CD/DVD drive no longer reads ME2 discs

I was able to fully install Mass Effect 2 the first time around, but I realized I'd shot myself in the foot when I got a .dll error that was the result of not having the correct version of DirectX installed (and I realized there was an option to install it before installing the game, argh). I ended up downloading "DirectX End-User Runtime," which allowed the game to run but gave me somewhat choppy graphics. The game crashed on the "Lazarus Project" scene shortly after the Normandy goes down in the beginning of the story.

I thought that a fresh reinstall, along with installing DirectX from the disc, would be the way to go. I found however that after uninstalling the game my CD/DVD drive is not reading either of the discs, or any other disc at all for that matter. There are no errors, I just hear the drive make a sort of "speeding up" noise, after which it slows down and speeds up several times before going quiet. Opening the individual drives in My Computer shows nothing. I also went into the registry and got rid of the DirectX folder, in case that had been the cause (as I can always reinstall that as well), but it wasn't. The problem persists.

Is there any other information I can provide that would aid in solving my problem?

[many thanks in advance!]

Are U sure that there is nothing wrong with your dvd drives. Please check the dvd driver with other DVDs.

I just attempted again, and it seems that the drive will still not read any other disc (dvds included). The problem only occurred immediately after uninstalling the game.

[edit] I should also note that I'd attempted a system restore to yesterday, which did nothing to alleviate the problem.

Just seems to me like your CD/DVD drive is buggered, so you will just have to replace it, unless someone else posts something much quicker to do of course, oh and before replacing it if you do, try using it on another pc first to see if it works on there.

It appears the problem doesn't necessarily indicate that a disc drive is, well, broken. I found out that the problem isn't all that rare either, and there's a resource I found via Microsoft's Support site that's supposed to fix these types of problems: http://support.micro..._drive_problems

I found that through another forum.. I'm in the middle of installing SP3 for XP, as that is a requirement for the resource to run. If this does not solve the problem, my next step will be to follow your advice, somejah. I at least hope that when a fix is found it will help others experiencing the same issue.

Windows is not a good indicator the drives functionality. Windows only talks to the board to find out what it is, it doesnt perform intergrity tests on the hardware. If you are getting the spin up noise, then the motor seems fine, its just the laser is having problems.

It could be something as simple as a dirty lens, which can be taken care of by using a cd cleaning kit in your drive, or it could be the laser itself has gone, meaning replacement necesary.

Well, strangely enough (and I feel bad for not having tried this right off the bat) rebooting with the disc in the drive got the computer to recognize it, and the installation of both DirectX and the game itself went smoothly, disc swap-over and all. Plays great now as well, which means I just had the wrong version of DirectX installed previously. I'm still not sure why the drive had stopped working on the first uninstall, but it's on the up and up now...

I should have followed up this morning, but I played a healthy 13 hour round today and couldn't find it in me to do anything else. ;)

Good to see you solved the problem without having to replace the disc drive.
