Hey everybody, i have a quick question. I loved ME1 and ME2. I never really payed much attention to DA:O until i found out that it was Developed by the same people that made Mass Effect.

My question to you guys who have most likely played all 3 of those games, is will i like DA:O and what are some of the similarities and differences between the Mass Effect games and Dragon Age.

Thanks for your time.

:)

haven't played me1 or 2, but my understanding is there's a lot more rpg in dragon age. if you tend to like fantasy rpg's then you'll probably like da. do you have any experience with other bioware games like the baldur's gate series or neverwinter nights?

in DA:O you control all of your party member

also, in order to maximize the efficiency of your party you have to use the tactic macro strategy.

The games are similar in terms of storytelling. They are presented in a very cinematic way, have great characters and you make choices that matter (the last point even more in my opinion).

The gameplay differs quite a lot. Dragon Age requires more strategy but no skills in shooting or something like that . The character and inventory systems are a lot more complex, but you can get into this.

If you don't have a strong disliking for classical RPGs than you will like Dragon Age i'd assume.

Depends on what it was that made you like ME1/2. If the only thing you liked were the 'shooter' elements then probably not. If you liked the storytelling, the conversations, the side plots involving companions, etc. then yeah you will probably like DA.

The biggest difference between DA and ME1/2 aside from the fantasy versus sci fi setting is that DA is more of a tactical party rpg and ME is a shooter. ME tends to have a more visceral feel in combat because you are gunning down your enemies in real time with some help from your squad mates. DA combat is a little more strategic. As long as you think you will like that kind of combat system I would say buy it.

Yea, the main reason i loved Mass Effect was for the story. I liked the gameplay but the story in games have always been the most important thing for me. I've never played a game with a combat system like DA:O. Also, the only type of games that i've never been able to play are turn based RPGs (Final Fantasy).

It is kind of a tough call then, DA definitely has the kind of storytelling and compelling world that you like.  But combat does have a little bit of a turn based feel.  The way it works is that you control one character (either your main character or one of your party members) and three others will be controlled by AI.  You can pause the game to give the different characters individual orders and then when you unpause and resume combat they will execute those orders.  This may sound like ME1/2, but in this game it really is necessary to micro different actions for different party members on many fights, especially at higher difficulty levels.  You also get the same level of control over your party members as you do your main character.

On the other hand, if you turn the difficulty down or are playing on a console (which I am told is easier) then it may not be necessary to pause that often and the game will not feel as turn based.  The game is designed in such a way that the difficulty in combat is managing the different tactics your party will use.

Personally I like the pause and play combat systems better than FF turn based systems because on easy fights you dont end up wasting a ton of time, you can just not pause the game and mow your enemies down in real time.  You only end up really microing on the hard fights.

Oh ok, thanks a lot man, i'm definately gonna give this game a shot because i'm a sucker for games with good stories and i think i can handle the combat system. Oh yea, and i'm getting it for Xbox 360 so that should help as well.

Your post really helped, thanks.

Just stick with it... Dragon Age is classy from the start, but gameplay wise it gets more rewarding over time.

You'll like it. And the good thing is that in DA:O you can control all in your group (you can switch).

They are similar in structure. But not in mechanics.

Ever since Baldur's Gate I put video games into two categories: the Clickers and the Thinkers. I've never played a Clicker game since.

If you're the type of person who enjoys a good clickfest then you'll find DAO to be completely different. I'd describe it as a thinking man's game. What armour should I wear? What's the best sword? What spells should I use in this situation? A WTF, killing a Revenant is impossible moment. What potions do I need to make? Should I steal from kids depriving them of their pocket money via my Rogue? How the hell do I fight my way out of THIS? Where should I place my points?

Battle strategy is very important in order to win a battle, though there are some characters you can create that make this game far too easy in my opinion. You may just as well solo the game in such a case, the other characters are only there for company, you don't really need them if you take the God route. Some characters can become way too overpowered. On the other hand battles can sometimes be long and tedious and God helps to shorten such battles. You don't need to take God along every time.

What camp are you in? If you're a Clicker you won't enjoy this game. If you're a Thinker who enjoys working out a strategy then you'll love it.

DA has similarities to MA in mechanics so you should be able to pick it up easy enough. DA is a lot deeper though than MA...more RPG than a shooter.

I found it to be very different, but very much rewarding in the end and by far,for me at least, much more complicated, you really have to think how to fight and what to buy,and use, you have so many options that it can overwhelm you if you're used to just run and gun games...like I used to...but with practice you can get a lot better, quickly, and the story is GREAT specially if you like Tolkien like worlds.I loved it....and you can play it many times to do different things! From a guy who never played real RPG games,I'd say totally go for it!I was a great first exprerience from me...one thing though try to save very often,...or you'll be cursing a lot!

If you want liked ME1 more then 2 because of the stronger focus on story, you will "probably" like DA:O.

If you liked ME2 over 1 and cant stop talking about combat upgrades, your going to hate DA:O.

Hope that helps

I loved ME1 and ME2. So I started to play DAO. Let me tell you this ME1 is epic and ME2 is ok. But DAO is the greatest game I have ever played. The replay value is 1000% better then ME2. I have played it for 3 months now and I still find new stuff to buy and adventure to explore not to mention the dlc kikcs ass.
