimation's not the importer. They'll animate it through their own animation team.
Dragon Agehas been selected as the first title in FUNimation’s
slate of major anime movies to be developed through FUNimation’s
Original Entertainment team since the announcement of the company’s
co-production initiative in November 2009.

But I'd like to take a moment to extrapolate what exactly anime is. Eastern Animation done specifically in Japan. There's something else called if it is Korean made, but some people here still call it anime. But I don't think everyone realizes how diverse and versatile anime can be. Heck, even western artists draw more and more heavily on anime or manga art-styles for inspiration.

Our very own aimo_ahmed drawing style hails very powerfully from japanese inspirations, with a western twist to them. Yet most people like to praise her art, so if it looks close to it, maybe people will feel better about it?

Spawn is dark, edgy and gritty, so it's not a big surprise. Not a lot of people seem to know it had its own animation made, done by Korean studios and finished in America. And it's a very recommended piece of fiction since its infinitly better than the movie.

Death Note is probably the anime of the last five years, the one everyone has talked about or seen and is hailed for its maturity for being a manga with a distinction that it is aimed at kids and teens. But the artist, Takeshi Obata is more known for this mange/anime:

So what I am saying is this:
Anime is pretty versatile, and just announcing it is going to be an "anime", hints at a certain style, but it's not really going to be an anime unless it gets made in Japan. Otherwise it'll be a cartoon. But I guess cartoons aren't edgy words anymore.
We'd have to wait and see what style they go with.

Yeah I read that aftewards and never got back to re-edit. IF they are still doing it as a co-production, it would be interesting to see who the other partner house is.monkeycamoran wrote...
