Alistair a whimp? He fooled alot of people, but not me. Alistair is tough as they come. He hides this very well and his act of being stuipd is well just that, an act or a talent as he says. He is highly intelligent even though he hides this. Sten makes him show his true side, he does have a backbone. I don't know who is the master manipulator Alistair or Morrigan. They both used you to get what they wanted. Especially if you're a HNF.

Alistair would defend his love with his life and he doesn't seem to have a roaming eye at least not in Origins. In Awakenings I wasn't so sure, as his Queen, I was shipped off to become Warden Commander. However, he made sure I had support with his paying Herron and Wade to be there for me to make new weapons for me. I found it very strange that Anders who looks alot like Alistair happens to ask you what you're going to do after this mission is over. You have the option to return to the palace or not return.

What women doesn't want her love to romance her and think she is the most beautiful woman in the world and he would die for you? Every woman who plays this game melts at that line, "Maker's Breath, but your beautiful." This is the type of man that a woman wants, a man that is loyal to her above all else, this is the appeal of Alistair. I don't think Zevran would be loyal. When Zevran starts taking an interest, Alistair makes his play for his terrority so-to-speak. What man doesn't understand this? If a man has the the hots for a woman and he wants her to be his, he is going to do whatever it takes to sway her. Romance and all. Personally, I would have liked to see Alistair do more in the romance department. More gifts and just asking how I feel about things, am I alright after that last battle we just fought, especially after declaring his love.

Personally, I want revenge on Morrigan for sleeping with my man. Alistair honey, if you betray me I know how to slice you and Morrigan both to ribbons. You had my permission on the one time thing to save our lives but do it again and your dead meat. Arl Eamon be damed.

The answer is simple: as a knight, or Templar in this matter, Alistair is chivalric, and ladies back in the Middles Ages, so to speak, usually enjoyed how a man chose selfless sacrifice for his lady. If I were a lady, today or back then, I would appreciate a man who stuck to the now-dead ways of chivalry.

He's a douchebag, and women have a weakness for douchebaggery.

You are going to get burned for saying that you know...but yes I agree that Alistair is a douchebag, he masks it well but he is exactly that.

Personally I get more into the tactics and the violence of these games than the human relationships sides. IRL I would want someone that let me raise a farm instead of fighting darkspawn. Or I would join the chantry... Or a brewer or pub cook.

He's a romantic. He has a wide streak of chivalry and doesn't take the opportunity to jump into bed as soon as he gets the chance. Idealistic. Clumsy in an endearing way. Able to laugh at himself. Amusingly clueless at times. ;) He tries to support what's right (even if he doesn't always manage it, but everyone makes mistakes). He can talk about/admit his feelings and emotions quite readily.

Plus...you know...muscular hotness telling you you're beautiful. What's not to like about that? ;)

Oh, and the cheese. Love cheese.

I'm curious. What's the technical definition of "douchebag"? It's an American term and I don't get the connotations...

I would call him a bit of a "spong" - meaning he's goofy and a bit liable to put his foot in his mouth. But he's surprisingly good in social situations - the other party members (apart from the ones who don't get on with anyone - a la Morrigan, Sten and Shale) seem to get on fine with him, even Zevran seems to like him even though he teases him.

What defines a douchebag?

According to the all-knowing wikipedia...

Douchebag: The term refers to a person, usually male, with a variety of negative qualities, specifically arrogance and engaging in obnoxious and/or irritating actions without malicious intent.

So I suppose Alistair is a douchebag IF you find him obnoxious/irritating. Morrigan would no doubt approve of this term.

I've heard it asserted that "douchebag" can be a "feminist insult" in ways that most slams that borrow from gendered language aren't.  Douches are, after all, an unnecessary, irritating, bill of goods we're sold and told we really need when we don't.  So a person who fits that description...

(Long way of saying: I agree, Morrigan would approve.)

I like Alistair he keeps a sarcastic/funny/optimistic attitude despite our incredible task and all the stuff that has happened to him. I'd have a beer with him and watch the game he is an easy going humble guy. As for romance I can't speak on since I don't have any female characters, but from a friendship point of view I think he is a good character and good friend.

It is always intriguing to discover that all discussion's on the forum about Alistair's appeal sooner or later becomes a group of teenage boys giving helpful advice to adult ladies about what women really finds attractive in men...Posted Image

If you are more into the tactics than human relations . . . you would do better to be a military leader than a farmer or a brewer.  Real military successes think in terms of tactics and put the soap opera stuff aside.

Like Loghain.  He started out a farmer too.

Ironic eh?

Actually, he gets along quite well with Sten after a breaking in period.  Actually . . . Sten is the only party member I can think of that EVERYONE gets along with once he warms up to the Warden.

I don't know I think Sten dislikes Morrigan though Leliana calling him a softie is golden.

You are mistaken.  Zevran never spectacularly dumps you in front of all of the nobility of Ferelden.

Neither does Alistair. If anything he dumps you in front of your companions but of course you could always assume this cutscene that is also used for Anora speaking to you after the Landsmeet is not meant to be an indicator for Alistair's character. Also Zevran is not forced into a position of responsibility that requires him to marry a preferably fertile noblewoman.

Other than that, yes, Zevran is incredibly loyal, a good friend and a very rewarding romance option.

A douchebag is an a**h*le. And Alistair totally isn't one.
An example from television: if you watched the last couple of seasons of 'Supernatural', Zachariah was a total douche.

Disagreed. One can refine it for one's own use, of course, but that's the common usage.

I suspect people's personal definitions of douchebag will vary, but regardless, Alistair is not a douchebag.  *shrugs*  You don't have to like him, but it's a stretch to make that definition fit him.
