You can make your skin colour brown, I think - admittedly it just looks like a white guy with a tan though, rather than black or south/south-east asian. The in-game reason given is that people with darker skin come from Rivain (for example), which is much further north than Ferelden. I'm not saying it's a good reason, just that it was the given reason. There are mods you can use for extra skin tones (check dragonagenexus.com), though.

What are you on? You can make your character black, white, brown, yellow, or undead colored.  You can even do a stereotypical African nose.
Also, there are people of varying colors in the game. Not sure how you didn't notice them.

If I recall correctly, people with dark skin live in Rivain.

Awakening had white people colored black. Or did I not see the characters correctly?

Yeah, I thought some of the "darker" skin color choices were odd...or at best only fitting for "moderate" skin tones that weren't really black or white (though I'm white myself, so I'm probably not a good judge, or they only look crappy on my 360 with my crappy TV). The lack of dark-skinned NPCs, outside of Sten, is explained by the game being set in Fereldan, which is supposed to be based off of a sort of historical England, but you should at least get to choose whatever you want for your PC. =P

If you are playing on the PC and not on a console you can try checking for some mods (from here, for example: http://www.dragonagenexus.com/), there are several that add new skin tones, though I don't know if there are any good ones, as I have the 360 version myself.

For me, the only skin tone that was decent was the Caucasian one. Even the vampire skin tone looked like crap.

For me this is a ground breaking game in how it deals with Races, Religion and class.

You can see how the real medieval society was presented when you get acquainted with the Dwarfs, and how they brutally treath common people.

I particularly love how the Elves was presented as Gypsies of Ferelden, both in the ghetto and as Travellers.

I havent yet dwelt in Religion butt it seems as a deep part of the game, i love the whole Chantry, Templar, Mage drama.

The continent of Thedas is roughly analogous to Europe and the country of Ferelden is roughly analogous to Britain in terms of its culture.  However, just because X happened to one extent or another in Medieval Europe doesn't mean that X is going to have a direct analogue in DA:O, in any of the expansion packs, or in DA2 for that matter.  Their world is not our world.  Some things will not be found there even though they exist here and vice versa.  There might not even be a human black or yellow sub-race on this particular planet if Shaka Zulu or a Yojimbo don't figure into BioWare's plans.

This has been brought up too many times to count.  Bottom line, DA:O was a large project and if X wasn't strictly necessary to pull off the illusion of a living, breathing Ferelden, X didn't make the cut.  Try the archived forums for a more thorough explanation that includes responses from developers.

The Rivani are more or less cousins to both the Spanish and Italians.

I am still playing through Origins for the nth time and there are several people of color...so I don't get the complaints. Even some of the Chasind are darker than the tint of most caucasian skin tones. Most of the NPCs might be caucasian but this game world takes place in a feudal fantasy world. In feudal Europe, Japan, India, ect...most people didn't travel but fifty miles from their home village at most. It's not like they hop in the SUV and ride off to Antiva or catch a plane flight to the Free Marches. So likely you won't see a ton of racial variety. Dragon Age 2 will likely be elsewhere than Ferelden, so we'll likely have a different cultural feel attached to most of the NPCs.

Name any NPC in the game (including DA:A) that has an appearance that corresponds to the typical phenotype of Earth's Asiatic or Negroid peoples - that goes beyond a skin tone slider for PCs. (We'll drop the issue of Polynesians, Native Americans, or Australian Aborigines.)

I didn't see any. BTW, I get it, Ferelden is an analogue of medieval England, but the Moors were already in England and many other parts of Europe by the 10th century. Chinese merchants were already in many capitals after Marco Polo's visit in the 13th century.

I'm black and so is my character. PC version. However there should be more NPC of color but, it is what it is. Games of today do a much better job of offering modern race choices.

There were no black characters for the same reason there were no black characters in Jade Empire. The setting really doesn't support it.

I wouldn't really expect to see anything other than characters with slightly darker skin tones depending on how far north future games are set. Well that or expanding the map to other continents like where the Qunari came from.

And the only contact Thedas has had with a foreign culture has been the Qunari.

The setting isn't a perfect mirror of actual history.

According to the developers, the qunari are most like the Seljuk Turks.

For a second, I thought the topic title was an order rather than an observation.
