My prompt answer.
Riding on the bus always results in inspiration. I wonder if I took a 30 day bus tour if I could write a novel? Oh, apologies for Anders' dialogue but I couldn't remember exactly what he said... I'm not sure the end actually make sense, but eh, it sounds good if you say it in Nate's voice...hmm, Nate's voice.

"Do we have an agreement?" Bann Esmerelle waited with a nervousness she tried not to show, while the younger Howe considered her offer. Arms crossed he looked her over, then looked across the room at the current warden commander. "We know you were, tricked, into joining the wardens."
"You know that, do you?"
Taking encouragement from his neutral tone, she nodded. "Yes. Our source tells us you want revenge on them for killing your father. We'd like to help with that."
"That's, kind, of you."
"In return all we ask is that you give us back the lands and other gifts your father bestowed on us. They're rightfully ours."
"That's all?"
"Once you're in your rightful place you may feel we deserve more." The small smile that lightened his expression encouraged her even more. "An agreement?"
"A gentlemen's agreement?" Nate stood still and watched the Bann walk across the room. She was stopped by the new commander and one of the nobles. After making sure she was deep in conversation, he walked slowly along the side of the hall. "Anders?"
"Hmm?" Happy to be distracted from his unsuccessful attempts to catch the attention of one of the only pretty girls in the room, Anders glanced at Howe. "Nathaniel."
"Ser Tamra seems to have something to say to the Commander. Perhaps you might tell her?" Nate's opinion of the mage's intelligence was confirmed when he didn't question, just nodded quickly.
"Will do."
"Good man." Continuing down the room he turned and walked back to his former place. That cursed portrait was staring at him. At least it seemed a bit friendlier now. Made him wish he was still young enough to poke his tongue out at it. Showing it his back, he stood watching the activity in the room.
Anders caught the Commander's attention. That was one pretty girl who noticed him. Once she'd freed herself from the nobles and had approached him, he smiled winningly. "Its good to be Arl." When she didn't smile he sighed. "You might want to speak to Ser Tamra over there, I hear she has something to tell you."
"Thank you." Lilibeth nodded and moved off to speak to Ser Tamra.
Anders looked over at Howe and nodded. He was given a quick nod in return. Once this hall was empty he'd find out what was going on, but for now both Howe and the Commander owed him a favour. Not bad for a boring evening in the Vigil Hall watching nobles try to outdo each other in pompousness.
. . .
"Ooh, conspiracies, I love them." Anders grinned when Howe sighed. "No really, they're fun."
"Your idea of fun is strange, Anders." Nate wasn't really annoyed, the mage had done as he'd asked, quickly and without letting the Commander know who'd told him. "This conspiracy is determined to kill the Commander and give me the Arling."
"Seems an odd goal. Why not just kill the Commander and give themselves the Arling?"
"Giving it to me grants them an air of respectability. Nothing says 'we're doing this for the good of the people' more than reinstating a former owner." Nate sighed again when Anders leaned back and looked startled. "What now?"
"I think that's the longest sentence I've ever heard you say." He was impressed when Howe merely sighed again. "If it wouldn't be rude, a question?"
"Ask."
"Why don't you join in with them? You did come to kill the Wardens, yes? Seems a quick way to accomplish your goal."
"Their goals are financially motivated. I find that offensive." Nate really didn't care if he sounded stuffy and pompous, it was the truth. "Revenge for a wrong done is one thing, this is just, petty. That aside, I'm a warden now Anders, that makes us brothers. I don't conspire against my brothers."
Anders thought about that. "You know Howe, I wasn't sure before, but now I've decided. You're alright."
"I'm so relieved." Nate smiled when Anders clapped him on the shoulder. "Shall we agree the Commander doesn't need to know about this?"
"Agreed. We'll steer her in the right direction and stop this before it gets dangerous."
. . .
"The Dark Wolf seems the best option. If you don't mind me saying?" Anders tried his best innocent expression when the Commander lifted an eyebrow at him. "Might be able to nip it in the bud before it gets too out of hand."
Lilibeth nodded. "That does seem sensible. So unlike you Anders." She grinned when he looked offended. "What say you Nathaniel?"
"I agree." Nate waited a beat. "Anders is rarely sensible." He very much enjoyed the combination of Anders' outrage and Lilibeth's laugh. "The Dark Wolf. Much the best option."
It turned out they were right. The Dark Wolf, after a hefty payment, sent them to a place called Old Stark's Farm, where they handily dispatched the conspirators and a handful of assassins.
"That should nip things in the bud, no?" Lilibeth leaned on her staff and surveyed the dead bodies. "Nicely done my wardens."
"Thank you ser, a pleasure." Anders bowed. "A hot meal would round the day off nicely."
"Nathaniel?"
"A meal would be nice." Letting them walk slightly ahead, he paused to search one of the bodies. Finding what he wanted he stood and followed them down the path.
. . .
"We had an agreement!" Bann Esmerelle hissed at Howe, keeping her voice as low as she could. "Is this how you honour your agreements?"
"An agreement?" Nate pulled out the item he'd taken off Liza Packton and held it out for her to see. "I found this on Liza Packton. I'll keep it I think."
"A letter?" It didn't take much imagination to know what was in it.
"A letter." He tucked it way again. "As to our agreement, I believe I specified a gentlemen's agreement? I'm not a gentleman, but a nobleman and you're, neither. So, we agreed on nothing. Did we?"
