Hey folks, just wanted a bit of help deciding on what type of class I should play for the best "Archer type" experience in DA:O.  I've played the D&D archer classes ever since I can remember and they all kicked major **** and were blasts to play in NWN, NWN2, Baldurs Gate, you name it.

I've looked at both the warrior and rogue trees, and I can't decide on which one I will play to focus on archery skills.
I know the rogues get more talents and skillz, but the extra stamina and hitpoints might help if I have to melee to save my life.

Post some of your thoughts if your brain hasn't already been turned to mush on these forums like mine has.  Posted Image

Warrior is more durable, with better access to heavy armor should you grab that skill and they will last longer in melee (but there is an archery skill that lets you fire in melee without penalties.)

Rogue is more dodgey and hits harder. If the assassin skills stack that would be amazing.

Since you are going the ranged route I assume you already have your tanky types doing their job so I would suggest rogue because of the dex.

Rogues get the same number of talents as a warrior, not more. It's hard to know without having played the game. I think it will depend on how the AI aggresion algorithms work. If they tend to rush the first thing that hits them (ie the archer) Warriors might be better.

Yeah, I've been getting conflicting evidence, so I'm not sure what to believe. Thanks for the input guys. So far, the Rogue is winning.

Go rogue.

As soon as you start making concessions, picking classes with more hitpoints 'just in case,' you'll eventually find it's just easier to equip your sword. If you pick rogue you'll find that your choice to go archer is more reinforced by the game.

Warriors start off able to put points into any of the weapon talents, unlike the rogue (who must put points into the Combat Training Skill) so this may be of some value unless the backstab for rogue can be applied to his missile weapon I would think that could be the overriding factor.

I would wager a warrior + single target archery tree + templar specialization would make one mean mage killing machine.

warriors have bravery and deathblow bravery will increase your mental resist and something else so you wont be stunned by some spell or frozen and deathblow gives you back stamina when you kill someone so you can do more arrow specials attacks/also precise striking may be applied to arrows.
also perfect striking with arrow of slaying sounds like one big damaging move.

Can't Rogues go Ranger for Specialization?

Rangers aren't archer specialists. They are animal/trap/herb peeps. They don't have any advantage in archery over a normal rogue.

Keep in mind that if you do pick warrior, make sure its a Dalish elf. They start with on skill already in the archery tree, allowing them to better optimize the build. (You get to spend a point you would have spent in the archery tree elsewhere)

Wow, thanks for all the advice! Lots of good points to consider. Arttis, Dennis, and Servant make some very valid warrior arguments!

Still so very torn! I guess I'll have to just play both, and find out which style I am more into.

A lot depends on how you want your party set up. Going with a warrior would lead to a 2 warrior one mage party whereas a rogue would allow you to switch between 2 mages and 2 warriors easier.

I'll be going Dwarven Noble rogue for the first time through, going archer too.. simply because it looks like i can spend more talents on "fun" things and utility things rather than being a pure combatant.

Come on leave that junk to your other characters....be a warrior...be superior in a fight...
Reaver also may let you add health to your character when you kill something and increase damage at the cost of health combien with many other moves...could equal to a lot.Berserker im sure has some nice damamge increasing moves...champion for buffs....templar you know...

Thanks for all your help folks, I've made my decision to be Daelish Elf Rogue for my archer.
I think setting a trap down, and killing stuff before it gets to me far superior to having to get my hands dirty. Posted Image
I'll leave that to the smelly Warriors that shout profanities.

Besides, I can always go into the dual weilding tree and start backstabbing with all the Evasion/Dodge talents available for the rogue.   You can't hit what you can't catch!   Posted Image

-End

A wise choice, if I do say so myself.

You can set traps as a warrior and shoot a bow....or crossbow....
