See, Loghain was right - Orlesian are scum!

And Dalish are pickpockets, I know I know.  Posted Image  You would think Mistress Woolsey could cough up a few coppers here or there, but nooooo.  We'll have to see if she can even scrape together the cash for Voldrik.  Probably once we get into the better lootz.

On happier news, if you click on Nate in the Wending Wood, he says "I love the outdoors."  That ought to make Orlesian Dalish girl happy.

More picspam incoming.

The interaction with Nate about the portrait is so sad.  It's kind of a puzzle why we like him so much, isn't it?  It's like they made him to be dark and broody and not outright good looking, and  so much of what he says is bitter.  It's the vulnerable glimpses that offset it. So much about his family is harsh, but he turns very fond and warm when talking about or to the servants like Adria and Samuel.  At least he seems to have had a good relationship with Delilah.

Nathaniel's Joining

Posted Image

So I bet we find out in DA2 where he learned to be an assassin/ poison expert.

Something else I noticed on this pt, the codex on his grandfather says that Tarleton turned for the Orlesians and hanged for it, while Rendon turned the Howes to the rebels and became a hero as a result.  Ironic, isn't it?

Is it his maternal grandfather, then, that became a Warden and died at his Joining??

I was wondering that awhile back. I don't think it could be because it has the Howe family crest on it so unless his parents were that closely related...The codex says that Tarleton was Rendon's father so perhaps the grandfather that Nathaniel speaks of is his great-grandfather? He never met him personally but heard about him from his own father?

It's because he's not classically handsome, and has a bit of darkness to him that I like him. (Same as I like Loghain, actually. I'm a sucker for the dark hair/blue eyes/hawk nose combo so both these chaps tick my boxes, so to speak). I find Alistair's looks too clean cut and bland for my tastes, and whilst he's funny and charming, he's definitely friend zone material for me. Gah I wish Nate had a romance. *grumble*

Nate could not be a classic pretty boy because Rendon sure wasn't a hottie, and we know from Nate's comment about the portrait "she wasn't that pretty" (which is especially ironic since the portrait is pretty ugly- hurrah for dark humor) that his mother wasn't a blushing beauty, either.

For me, at least, Nate has some of the same appeal as Alistair, not in looks but in which heart strings get pulled.  A while back Gaider said somewhere on the forums that Alistair was written as a woobie, someone you want to hug so it will be all better.  There is some of that in Nate as well, because of all he's lost and because his childhood sounds like it was pretty rough.  Plus running around Vigil's Keep, I keep thinking of him as a boy climbing up turrets or building tree forts and then.. I have to say I've never felt any urge to hug Alistair. I guess it's something to do with playing a Cousland on my first ever run, where Alistair spends quite a lot of time mourning a man he's known six months but manages to forget your entire family was murdered until you point it out to him. My attitude is more "suck it up, kid - I've had worse."

Nate seemd to deal with his pain a little better. I also find the idea that he wants to kill the Warden deliciously spicy.

To each his own. Who knows why certain characters appeal? Alistair provokes d'aww and funny and "omg hot" in equal and confusing measure, sometimes in the same dialogue. And even though Nate is my Awakening crush, it is hard to full on fangirl for him, for me at least, simply because we're not given enough of his story or enough conversations. I hope we get rich story about him in DA2 and not just a small cameo thrown in for marketing appeal. It will still not make up for the fact that he talks to Oghren and Anders more than he'll talk to my Warden. [/ Awakening rant]

I get the funny from Alistair but not the other two. (Well, I guess he *is* handsome - just not my type).

And yeah, I would love to speak to Nate more in Awakening. I don't mind him talking to Oghren and Anders but it ticks me off when he gets all "m'lady" on frickin' Velanna. Gah!

I think Bioware are big teases - they gives us enough information about Nate and Anders to keep us intriuged but that's it.

*shakes fist* Curse you Bioware. Here's hoping there's a payoff for it somewhere down the line.

Haven't had Velanna in the party long enough to get those banters.  Hmm.  I was gonna kill her this time around, but I'm kind of curious.

Possible he's talking about his great-grandfather. My great-grandmother is still alive and I know my cousins and myself just call her "Grandma".

Sooo, I didn't kill Velanna outright and she ran off.  I take it she's going to appear again somewhere?

She does make it really hard to want to save her, admitting outright that she killed the merchants for revenge and to show how badass elven she is.  Posted Image

I set her free once and while she doesn't get a second chance to be recruited, you get to read about her continued "adventures" in the epilogue slides.

What happens? More killing?

*spoilers below*

Epilogue slide reads:

But Velanna had remained in the Wending Wood to search, unsuccessfully, for her sister. She considered the wood her territory and summoned sylvans to frighten the merchants. The traders soon abandoned the Pilgrim's Path and found a different route to Denerim--longer, but much less dangerous.

*end spoilers*

IMO not really a satisfying ending considering what she had done.

Edit: Back to Nate...
I love this picture, Addai67. They look really cute together with matching amrour.

Thank you!  I thought the composition came out well.  She's wearing Battledress of the Provocateur.  I hate mage robes.  Anyway, she's Orlesian so it fits.  Posted Image

Not sure if this has been posted in here yet, but I think it's my favorite Nate art ever.  MaevesChild's "Let me love you":

Oh, and that Velanna slide is Posted Image.  I might have to go back.  One bummer is that if you kill her, her corpse is apparently unlootable?  Not fair.

Man, my Dalish mage PC from Origins would personally go kick V's ass back to the Creators.  Posted Image

I love alll of MaevesChild's artwork of Nate. The story that accompanies that picture is also very entertaining (if she would update! Grrrr.=])

Huh, that's strange. I never actually tried to kill her but you would think you could get something from it. Maybe it's Bioware hinting they don't want her dead?

Ha! I would pay to see that. On that subject it felt out-of-character the way Velanna talks to you at first when playing an imported Dalish Elf. She sounds angry yet polite. It's weird.

I'm not very good at taking hints Posted Image.  Wynne's body isn't lootable either - not sure she'd have any good loot anyway.

AC - looks like him to me!

On my current Origins playthrough I am valiantly resisting the urge to mod Nate's head in somewhere.  I wonder which npc would look best with Nate's head....Bann Teagan?
