Armed allies somewhere in the area?
One less target the next time you hit a pirate camp?
A four-shot reduction in your operational expenses for the mission?
A good reason to roll him over and put one dead center of his eyes to make sure?
Varren food?

I can do this all day.

I think the main issue that Batarians have is that they've come across Humanity - a species that is very similar to them in many respects (in terms of history, attitude, intentions, morphology) but superior to them in practically every way (physically, financially and militarily). They appear to feel they've essentially been replaced for a more effective model. Now, the species they once competed with has now ascended to the top echelons of power, and considered equal to the major political heavyweights in council space.

In some respects, someone who is like you, only better, elicits far more jealously then someone who is far beyond anything you could hope for, and I think we're seeing this here.

Like many of the 'enemies' in ME1, ME2 left me feeling some measure of sympathy for some batarians. I still think their government and power structure is a total joke, though. Ultimately, instead of trying to step up to the human's level, and compete, they just mess around in the arse-end of the galaxy whinging about how no-one likes them. Pathetic.

I vote for Batarian husks in ME3.

Particularly if you have a cultural prejudice that tells you every single member of their species is, by its very nature, dumber than your own species. A simply unavoidable, genetic, racist fact; they have two eyes, they're just not as smart as batarians.

Stuff 'em. A whole species I'm just waiting to give me a reason...

It's easier morally if they remain cannon fodder (Batarians are bad because they always point guns at us so we are encouraged to shoot them without remorse). Not so good for them though.

But his dreams, they aren't as empty... as his conscience seems to be...

Batarians, like humans, cannot all by be summed up in one word. Some people are bad; some people are good. It's a duality within every species.
Perhaps most Batarians are upset with the Council for ignoring their pleas to slow human expansion, but it doesn't make them all extremists.
I sympathize, if anything - and I'm a thin white guy.

Every single batarian you encounter over the course of two games could fit under "antagonistic".

Cathka wasn't an antagonist; he was a simple mechanic who loved his cigars.

In the literary sense he was an antagonist.  Every merc there was: they were all part of the group opposing the protagonist, Shepard, whether they were aware of that opposition or not. But no, he wasn't antagonistic in the colloquial sense.

He's as much an antagonist to Shepard as Oppenheimer is to everyone who has been nuked. You are right, though, he is a member of the blue suns, so, technically, he can be considered an antagonist.

Not to Godwin the thread, but think about **** Germany. The average German just knew what the government told them, and wasn't actually a bad person. But if you lived in one of the countries they invaded/fought, you probably hated all Germans, with darned good reason.

The batarians' plight reminds me a bit of the Native Americans during the 19th century. Of course, the key difference is that humans aren't pushing batarians off planets they've already colonized; they're just taking planets batarians felt they were entitled to.
