When I was a child I played mostly side scrollers. I think the first RPG I played was actually Final Fantasy IV(then known as Final Fantasy II).

Lunar for the Sega CD was the first RPG I played that I really really loved.

A LOT of these I don't know if I'd even classify as RPGs. Some of them are more action or adventure games with RPG elements.

I didn't play PnP D&D or the like when I was a kid.. I preferred actual video games. Figured I used PnP enough in school, why do it while playing a game? lol

I dated a fella that had Baldurs Gate so i started playing it, I had no understanding of the D&D system of abilities or scalign or anything, but I began to love that game so much, I played every type and race of character i could make, I totally got into rpg at that moment. I do not consider Diablo or Hexen as role playing, they were in truth my first ever pc games, but not an rpg i think>?

I didn't read anything in the op's post that implied that hybrids were off-limits, so that's why I went with zelda (nes), which is considered to be an action/adventure/role-playing game. After that though, it probably would have been "Little Ninja Brothers" (NES), which is an action/rpg.

I consider Diablo an RPG because it holds many MANY of the same elements as any other RPG. Zelda, however is borderline imo.. That is about the only one I've noticed in this thread that I, personally, would consider more an action/adventure game rather than an RPG.

I don't count Zelda, but if anyone else does you could say it was the Legend of Zelda. Or Metroid first for that matter, seeing as both games were similar except Zelda was overhead and Metroid was a side scroller. My first traditional RPG was Final Fantasy II (IV in Japan.) The first CRPG I played was Fallout. I bought Baldur's Gate Gold and it came bundled in the same box. I ended up playing the heck out of Fallout first since at the time it was such a novelty from the fantasy RPGs I was used to.

DnD: Tower of Doom in the Arcade. course, i didn't understand why it would say things like "you have reached 10th level" at the time (i was 9 or 10) and it was pretty much just a fancy beat-em-up anyway.

Fallout 1 was my first PC RPG, which came out when i was 12, but i didn't play it until i was 16.

My first RPG was Quest 64. My first RPG on a computer (and 2nd RPG overall) was Baldur's Gate 2.

Well Zac McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders is an adventure game, but I consider it as my first RPG.

God, how many quarters did I waste on that cabinet when they had it down at the local 7-Eleven during summer vacation with a Wild Cherry Super Slurpee at my side?

I remember being 13 years old and thinking the Elf was smokin' hot with that butt-length medieval miniskirt.

Zelda is a Action-adventure with RPG elements. Also Zelda 2 was a RPG, just putting that there.

First RPG was a D&D campaign in college, although the rules were extremely home grown.

First Computer RPG of any note was DA:O. Unless you count Puzzle Pirates.

Hmm, the first one I ever played was the Super Mario RPG that my sister owned. The first RPG that I loved was Final Fantasy X, so I played the before ones, making me love Final Fantasy VI more than X.

Mine was "Stonekeep". Amazing game for its time and it sucks that I can't get it to work on modern PCs. It had elves and dwarves and all that jazz, which I thought of as funny back then. It also had secret areas, which were hidden behind walkable walls. Boy, when I first discovered one, I went through the whole game bumbing on every wall. No walkthroughs back then...

If you manage to find this game and make it work, it's worth a try, assuming you can ignore the early '90s graphics.
