I have trouble not romancing Alistair on ANY female PC i have. He has so many triggers for the romance and some of them aren't obvious.  I learned long ago to just enjoy the ride.  You don't have to make your FCousland queen.  I plan on my next run through to romance Ser Gilmore on my Cousland.  (If I can keep my pixil paws off AListair long enough).

Haha,I do agree it's a little difficult not to romance Alistair (even by accident) with the amount of romance triggers.

My last run through i actually contemplated leaving Anora on the throne and just being GWs with my Cousland and Al.  Then I heard that hideous speech and my head exploded...Plus I remembered he only would show up in Awakenings if I made him king.

It's hard not to romance Alistair so I like to think Nat and Cousland get together on the games where Ali and her break up. And after seeing her so happy with Nate, seeing how they overcame the reasons they shouldn't be together, he regrets his decisions.



If they could overcome something so dark then maybe he and Cousland can overcome their own problems of being together. He tries to woo her back and nearly wins her back but then she slaps him, even though there's still some emotional baggage she has moved on. And he watches her walk away.



Then she seeks comfort in Nate's arms.



Alistair definitly has to be involved somehow in the whole Nate/Cousland thing. Makes it more interesting.

A properly done Nate/Cousland romance should be interesting enough, adding Alistair pining over Miss So-awesome-no-one-can-ever-forget-her somehow just dimishes it. I prefer to think that if they break up they break up and move on ... both of them.

Alistair is the friggin' king, he broke up with her for the sake of the country. Why would he change his opinion now? Why should he pine endlessly over his ex-girlfriend? He's busy ruling a country. Real people would act awkward, a bit of irrational jealousy might be involved, but Alistair is not the type to try to get Cousland to break up with someone she's just fallen in love with. 

Edit:  Thinking about it I'd really love to read a Howe/Cousland fic that concentrates on their relationship and how it evolves - preferably without making Alistair look like an idiot.

I think maybe a harden Alistair will be more likely to try to get the girl back.  You can convince him to keep the relationship going so I don't see it too much of a stretch to see him try to get the girl back.  Maybe he hasn't found the right woman to procreate with and she comes along and is a nice distraction from his duties.

Maybe a soften Alistair will leave them alone...but that be no fun lol.

Edit - I see Alistair's involvement as a tool to strengthen Nate's and Cousland's relationship.

Alistair's involvement doesn't necessarily have to portray him as a beaten puppy who would do anything to get his girl back because she is Queen Perfect Awesomesauce.  He breaks up with her for the good of the country, it doesn't mean he stops loving her, nor does she stop loving him.  There are still feelings there on both sides, and Cousland could start to develop feelings for Nathaniel while still being in lvoe with Alistair.

See I can't really see Alistair getting all up in the PC's face if they broke off their relationship prior to the Ending Battle. He really has no say anymore in who she sees and frankly if he is king, he has a lot more important things to do than worry about his former girl friend's taste in men.

A Queen Cousland (if they marry for love) shouldn't be messing around behind Alistair's back anyway. Sexual tension or not, to have her jump Nate's bones makes her come off as ****ty/unsympathetic. And if you make Alistair a cuckold/tool to justify the attraction it comes off as the worst kind of OOC crap I hate to read from FFs.

So the best FF IMO that would come from this would be PC is free agent (even if she and Al had shared feelings in the past). She has enough issues with the whole "your daddy killed my daddy" and vice versa with Nate to fill up a few chapters of a fic.

Why retread angst and repackage as something new? Go in a new direction. What about the whole "WC with Subordinate Warden" angle. Or exploring the discovery that Nate isn't the douche his dad was (even if PC's original inclination was to hang the poor bastard). Or help him deal with some of his issues with the past (PC had a warm and loving family as opposed to the hell that Nate went through as a kid).

There are plenty of story elements there without going for the old boyfriend is jealous or adultery angle.

I always wondered what Fergus would think of Howe. Funny though, I completely almost forgot this little detail for my own story which starts with Fergus and Nate planning things and stuff.

Especially since Oghren makes a comment about Fergus saying Nate wouldn't have the stones to show up in Ferelden again.  And he's been stripped of title, so she'd be dallying with a commoner.  Though a Warden Cousland is already out of the family succession.

I've only just remembered now that Nate says 'Does this please you?' when he unlocks chests and doors.I'll ask this again.Why in the name of all that is good and honourable was he not romanceable?

I feel really sorry for the poor guy.I know a lot of people who played the HN origin just went ahead and had him hanged due to what his Dad did,but they're really missing out on a really well written character.
