Ok, so the burning star that you see when talking to The Illusive Man, has to be of some significance besides turning blue or red...

If you have seen The Fifth Element, you'll know where I'm going with this...

So heres my theory, what if that burning star IS the mastermind behind it all, as far as Cerberus goes. That burning star might actually be an intelligent type life form communicating to TIM just as Sovereign to Saren, and Harbinger to the collectors.

If you think that idea is absurd, then please, watch this video.

Oh really, damn. Well its a good conversation starter for sure. To me it just makes sense after putting it all together. Until Mass Effect 3 is announced, that is my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

Seeng that your scars heal if you are paragon and your face falls apart if you are renegade (sorry, but I don't accept Chakwas' mind over matter explanation), why would you assume such a complex thing with awesome ideas behind it?

I think this is just another "Boohoo, I want a halo over my head or horns to show my alignment!" thing. Done by wizards.

But why does the Illusive Man always star at a damn star all the time? Has to be a reason behind it

He stared at the sun all the time, and that's why they must've replace his eyes. Now he can do it all he wants.

What if there's a Reaper trapped inside the star?

Or it is galaxy's biggest disco ball. And TiM can switch it's color by pressing a button, according to his mood at the moment.

Who cares? TIM could be the star itself for all we know. The guy is just ridiculously mysterious.

I kind of have this wierd theory so bare with me a bit. I am guessing that he is a Prothean and he along with a few others somehow survived the Reapers attack on the galaxy 50,000 years ago and somehow stayed alive whether it be they can live that long or found a away. While the Reapers were attacking they got as much data on them as they could so once they went into highing they began to work on an anti Reaper. An anti Reaper would be able to destroy a Reaper so making an army would be able to save the galaxy, but after they finished 1 they were still missing something. Whatever they needed was beyond the omega 4 relay but they could not go through and come out alive. So they hid the anti Reaper within the burning star so no one could find it. Either the other members died or are doing something else but the Illusive Man guards the anti Reaper by always watching the burning star. Once he heard about Shepard he than decides to use him/her to get what he wants which is why he wants Shepard to keep the base intact.

I hate to say it...but this is the only end-theory I would put money against.

Maybe if TIM wasn't a Prothean it wouldn't be as far-fetched a theory.

In all honesty I think it is an aesthetic thing. Nothing more.

I'm guessing it is just symbolism for Sheppard's final decision.  The color is churning a bubbling throughout the entire game, but at the end it changes into a solid color.

destroy the base = blue, save the base = red.

So, I agree with Khayness, it is just a way to show your alignment.

As to why?  Maybe the Illusive Man likes the backdrop.   Or, maybe he has a chip planted in Sheppard's head that reflects his alignment to a giant animated star behind him... just for kicks.  See, it wasn't rebuilding Shep that cost so much, it was the darn disco star-ball!

I'm willing to believe the sun behind the Illusive Man is tied to Shepard in more ways than we're told it is.

Mass Effect is really taking place inside the Matrix and Shepard is The One. Happy Shepard makes the sun turn blue. Angry Shepard makes it turn red.

Behind the Illusive Man is a dieing star. This is key point in Mass Effect 3 where you will find the Illusive Man. The Illusive man is on a space station that circles the star. For the color of it, I do not know. **These facts are from the people that make the game and are not made up from my mind** I do like the answers above.

He looks at the star as a person looks out the windows of a skyscraper. The star is a sight to see and is a rare thing to see also, even though the galaxy is so huge. TIM is in love with the sight,
