This question has probably been asked before, but how do people get so much gold on dragon age?
I hear of people possesing many expensive items such as the rose's thorn, farsong and the felon's coat, how do people do this? and before it is too late for them to be of any real use?

Pick up EVERYTHING and sell it all.  Eventually, you get a lot

It's irritating because once I get them I have like a day before I can no longer use them.

Well, there are ways.

You can craft Potent Lyrium Potions and make as much cash as you'd like. There's a guide on the wiki, but it's pretty much buy the formula at Wonders of Thedas then go back and forth buying the materials and selling the potions between the Cicle Tower and the Gnawed Noble.

If that's dull or feels like an exploit, download as much official content as you like and use the DLC items to equip your party, with the extra cash going for the best stuff at the shops.

Personally I don't like buying the top tier equipment in shops; it breaks immersion for me. I use equipment my characters pick up from foes and only shop for crafting purposes. On the other hand, I have all of the official DLC and a few mods that add drops, so shopping sprees aren't that important in my games.

I  would download awakening in a second, if it wasn't so damn expensive.

Or you can use the console if you are playing on a PC. Just type "~", then "runscript zz_money x" with x being the amount of money you want. But if you're going to do that, you may as well go all the way and give yourself ph4t l3wts and l33t skillz.

If i can scrape together 60 gold from somewhere i could buy the rose's thorn, but I don't see how people can buy so much expensive stuff

I'm on xbox but even if I was on PC I would not consider using any of those console commands as it is in my opinion outright cheating.

I can gain all the best gear for the Warden before Landsmeet as a rule, but the party is generally assigned loot items only. I do use the Asunder exploit to gain 100 gold, but that is near the end of play; only Denerim remains, and is the only known exploit I utilize.

It is frustrating near the start to gather so little, but as I know the gold is available, no cheats or gold mods are required. Also, some Origins begin with more than others, and that can help quite a bit.

Herbalism skill. Get Morrigan's Herbalism skill up to Master (rank 4). She can hit that by level 10. Take her to Wonders of Thedas. Buy the Potent Lyrium Potion recipe. Go to the Mage's Tower. Buy as much Lyrium as you feel like. Go to the Gnawed Noble Tavern. Buy flasks, Distillation Agents, and Concentration Agents. Brew a batch of Potent Lyrium Potions. Sell them to the proprietor. Use the gold to buy more Flasks, DAs, and CAs. Keep going 'til you're out of Lyrium. Load up on Fs,DAs & CAs and take them to the Mages Tower, buy Lyrium, and repeat. Keep going until you have as much cash as you like. You'll need 30 or so gold to start.

No console commands, nothing outside of the vanilla game.

It's more fun (imo) to just make do with stuff you find, but you can buy anything you want that way.

There are some very profitable quests if you know what to do.

A Lord's Favor: Agree to fight in the Proving, and help Baizl get his love letters. Demand a reward. With enough Persuasion, you can get 15 gold.

Precious Metals: For 50 Gold (40 with a high Persuade skill), you buy a box of Lyrium. With enough Persuade and some blackmail, you can walk out with 98 Gold. Interestingly enough, the guy who gives you the quest has 20 Gold you can steal from him before talking to him to start the quest.

Chanter's Board, Mage's Collective, and Blackstone Irregulars: These quests give you a small amount of Gold every time you complete one. The more you do, the more they add up.

Crime Wave: Possibly the second most profitable quest line in the game. The Warden must have a point in Stealing to access it.

Keep an eye out for the side-quests, mainly, and you'll be swimming in cash.

Wardens Keep has a lot of good warrior gear, and Stone Prisoner DLC missions have really good rouge gear. Mages on the other hand.. only get good gear from Shops.

Not if you're an Arcane Warrior. Cailan's Armor, Spellweaver, and the Fade Wall don't come from any shops.

Yeah I've been really disappointed by the mage gear in the game. Stuff constantly drops for the other two classes but I'll wear the same gear forever before something better comes up (usually from a shop).

Wardens Keep has a Tier 7 staff that will go the distance until you can afford the best. Stone Prisoner has a fine belt, and one of the best helms in the game if you choose to wear it. Dog can fetch a fairly good staff for starting characters. As I usually select Aecane Warrior, there are plenty of free armors, and even Wade's Superior line is only a small fee (ie; 30 gold for three sets).

Key to the City is free, and a good ring for many. And while the best amulet, belt, and ring are store purchases, that is the same for all classes.

I cannot recall much of robes, but there are some found along the way which I commonly give to Morrigan until her final robes are ready. Same can be said for other accessories, gloves, headware, and boots.

If you want to be "in game legitimate" about it (which I smile upon) you can do the Lyrium smuggling quest with good persuasion to buy it 10 cheaper and sell it high to the mage and then pick up the 20 on the back end for returning to Dust-town with the news.  This requires, however, a 40 investment at the front.

Combine that with the stealing quests in Denerim and you should be able to pick up your Rose Thorn at least.

It also makes a difference to be shameless in demanding a reward from everyone you help. Most of my wardens have no problem with that - whatever it takes to defeat the Blight, right?

Max out your coersion. There's an extra 100 Gold in it. No need for exploits, money comes thick and fast just before the Landsmeet.

I'll second this. Even if the reward in question is an item you're not going to use, you can always sell it for cash. And you can never have enough cash. In fact, this strategy gets me a Tome of the Arcane Technique and a Backpack when I reach Party Camp for the first time. Since I started asking for a reward for everything, I generally walk into Party Camp with a grand total of about 33 Gold. It's proven to be very helpful.

Where does Coercion net you 100 Gold?

I'd never use the exploits or console commands. Unlimited gold spoils it imo. If you don't have any DLC you will definitely be missing out financially, but not so bad that it's crippling.

Pickpocketing can be very lucrative, but only if you're running a version or mod that doesn't leave you with a bugged system.

Don't buy any high price potions/poultices. If you have a mage with the heal spell, you should get by just fine on lesser potions/poultices and the better ones from drops/chests.

Be very choosy about what you buy. No sense in buying heavy chainmail or anything like that because you'll soon get better from drops/rewards.

Don't worry about buying the best gear for your companions. They'll do just fine with gear that you find along the way. Devoting the bulk of your money to just one character means you'll have more money than you could possibly need (my solo dwarf finished the game with 700 sovereigns!)

Speaking of dwarves, play as a dwarven noble! You can sell things to Gorim at double the price you'd get from other merchants. It makes a huge difference.
