Both ME1 and ME2 work fine on my system.  The problem is that recently I played through ME1 again to start a new character.  I finished ME1 with this new character thinking that I could simply upload it into ME2.  However, upon staring ME2 the game does not recognise this ME1 character.

My guess is that a player only gets one opportunity to upload saves from ME1, when ME2 is newly installed.  Can anybody confirm this?  And if this is so, do I need to reinstall ME2 in order to upload this ME1 character?

You have to run the Configuration utility. When you start the game, don't hit Play. Instead, choose Configure. When the utility comes up, click on the Save Games tab. Click the 'Copy Mass Effect 1 Save Games' button. Navigate to the ME1 save folder in the popup window. For XP that's My Documents-> BioWare -> Mass Effect -> Save (I don't know where Vista or 7 puts it). Choose the Save folder and click on Okay. Nothing will seem to happen, but that will import it to your ME2 game. Fire up the game, hit Play, and you should be able to choose your old character.

wow wish i saw this before i gave up and made a new character and uninstalled ME1

This does not work in Windows 7. I even copied the games manually to ME1 and it somehow still can't see them.

The problem seems to be that I do not have a char_******* format file. I do however have a "Profile.MassEffectProfile" format file. Can I not import this? If I don't have a char_ file, do I have to reinstall ME1 and finish it again?
