I was wondering that awhile back. I don't think it could be because it has the Howe family crest on it so unless his parents were that closely related...The codex says that Tarleton was Rendon's father so perhaps the grandfather that Nathaniel speaks of is his great-grandfather? He never met him personally but heard about him from his own father?Addai67 wrote...
Nathaniel's Joining
So I bet we find out in DA2 where he learned to be an assassin/ poison expert.
Something else I noticed on this pt, the codex on his grandfather says that Tarleton turned for the Orlesians and hanged for it, while Rendon turned the Howes to the rebels and became a hero as a result. Ironic, isn't it?
Is it his maternal grandfather, then, that became a Warden and died at his Joining??

Nate could not be a classic pretty boy because Rendon sure wasn't a hottie, and we know from Nate's comment about the portrait "she wasn't that pretty" (which is especially ironic since the portrait is pretty ugly- hurrah for dark humor) that his mother wasn't a blushing beauty, either.CalJones wrote...
It's because he's not classically handsome, and has a bit of darkness to him that I like him. (Same as I like Loghain, actually. I'm a sucker for the dark hair/blue eyes/hawk nose combo so both these chaps tick my boxes, so to speak). I find Alistair's looks too clean cut and bland for my tastes, and whilst he's funny and charming, he's definitely friend zone material for me. Gah I wish Nate had a romance. *grumble*

Haven't had Velanna in the party long enough to get those banters. Hmm. I was gonna kill her this time around, but I'm kind of curious.CalJones wrote...
I get the funny from Alistair but not the other two. (Well, I guess he *is* handsome - just not my type).
And yeah, I would love to speak to Nate more in Awakening. I don't mind him talking to Oghren and Anders but it ticks me off when he gets all "m'lady" on frickin' Velanna. Gah!

I set her free once and while she doesn't get a second chance to be recruited, you get to read about her continued "adventures" in the epilogue slides.Addai67 wrote...
Sooo, I didn't kill Velanna outright and she ran off. I take it she's going to appear again somewhere?

But Velanna had remained in the Wending Wood to search, unsuccessfully, for her sister. She considered the wood her territory and summoned sylvans to frighten the merchants. The traders soon abandoned the Pilgrim's Path and found a different route to Denerim--longer, but much less dangerous.

Thank you! I thought the composition came out well. She's wearing Battledress of the Provocateur. I hate mage robes. Anyway, she's Orlesian so it fits.A71C3 wrote...
Edit: Back to Nate...
I love this picture, Addai67. They look really cute together with matching amrour.
Huh, that's strange. I never actually tried to kill her but you would think you could get something from it. Maybe it's Bioware hinting they don't want her dead?Addai67 wrote...
One bummer is that if you kill her, her corpse is apparently unlootable? Not fair.
Ha! I would pay to see that. On that subject it felt out-of-character the way Velanna talks to you at first when playing an imported Dalish Elf. She sounds angry yet polite. It's weird.Addai67 wrote...
Man, my Dalish mage PC from Origins would personally go kick V's ass back to the Creators.

I love alll of MaevesChild's artwork of Nate. The story that accompanies that picture is also very entertaining (if she would update! Grrrr.)
