From what I've gathered, some women like Alistair because of reasons like how he is funny, is sensitive, kind, handsome, and endearing but also brave.

Hi, rgon! Glad you found another thread. ;) And yeah, that pretty much hits the nail on the head.

He's very handsome, adorable, sweet, caring, naive and therefore can be manipulated at will. Perfection incarnate.

Alistair is obviously not the blueprint for what every woman wants. As Errant_knight so eloquently put it, women do not have a hive mind. On the other hand a lot of female gamers, though far from all, DO find him attractive.

Now all those male players who think Alistair is just a wimp can either deduce that all those women are crazy, or they can listen and maybe in the process learn a thing or two about the difference between what many men thinks is how a guy ought to be and what a many women thinks a man ought to be.

I am the first to admit that we are all individuals and any claim in the name of all men/women/any group you care to mention, is a lie. Nevertheless I have the advantage of age and experience and I can say that I have found that in general, what young men find impressive in a man, often is not quite what a woman find impressive. If you are a man who values what women think about you, that might just be a useful piece of information.

Do with that knowledge what you like, but, whatever we do find attractive, cool or impressive, let's be open to the fact that others have other opinions. If you are not willing to learn from others experience, why not at least focus on what you think is good and spend less time on derogatory remarks about what other people like?

Guy, you are acting like this forum contains all the women in the world. If I were to respect Alistair, then I would easily try and find some good advice from his character (although I would never look for advice from some fictional character). In my own opinion, Loghain is the better man of the two, and Alistair is a wimp regardless of what anyone says. Of course, I found Alistair pretty funny at times, but that doesn't mean he is a poster boy of what a man should be. Alistair's behavior in the landsmeet was unforgiveable, and no amount of joking could ever help his character redeem himself in my eyes.

This whole thread is about why women find Alistair attractive. All I have done is to add my two cents on the subject. The post you quoted above was aimed a men primarily, regardless of what you may think. I may be overly optimistic, but I assumed that a guy who reads the posts on thread titled "Help men everywhere understand the female obsession with Dragon Age's Alistair" was reading becuase they did want to learn.

All the characters are flawed. Sometimes we only see their deepest flaws or best moments if we play in a certain way. So you can always learn form other people's experiences if you are open to listening. If you are not interested in understanding in why women do like Alistair, then why are you even on this thread? There are plenty of existing threads where you can say that Loghain is a much better person than Alistair.

Or you can start a new thread and title it. "Help women understand why some men thinks Loghain is a much better man than Alistair." I'd be happy to share my views on that too, but that's not really the subject of this thread. I even know there are a few women out there who think Loghain is hot too.

I think it's easiest for a human noble to like Alistair from the start. How do others see it as a mage? I played it that the whole templar thing was seriously offputting at first. Great--I finally get out of that damned tower and now I have my own personal templar following me around ready to skewer me at the first sign of anything amiss! But once you learn how much he disliked being in the chantry and how affable he is, it's hard not to warm up to him.

Considering Alistair does a bumbling job of flirting with a female mage straight from Ostagar, and the first thing you see of him is that he is no ordinary templar, my EF mage was disarmed immediately.  In fact, I think a mage is one of the best pairings with him.  The templar-mage tension is part of the interest and charm.

My HNF does end up with him, but I honestly think it is easier for my elves to relate to him.  He's a commoner, has had no home or family, and in some ways has been manipulated and beaten down by society.  Despite being houseless as of game-time, my HNF cannot relate to that as well as a mage can.  My Dalish Warden is daughter of a keeper, which was Arlathan nobility, but has lived rough; Alistair is a prince who grew up sleeping in stables.  Obviously there is some prejudice against humans for a Dalish to get through, but again, it is not just the compatibility that makes a romance interesting, rather the ups and downs.  All of my elven characters who end up with him find it in the end a healing thing that there is a human man, a former templar, who is so kind to them.

His behavior at the Landsmeet was unforgivable?? Pray tell - you mean having moral values, high ethical standards and emotions is unacceptable? From a robot or Zombie, perhaps .  I for one, admired Alistair's expression of anger at the Landsmeet.

Yes and Loghain betraying his King (which IS tantamount to betraying your country - BTW) and the Grey Wardens, leaving them to die on the Battlefield was such an act of patriotism and heroics <_<

Well I thought I'd add my perspective as a bi woman that usually plays male characters so I haven't played Alistair's romance passed the first time he kisses the Warden. I have played the game many times, but have only began that romance with Alistair once. I almost always romance Morrigan and she is my favorite romance in the game. Still I adore Alistair's character and once I get his approval to 100 there is a bug in the game where he'll call my male Warden his love and ask what is his desire when I click on Alistair. I find it funny (I imagine Alistair really needs to get laid by this point if he is calling my Warden "love") and at the same time as a real woman I love it as well. So it is kind of weird.

Anyway, I never really thought that the Alistair romance would do anything to me since in so many ways I would say I don't want the standard fairy tale romance. I want angst and despair and a sad ending which is why I like Morrigan's so much (plus she is the hottest companion hands down to me). Yet that one time when I started Alistiar's romance...I was just swept off my feet by him and then was promptly mad at myself for feeling that way. I even dreamed about Alistair that night and I've never dreamed of Dragon Age. So I would have to say that whatever the writers did with Alistiar's romance they did right and it makes me a little POed since I hate being swept away in a fairy tale romance (and yes I realize that Alistair's romance doesn't have to have a good ending, but both the bad ending and the good ending make me not want to finish the romance for different reasons).

Edit:  I also don't even find Alistair all that hot (though he isn't ugly by any stretch).  He's really not my type lookwise (I like pretty boys), so it is his amazing character that gets me.

I think it's very carefully crafted dialogue and back story that Gaider set  for him.  Every now and then Alistair comes up with stuff which makes you go "Oh... interesting..." and which gives him both depth and another set of layers. Even his battle cries are incredibly varied, expressing all kinds of emotion (sexual gratification: "Yes. Oh yes!" Humour/despair: "New plan... must bite ankles", Self-pity: "Injured, as in me, as in here...") . Also the animation, and this tends to be overlooked, his facial expressions are second to none from desolation and grief to humour, arrogance, joy and embarassment. He is a perfect pixelated construct.

That's an interesting point about elves.  You become so accustomed to people being outright rude to you, that the fact that Alistair is actually pleasant to you is a welcome surprise.

Just as an example, my current Dalish mage character got the following exchange entering Redcliffe:

A: So there you have it.  That's what I had to tell you.  Now can we please move on, and I'll just pretend you still think I'm some nobody who was too lucky to die with the rest of the Grey Wardens.
PC: What does that make me?
A: (in a warm, sincere voice)  The reason why I say I was lucky.

She was at 33 Neutral with him, had barely done anything to warrant such a compliment except be concerned about him regarding Duncan.  Yet to have a human man say something so nice to her... *categories blown, initiate swoon sequence*

I made a video of that conversation, you can see it here.

Addai... What armor is Alistair wearing in that video clip? It looks awesome.

It's funny reading this thread; you can really learn a lot about people's mindset by what they find romantically stirring. I find the Alistair romance to be one of the highlights of the game and one of the reasons I played through more than once. But I would never expect everyone to agree with me or even find him irresistible for the same reasons.

The only posts that bug me are the ones where some random poster wants women to feel stupid for being attracted to Alistair's character. Just admit that we're not all alike in what we want in a romance (even a digital one). Men who find those women to be crazy or stupid or otherwise sanity challenged probably aren't going to end up with that type of woman in their own lives. Just let it go and worry about something else.

Indeed it is.  Since I respec Alistair to dual wield, it works better than the big tin cans, at least for early game.

Which mod did you get Addai to play a Dalish Mage? The one I wanted to get had the problem that it also pegged the PC as having also been from the Mage Origin.

Yes, it's true that Ali isn't every woman's dream. I am a woman (last time I checked, anyway) and he doesn't do it for me.

My first playthrough was as a male and I found Al funny and endearing, but a bit puppyish. That's not a quality I personally find attractive, although I can certainly see why other women squee over him. Physically speaking, I I find Al blandly handsome, and not my type at all. I tend to go for dark, saturnine men, so obviously I'm a Loghain girl - something that also puts me at odds with Alistair.

To date, Bioware have only provided me with one love interested that really made me go all squee and silly, and that would be Garrus. I guess I'm looking for someone a bit more badass than our Al. He is, after all, the Chuck Norris of Turians.

I only know of one.  People in the Circle do act as if you're a Circle mage, but there's nothing to be done about that.  My Dalish mage already thought the whole place was batsh*t crazy, the fact that people kept thinking they knew her just added to the impression.  LOL

Otherwise it works great.  I am enjoying this pt more than... maybe more than any.  It's the only one that inspired me to write some backstory, etc., which I did partly because the backstory is not covered in-game so I thought it could use some extra explanation.

So does everyone else treat you as Dalish, in the ending or a mage. Or is it just like going around as an elf mage from the circle?

Most of the other game interactions treat you as Dalish.  You do get a few (Mage) options, like at Soldier's Peak etc.  It really works well.  I don't think there's been a single immersion-breaking thing outside the Circle.

You can see in some of my other videos that my PC is getting Dalish dialogue options, e.g. here and here.  Zathrian's clan treats you as they would any Dalish PC.

No, we haven't. We're Wardens, our duty is to defeat Darkspawn and Archdemon using any tools available. Hell, the idea of making Loghain a Warden comes from another Warden, a far more experienced one than either of us at that...

This is just the way I think Alistair thinks of allowing Loghain into the Wardens.  Personally, I have to agree with him.  Loghain is out for this own self interest in my opinion and not someone I'd like watching my back in battle.  I think Alistair feels the same way, Loghain can't be trusted.  If you can't trust you're fellow warden to do the right thing, how can you trust him to guard you're back in battle.  From my view point and I suspect Alistair's as well, you can't.
