When you choose assault rifle as the bonus weapon on a non-soldier class, which combination of SMG and Assault rifle do you end up using? they're both very similar weapons, so which ones do you take and why?

I fins that taking the vindicator means that the tempest becomes a bit of a better secondary option than the locust (larger magazine, more powerful at short range) as the vindicator can handle long range better.

over to you

I agree with your reasoning, op.

I love the Vindicator. I love the Tempest. I really love how they work together.

Your reasoning is sound, OP. Any other AR plays similar to an SMG so you're essentially lugging around two SMGs, not a bad thing but the Vindicator plays very differently and depending on class it offers a better place in the battlefield, ala farther away from the enemies.

The tempest is nice but its rate of fire is only of use up really close, keeping her steady is a real trial, you're lucky to land half a clip into someones head unless you're using Adrenalin.

I used to take it along with me to strip shields and rely on the Vindicator for biotics and armor but eventually that becomes pointless with AR upgrades. Late in the game I still find SMGs become redundant if I've got AR upgrades, not to mention ammo powers.

I kind of wish the default auto pistol, and AR where of more use comparatively. We're hurting for weapon choice enough as it is, without relegating them to 'training mission only' weapons.

I actually like the Tempest a lot.

The Locust is good enough that my weapon training is usually spent on either a sniper rifle (Long Range) or shotgun (Short Range). Depends on your play style obviously, but the Locust makes assault rifles redundant.

When I see people talk about how great the Assault Rifle is, usually the terms "Soldier class" and "Revenant" come up. Which is fine and all, but they're the only class that has that option without modding, so that's not going to help anyone talking about how great it is. Unless you're trying to convince everyone to cast aside their biotic/tech bonds and find the glory of the Soldier.

The Locust/Tempest works rather well for me at medium range and does even better for me at short range. Though I suppose a shotgun would still be better as it can get the job done with a single shot versus unloading an entire clip of an SMG. So the only thing I find wanting is long range, leading to the sniper rifle. Works particularly well if you lean heavily to a caster-oriented playstyle. Or maybe that's just the deep-rooted Infiltrator in me that never lets go even when I'm playing an Adept.

I use the vindicator and tempest. The tempest with Zaeed's squad disruptor ammo for blue suns and geth. I use the vindicator for everything else. It is a head shot machine at medium range (and once you get three upgrades it is fairly acurate for head shots even at long range.

I found much more love for the AR by playing an adept. As an adept, the SMG's just weren't cutting it for me with their small clip sizes and high rate of fire. They're great for single target focus, but I use guns on my adept to strip shields and armour from groups. Drop a singularity and spray anyone near it. This is love.

Killing one at a time is for soldiers and infiltrators, engineers and vanguards and most sentinels (some luck out on warp explosion kills, hooray you killed two at once!). Adepts can do mickey mouse proud. 7 in one blow!

For Adepts I use Viper/Locust

For Vanguards Viper/Tempest

Soldiers get Revenant and I don't care what else

Haven't gotten Sentinel and Engineers far enough to choose yet, I just can't it seems.

Call me crazy, but I thought only soldiers got Adrenaline Rush. And soldiers don't use SMGs.

Yeah I only tend to choose AR's because:
I hate zoomcasting, it sucks (so no snipers for my adepts, engineers or sentinels)
the shotgun is only useful at a range where an SMG can already take care of the problem

I dislike the Vindicator and how it feels, and I prefer the Collector Rifle and GPR, I'm rather dissatisfied with the choices you have, but I picked GPR/Shuriken.

However, my usual gettup with AR's is the Geth Pulse Rifle with the Locust to make up for damage lost, or Collector Assault Rifle with..the Locust because it's pretty good.
