It is fairly early on. How did so many people manage to save him?

If you chose not to recruit Garrus, then I'm fairly sure that you can still talk Wrex down through normal dialogue even if you didn;t get his family armor for him.

If you know where the armor is you can just go and get it, though, you don't necessarily need him to tell you about it.

NOT really necessary, you CAN just go to his planet. I usually TAKE Wrex with me, usually Wrex & Kaiden (or Ash if I am playing as a Sentinel, my favorite [esp in ME2 with WARP etc]).
