For a second, I thought the topic title was an order rather than an observation.

lmao i was just about to comment on that, the title seems to indicate no black people are allowed to post here, seriously toss a question mark in the topic title huh? there's a diffrence between a statement (current title) and a pondering question (proper title)

Anywho, you can make any race you want if you're compitant enough to know how to use the charecter creator, i for example have  lovely Idian(India indian) human noble girl & i usualy like my elvaan girls a tropical bronze

Now this also begs another question about the poorly thought out topic, do you mean there is no african based people in dragon age or any dark skinned people in dragon age? it's specific so specify again, now obviously Duncan and the entire Qunari race have dark skin and the qunari; while their culture is asian-y; are more akin to a african esc features, minus the pointy ears, Zevran also has a dark skin tone

This has already been mentioned but BW said that black people in Thedas live on another continent. Also why do people keep on saying you can't make black characters? Because I'm playing through as one right now.

Why there should be a black (or yellow) character anyway? Is this some kind of communist law to include every race in every game?

Qunari = Asians.

Well, I've asked this question before, are the Qunari actually simply large humans, or a distinct race of giants?

Because if they are nonhuman, then they are really another race -- as in, being another species, like dwarves and elves. Not a different "variety" of people.

They don't resemble Earth's Asiatic peoples, although their culture seems to be a mix of Asian Buddhism and the Ottoman Turks.

Unless they unseen power or ability, they are just a large human. Just to point out, we are using the word "race" here in different ways:

In game, race = another species

In RL, race = skin tone, but still we are all human

Would the Moors actually have been Negroid?

The term was used generically for a lot of Muslims from North Africa and therefore included Berbers and other groups, but yes it also encompassed people we would today consider Negroes -- to use that out-dated term (most people would say "Blacks").

Generally, when they were called Black Moors or "blackamoores" -- they were. There's some debate, but the description of Othello in Shakespeare's play makes it pretty clear he probably was one.

I think we all should be thankful for the fact that there are no Orcs in Dragon Age.

I think the odds of bumping into a black person in medieval England would be pretty slim. Yes, there were Moorish traders, but it's not like they'd be really common, and they'd probably be north Africans who are much lighter-skinned than sub-Saharan Africans. I suppose they could have put one in Denerim. If the game were set in a more cosmopolitan place like Antiva or the Tevinter Imperium rather than Ferelden, it would make sense to have darker-skinned people appear.

Since Bioware's already done a game with an Asian setting, maybe they'll do a project sometime with a wholly African theme. That would be novel and interesting. Or they could get the rights to do a game set in Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea--I think everybody's dark skinned there...although come to think of it, that would probably be more Melanesian than African.

How come this only comes up if the setting is dominated by fairskinned people? Did anyone went "How come there's no white/black people in Jade empire?" Or did it make sense there would be mostly asian people in an asian setting Posted Image

Ferelden is considered a pretty out of the way barbaric kingdom by other nations. If we compare it to britain during middle ages I doubt many people there saw a black person their entire life.

As for the character creator you can make any sort of character you want and different skintones are available, so making a darkskinned and african looking char is possible, I even think one is available as a preset face.

I will say one thing, they did have a lot of redheads in the game.

That is because the land is entitled Ferelden., or as I prefer to pronounce, For Eldon.

This is my RL name which rests atop my own once bright red haired locks. And all my Wardens have such hair, too. Co-ink-a-dink?

I think I saw a couple darker skinned NPCs, don't know if they were black or not. For instance the Merc leader who carries Aodh I believe. A few others. No major characters though.

Of course, knowing that black people exist and actually seeing one on the street are two different things. If the majority of Moors weren't black, and there aren't very many Moors around in the first place, the chances of actually running into a black one are pretty damn low.

Ferelden is a northern country, so native people there are white. Black/white characters aren't mandatory, they may or may not be included depending on game's world.

Southern rather than northern but it's the same thing in the sense of being so close to the pole the area doesn't get much sunlight, making it sensible for the population to remain pretty light skinned.

Ferelden is chiller then say Rivain, I gather.  But is the planet elliptical to cause a polar variation?  I know it's geeky, but I've wondered about it.  And wouldn't it be nice to have some concept of size for the world?  How big is the Frozen Seas, for example.

That brings up the question. Do this fantasy world work the same as the real world? Heh, enlighten me.

The wiki says Thedas is south of the equator.

Thedas is a continent in the southern hemisphere.

. . .

Beyond the Korcari Wilds to the south is a frozen
wasteland that only the Chasind Wilders have explored. There's also land further
west but the Hunterhorn Mountains inhibit travel - as do the jungles of
Donarks in the northwest. Par Vollen lies to the north, much closer to
the equator.

To get really geeky, variation in climate with distance from the equator would happen as long as the planet's shape causes sunlight to come in at a lower angle at higher latitudes...even if it were flat, there would be some latitudinal variation, particularly if the planet was large compared to the distance from the sun.  Well, I guess if the planet formed all or part of a sphere with the sun in the center there would be no latitudinal variaton, but that would be a very bizarre concept.

And yes, it would be nice to have concepts of distances and the passage of time in the game.
