My game crashes on a regular basis with the new and supposedly updated drivers. I run with a Nvidia GeForce GT 220. The previous drivers worked fine, but rolling back to those doesn't work (oddly). Deleting everything on my computer even vaguely related to Nvidia-drivers and reinstalling the old drivers doesn't work either. Anyone outthere in the same situation have a link or an idea where I could go look for functional drivers? I would appreciate it.

What's the exact problem? Give some more details about the crashes. Do they come with an error code? And post your system specs. That's kind of necessary when posting technical issues.

Right, no errormessages. Just a crash, and then the computer has to restart. It happens randomly, accompanied by a short buzz, and then nothing. Computer shuts down.

An Acer Aspire M3203 with...

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

AMD Athlon™ II X2 240 Processor (2 CPUs), ~2.8GHz

GeForce GT 220

8192MB RAM

Realtek High Definition Audio

That's it, I suppose...

Power supply information?  Temperature logging results?

No idea. Listen, these problems started THE SECOND I updated my drivers. It ran flawlessly for months without anything even remotely resembling a crash up until then. My question was if any of you have an idea where to get the older drivers that don't mess up my game? Nvidias and Acers webpages were a bust. Fileplanet and so on also didn't do squat for me.

On the Nvidia website you can search for Beta and Archived drivers, you sure you haven't looked there?

You overlooked some archived Geforce drivers on the nVIDIA site.  You (may have been) using an unsupported PC (there is no laptop support, for very good reasons -- Acer sells a great many more laptops than desktops, and I don't keep up with model names / numbers for any branded products).  nVIDIA doesn't provide the same archival services for laptops that is available for desktops.  There are, however, a wide variety of unofficial sources, including Omega.

Further, the 220 is from the lower quarter of the performance range for Mainline cards; rather distant from the Recommended level, meaning you cannot expect high resolutions and high image settings at the same time from it without some sacrifices in frame rates -- you may have overtaxed it through choosing too high a screen resolution.

I already tried that. Nvidias customer support reffered me to that page. I tried installing every driver from my search, and they still crash my game.

220 is marginally above minimum? It works fine on my end. At least, it used to. Then I got new drivers, and everything went to Hell...

When you say the PC has to restart after the crash, do you mean you manually restart it or does it happen automatically? If the latter is the case the problem might be overheating or a bad power supply.

If you are absolutely sure it is a video driver issue you have to make sure all leftovers from your driver are removed before reinstalling. Use Driver Sweeper.

Every Nvidia driver since the release of Mass Effect 2 has been compatible. There is one driver version that literally fries graphics cards because of bad fan control but I think it's no longer available on the Nvidia site.

Indeed, I use the 220 and I have never had any lag during the game when using it.

Now for the problem, when i updated my drivers my computer consantly got a BSOD even when not running my games, I fixed this simply by redownloading the drivers, it works perfectly now.

www.guru3d.com should have some old drivers. As well as tweaked/modified drivers.

Well, I guess I should elaborate on that a bit. The game crashes the computer completely. It sends it into permanent standby mode, and I can't get it back on. So it's sort of still on, but I'm still forced to shut it off completely and boot it up from scratch.

Yeah. For Vista. The oldest drivers for Windows 7 are drivers I've already tried with the same result.

And I tried that like 10 times now. Same result as before. Crash.

But it seems I'm not the only one with that problem, judging by what other people write in other places on the web. Seems like a lot people have been waiting for a fix for this particular problem for several months now.

Guess I'll have to get in line with the others waiting for the dev's to stop scratching their... uhh, necks, and get a patch out that remedies this issue.

Edit: I just realised I have the same problem in Mass Effect 1, as in the sequel. Hmm...

Ahhhh, lookie here. I found something online:

"After you reach 550 MB of pagefile (see the Task Manager in Windows) the game may crash or lead to loop graphic sequences. You will need to reboot your system or manually clean the pagefile. This bug is caused by nVidia graphic cards and Realtek audio card. One solution is to run the game in window mode and disable music and speech."

That may be it. Anyone know of any other solution for this?

It's not a G.210, no, but it's just not a very good card, even compared to a Geforce GT240, which sits more or less at the mid-point of the Mainline for 2009, not for 2010.  ATI had moved the boundaries eight months ago, and the GTX465 is still mot a Mainline card.  ATI's next generation will be out before there is a Fermi for the Medium performance level, where the HD 5670 and 5750 have marked that range out now.   What we have right now is a card like the GTS250 that nominally is from the same generation as the GT200s, but in fact is a Geforce 9800 GT plus with a new name, and a GTX260 with a price decrease.

I didn't mean to say the 220 was "bad", and the HD 5570 isn't either, but neither of them are really what a game player needs to be shopping for when it's a "modern" game to deal with.  The 220 just isn't good enough (IMO) for either of the ME games, but DA  took five years from conception to delivery and didn't end up being state of the art eight months ago.

Graphics Drivers are notoriously known for their ability to affect temperatures on graphics cards.

It sounds, By the way you've described it, Like your card is overheating, Though, Not necessarily through fault of your own.

The "permanent standby" as you've called it, Is simply the card shutting down in an effort to reduce thermal output. Resulting in an unresponsive black screen. The fan will remain running for the same reason. The problem is that by the time this happens, It's already too late and the heat has dissipated into your tower, Resulting in other parts reaching their thermal limit. These parts in turn, Start to shut down.

Since this issue can often become semi-permanent, My first recommendation is to get a hold of a program like MSI Afterburner and monitor your temps and GPU usage, Both under idle and load. After intentionally causing a repeat of this "standby mode" open MSI Afterburner again and UNDERclock your card, ESPECIALLY the memory frequency, Whilst simultaneously bumping the fan speed up to, Say, 50-75%. (The reason I suggest this range, Is that it has been established that this is the optimal cooling range vs Fan speed. Anything above or below and you end up with a net heat gain, Under load.) If this generates stability and eliminates the problem you are having, Then it's simply a matter of purging any and every file even remotely relating to your drivers, Including PhysX, 3DVision, Etc.

I would recommend avoiding NVidia official drivers, Like the plague...The last half-decent driver produced by them was 196.21. Like their cards, EVERYTHING from NVidia has been going downhill, DRASTICALLY, Of late. (Hell, In REALWORLD benchmarks, The 480 can barely surpass a 5870 and thats not even factoring in the 5970 or dare I say it, The x2's!) Get a hold of the Cytosine drivers by Cell-Systems.

Windows 7 doesn't have any "old" drivers compared to Vista or XP I think the oldest versions you'll find is around the 181.xx range, and they are from uhm 2009 and they are for windows 7 beta.

I always avoid trying to use new OS versions on PCs used for gaming.  Shoot, for every day business, web surfing, correspondence, eMail, printing chores, etc.  I still use W2K because it's faster and less problematic than XP is.

Yes, I bought the $50 upgrade version while it was available; I'd tested the Betas and found it acceptable, which is not what happened for me with Vista, and I never bought any copy of that.  I do various things in it, but I don't NEED what it offers, so it mostly languishes.

Here's a novel trick -

Remove all Dispaly Drivers

Reboot

Open Control Panel - System - Device Manager - Display Adapters

Allow Win7 to search and install appropriate driver

After glitching and crashing through 3 Win7 installs using hardware mfg. support website drivers, I now avoid their help at all costs. The driver ver. # is identical, so I've assumed that the Nvidia driver installer causes problems. This is the method I use for all hardware drivers. Hope it works for you.
