Seems like a lot of people instantly think anime involves big, teary eyed grotesque cartoons with over the top dialogue and emotions. Or spiky hair and androgynous sexes.

Go look up Wicked City. Then try to tell me they look as you describe.

You know there's plenty of "realistic," and therefore adult, anime out there. Not nearly all of it is meant to be goofy and cartoony. I much prefer the mature ones thank you.

Yes
So many people seem to think anime stands for girlish guys with huge swords and spikey hair. They can't ALL be Final Fantasy characters. Those just tend to look alike. Anime can look like anything. It's only barred by imagination.

Didn't EA make an anime before out of "Dante's Inferno"?

yea they did

Yes, unfortunately it was pretty terrible.

Well, all I can say is, if they can present a broodmother with a fraction of the grotesqueness of the climactic scene in Akira, I'll be pleased.

If FUNimation can get a co-production going with the folks over at Production I. G. who did Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit and Blood: The Last Vampire (or something along those animation styles) then it could work. With the Executive producers for the game also being the executive producers for the animation I'm going to put some trust in the fact that the original game producers sort of know what their fans will look for.

I'm confused about why people are worrying about Japanese clichés in an animated feature produced by an American company. By 'anime' I guess they mean that it'll be visually influenced by that style, but it's not going to be anime in the strict definition. (That is, animation produced in Japan.) It's entirely possible this will suck, but it's highly unlikely to involve all the characters having pink hair, transformation sequences and yelling 'kawaii!' a lot.

Of course, I like anime and manga. They're very diverse media, and as other have stated it's not all Dragon Ball Z or Sailor Moon. Personally, I prefer Trigun, Saiyuki, Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, Mushishi, Spirited Away, Perfect Blue, Cantarella ... I could go on for some time.

I can't say I'm thrilled with the whole anime aspect. Chances are very strong that I'll pass on this even though I'm a serious DA:O junky. Hopefully if there's any storyline/canon in the anime cartoon it'll be re-capped or summarized elsehwere on the web.

It was great. Honestly, I still liked The Tower of Druaga better. They both had relevance to me, but in different ways. The old one being a play on PnP games, and the new one being a play on MMO games.

Please stay away from the "typical" Asian style of anime. Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle (while still not quite the appropriate style for Dragon Age) would be much better influences than any Final Fantasy-esque design.

There is no "typical" style of anime. Just like there's no typical style of western cartoons. They're all diverse.

Do you honestly think the majority of anime is, as you put it, Final Fantasy-esque?

I'm shocked really. Why the hell are people quoting anime stereotypes?! There are plenty of anime that operate outside of them. Darker than black is an anime that while not the best is VERY good and keeps a mature atmosphere. Hey ya know what? I have yet to see a single one of those ear grinding ball biting stereotypes in it. Dragon age is Mature and bloody from the start leaves no room for any anime stereotypes. Any effort to put some in and dragon age would rape it from the start. It is going to be dark gritty and depending on the story: entertaining as hell and you will ALL be pleasently suprised. At least you will be if David Gaider gets intergrated into this project......... He is right?

A majority of anime is lackluster. Well, that's how I interpret "typical."

The majority of anything on TV anywhere is lackluster. That's a really poor way to judge a medium.

Lucy, they already have anime styled comics published and for sale. Sometimes I really wonder why these things surprise you.

You got it. That includes anime.

So, the actions required to judge the medium properly aren't worth it.

Yeah, most anime is crap. And most TV is crap. But there is some stuff that is absolutely amazing. Personally, I think the best that anime has to offer far outdoes the best that TV in general has to offer. In my book anime+DA=POTENTIAL.

All the Western company credits is fine and dandy but who is the company actually doing the drawing? That would be important to know, more so then Funimation just putting up collateral. Which is all I hope they do and do not cast their voice regulars.

Dragon Age is NOT suited for anime IMHO. I'd prefer to see an animated move like thw CGI trailers Sacred Ashes and Warden's Calling.
Oh well.

Depends with which anime you're cpomparing it with.

Something like Cowboy Beebop or Beserk (this one might be TOO bloody and gritty even for DA) ? Definately fits.

Something like Pokemon? Definately doesn't.

Anime can be every bit as compelling and emotionally jarring when done well. In most cases, it isn't done well tough...

I saw this on an anime news site and I immediately knew there would be a total ****storm going down here. And I was right.

I'm also going to go out on a limb here and bet that the next 10-30 pages of the thread will be WRPG/D&D fans RAGEing and proclaiming that DA will be turned into some kind of pokemon/sailor moon/dragon ball z hybrid because they think that's all there is to japanese cartoons.

Anime can be impressive visually and can coreograp impressive fights. Take this for example:

As for being mature and being big-eyed, spiky heaired stuff..
Check these two things:
