Qunari = Asians.

Well, I've asked this question before, are the Qunari actually simply large humans, or a distinct race of giants?

Because if they are nonhuman, then they are really another race -- as in, being another species, like dwarves and elves. Not a different "variety" of people.

They don't resemble Earth's Asiatic peoples, although their culture seems to be a mix of Asian Buddhism and the Ottoman Turks.

Qunari are a distinct race of giants.
Like sten said while his time in a cage after you remarked about how long he went without food or water.

There are orcs in DA. They're just called Darkspawn.

The Darkspawn are not orcs, they are far more complex and bluntly...disturbing

The very thought that the wicked grin of a Hurlock or the Horrific giggling of a Broodmothers many breasts against her mounds of foul smelling flesh could be equated to the watered down fantasy trope of Orcs is Ridiculous !

Giggling breasts of a broodmother? Hmm, I got the Collector's Edition and my game didn't come with that. I hope you meant jiggling? Posted Image

If they giggled, it would make them more horrific.

I'm pretty sure I saw a few black dwarves in Orzammar...

As for darkspawn vs orcs and complexity, well, I guess it depends on which orcs you are talking about. The warhammer orcs have a more interesting concept than the hurlocks though, imo (the "mass consciousness" thing, the mushroom thing, unless that's been retconned etc). The fall from heaven orcs are a nice concept as well, but then that whole setting is excellent.

I think aaniadyen might have been commenting on the fact that Genlocks look, for all intents and purposes, a lot like orcs. At least they do to me; one of the reasons they're my least favourite darkspawn, they look considerably less horrific than the other kinds.

I guess. All I really meant was they serve the same purpose here that orcs did in LotR, which was one of Bioware's main influences for DA.

Like orcs, darkspawn are generic, monstrous-humanoid opponents.

Fighting darkspawn is no different than fighting people, they just look uglier. That's why they're the same as orcs.

I still haven't played the Witcher, but I hear it really beats DA in the category of monster variety, where you're fighting monsters that are, well, monstrous (i.e. nonhumanoid).

I'm glad there are no blacks. They would ruin the game.

I know I saw an Asian-looking noble woman at the landsmeet. I believe she was standing in the background whenever Bann Alfstanna was talking.

Since we're on the subject of hair and skin color, can anyone tell me what's the darkest hair color in the character generator? On my screen it looks dark brown. Is it supposed to be black? I always thought it was weird that there wasn't a black hair color for our characters.

In the variety of monsters, Witcher does have some really good non huminoid ones.  And overall its a great game.  Can't wait for the sequel next year.

Most fantasy settings take place in a fictional European society, so it would be odd to see dark skinned people running around.

Well, where would the dark skinned people come from in DA? Typically their skin is dark because they come from places where they need more melanin for protection against the sun, such as in Arabia and so far I haven't encountered that kind of environment in DA.

actually i agree there shouldn't be alot different races in DA but they could of had there own origins (i really don't care if they add them or not i've been playing game since was 6 now at 32 i think they came a long ways with this issue of race compare to back then)

You might want to look at some of these paintings.

http://moors2.argmaur.org/

Medieval Europe was not monotone.

Here's a medieval statue of St. Maurice.

Europeans did not suddenly encounter black Africans in the 16th century/age of colonization.

BTW, they seem to have been treated very equally in the Middle Ages, at least when they were Christians.

I know what the Moors are. Muslims from Northern Africa but like I said, DA so far doesn't have a place where they would come from. The environment is European which doesn't lead to the sudden spawning of dark skinned people.

If you're going to put them in a game then they need some explanation as to where they originated from or it's just silly.

How come this only comes up if the setting is dominated by fairskinned people? Did anyone went "How come there's no white/black people in Jade empire?" Or did it make sense there would be mostly asian people in an asian setting Posted Image

Probably because Jade Empire is an anamoly.  There aren't a lot of games focuses on Asian theme and most that are, are fighting games with a mix of people anyways.

Its a trend in RPG's that nearly all games have abysmal racial variance.  Off the top of my head I can only think of 2 black people in RPG games of any significant meaning, the dude from FF7 and Sasz from FF13.

You can claim that there are dwarves, elves, etc. but really they are simply embodyments of various aspects of the Anglo centric cultural tendencies.  Elves are stereotypical aristocrats (though in DA they are flipfloped with humans), Humans are typically middle class or slums, Dwarves are drunken rednecks (which I guess in the Anglican view would be Irish/Scottish).  But there is little at all in the ways of Afican, native North/South American cultural influences and race even less.

Bottom line is, some of us are tired of playing Whitey.
