the way I saved Wrex is I did the Virmire mission last, made sure my charm was as high as it could go, would work with intimidate too and it should work. I never talked to anyone except Liara seeing I wanted the relationship with her and also did no ones loyalty mission, in Mass Effect 1 I'm sure you don't "have" to unlike Mass Effect 2 were it effects the end mission. I would've done the loyalty missions if it weren't for the fact that I was trying to zoom through Mass Effect 1 and 2 as quick as I could so I could play the 3rd...took me 8 hours for number one and 20 for the second....To say the least by the time I started playing number 3 I was effectively FRIED! I never let Wrex die - my favourite character overall in the entire ME saga. The easiest way to save him is to do his Family Armour quest before Virmire, which makes thing quite easy.

I could never let Wrex die...again that is...running with Wreav in ME and 3 just seemed so blan in comparison to having Wrex alive.

Virmire seems very end game-ish. The pace is definitely a lot faster than Feros or Noveria so I always save it for last too. I didn't know about the loyalty missions the first time I played cause I never knew talking to your crew members on the ship actually affected the game and I was still able to do it with paragon points after I had already completed Feros and Noveria. So if you're putting a lot of points into paragon or renegade you don't really need to do the family armor quest, but it helps.

Saved Wrex on my first playthough, didn't need my charm points because I'd already done his family armor assignment.

Now I'm doing my renegade/worst possible outcome playthough, and Wrex is going to die. My question is, can Wrex still be killed if you complete his family armor assignment, or are the Ashley kill him/kill him myself options only available if I haven't already helped him?

I kept him alive, simply because I wasn't aware that he could die. I had done his family mission so when the time came I was like "I don't need to go calm wrex down, he's fine.... oh wait. He's shooting at some rocks, I better go talk to him."

When I did talk to him I simply told him to man up and get his butt into gear. I was unaware had I not been careful someone might suddenly shoot him.

I believe that you need either 8 Charm or 8 Intimidate to make him back down.
To get it that high you should save Virmire till as late as possible and in previous missions choose only Renegade or Paragon options avoid taking a balance between the two and focus on one.

I took the road inbetween. I had max Charm and 8 Intimidate (the max I could have). You don't need to go down one road only in order to keep Wrex alive.

Virmire seems very end game-ish.

It was for me as I had
saved it for last. My thinking was that I would do the planets in the
order I was told about them. I also was enjoying doing a whole bunch of
side-quests. By the time I got to Vimire I had completed all but 1 of
the sidequests (that I was aware of) and I'd had enough by that point. So for me it was end-game.

If you do everything else in the game you could possibly do before heading to Virmire, then killing Wrex is harder to do than saving him. I mean, to me, he damn near begged to agree with you.

Here's the answer to my own question, if it's helpful for anyone else.

Yes, you can still kill Wrex, or have Ashley kill him even if you have completed his family armor assignment.

As soon as I get the family suit of armor quest I do it. Same with Garrus. I suffer from the mortal fear of forgetting their side quests. Like when I discovered that you can help Tali with her pilgrimage... I immediately looked up it's location and wrote it down and did it as soon as I could. I hate forgetting that stuff.

I read somewhere (tho the person could have been lying through their teeth mind you) that they managed to save Wrex with only 4 charm. *shrug* but maybe they did a pure paragon playthrough and had a lot more charm than what you can put into it with point.

I did virmire last on my first play through and had no problem saving Wrex. I never thought anything of it.
