My prompt for this week:

Agreement.

My Anders prompt was a spectatular failure so hopefully this one fares better.

My prompt answer.

Riding on the bus always results in inspiration. I wonder if I took a 30 day bus tour if I could write a novel? Oh, apologies for Anders' dialogue but I couldn't remember exactly what he said... I'm not sure the end actually make sense, but eh, it sounds good if you say it in Nate's voice...hmm, Nate's voice.

...........................

"Do we have an agreement?" Bann Esmerelle waited with a nervousness she tried not to show, while the younger Howe considered her offer. Arms crossed he looked her over, then looked across the room at the current warden commander. "We know you were, tricked, into joining the wardens."

"You know that, do you?"

Taking encouragement from his neutral tone, she nodded. "Yes. Our source tells us you want revenge on them for killing your father. We'd like to help with that."

"That's, kind, of you."

"In return all we ask is that you give us back the lands and other gifts your father bestowed on us. They're rightfully ours."

"That's all?"

"Once you're in your rightful place you may feel we deserve more." The small smile that lightened his expression encouraged her even more. "An agreement?"

"A gentlemen's agreement?" Nate stood still and watched the Bann walk across the room. She was stopped by the new commander and one of the nobles. After making sure she was deep in conversation, he walked slowly along the side of the hall. "Anders?"

"Hmm?" Happy to be distracted from his unsuccessful attempts to catch the attention of one of the only pretty girls in the room, Anders glanced at Howe. "Nathaniel."

"Ser Tamra seems to have something to say to the Commander. Perhaps you might tell her?" Nate's opinion of the mage's intelligence was confirmed when he didn't question, just nodded quickly.

"Will do."

"Good man." Continuing down the room he turned and walked back to his former place. That cursed portrait was staring at him. At least it seemed a bit friendlier now. Made him wish he was still young enough to poke his tongue out at it. Showing it his back, he stood watching the activity in the room.

Anders caught the Commander's attention. That was one pretty girl who noticed him. Once she'd freed herself from the nobles and had approached him, he smiled winningly. "Its good to be Arl." When she didn't smile he sighed. "You might want to speak to Ser Tamra over there, I hear she has something to tell you."

"Thank you." Lilibeth nodded and moved off to speak to Ser Tamra.

Anders looked over at Howe and nodded. He was given a quick nod in return. Once this hall was empty he'd find out what was going on, but for now both Howe and the Commander owed him a favour. Not bad for a boring evening in the Vigil Hall watching nobles try to outdo each other in pompousness.

. . .

"Ooh, conspiracies, I love them." Anders grinned when Howe sighed. "No really, they're fun."

"Your idea of fun is strange, Anders." Nate wasn't really annoyed, the mage had done as he'd asked, quickly and without letting the Commander know who'd told him. "This conspiracy is determined to kill the Commander and give me the Arling."

"Seems an odd goal. Why not just kill the Commander and give themselves the Arling?"

"Giving it to me grants them an air of respectability. Nothing says 'we're doing this for the good of the people' more than reinstating a former owner." Nate sighed again when Anders leaned back and looked startled. "What now?"

"I think that's the longest sentence I've ever heard you say." He was impressed when Howe merely sighed again. "If it wouldn't be rude, a question?"

"Ask."

"Why don't you join in with them? You did come to kill the Wardens, yes? Seems a quick way to accomplish your goal."

"Their goals are financially motivated. I find that offensive." Nate really didn't care if he sounded stuffy and pompous, it was the truth. "Revenge for a wrong done is one thing, this is just, petty. That aside, I'm a warden now Anders, that makes us brothers. I don't conspire against my brothers."

Anders thought about that. "You know Howe, I wasn't sure before, but now I've decided. You're alright."

"I'm so relieved." Nate smiled when Anders clapped him on the shoulder. "Shall we agree the Commander doesn't need to know about this?"

"Agreed. We'll steer her in the right direction and stop this before it gets dangerous."

. . .

"The Dark Wolf seems the best option. If you don't mind me saying?" Anders tried his best innocent expression when the Commander lifted an eyebrow at him. "Might be able to nip it in the bud before it gets too out of hand."

Lilibeth nodded. "That does seem sensible. So unlike you Anders." She grinned when he looked offended. "What say you Nathaniel?"

"I agree." Nate waited a beat. "Anders is rarely sensible." He very much enjoyed the combination of Anders' outrage and Lilibeth's laugh. "The Dark Wolf. Much the best option."

It turned out they were right. The Dark Wolf, after a hefty payment, sent them to a place called Old Stark's Farm, where they handily dispatched the conspirators and a handful of assassins.

"That should nip things in the bud, no?" Lilibeth leaned on her staff and surveyed the dead bodies. "Nicely done my wardens."

"Thank you ser, a pleasure." Anders bowed. "A hot meal would round the day off nicely."

"Nathaniel?"

"A meal would be nice." Letting them walk slightly ahead, he paused to search one of the bodies. Finding what he wanted he stood and followed them down the path.

. . .

"We had an agreement!" Bann Esmerelle hissed at Howe, keeping her voice as low as she could. "Is this how you honour your agreements?"

"An agreement?" Nate pulled out the item he'd taken off Liza Packton and held it out for her to see. "I found this on Liza Packton. I'll keep it I think."

"A letter?" It didn't take much imagination to know what was in it.

"A letter." He tucked it way again. "As to our agreement, I believe I specified a gentlemen's agreement? I'm not a gentleman, but a nobleman and you're, neither. So, we agreed on nothing. Did we?"

What?!  I'm sure that's not true.

I wish I could contribute more, my brain seems only to spit out so much creative effort before it goes on strike.  I'm not keeping up my Tolkien stuff, either.  *Damn you DA for taking over my brain.*

@Avilia: Oh, I love the thought of them approaching Nathaniel as well and him and Anders taking care of that part of it without alerting anyone else.

My prompt. Posted Image

Whenever Nathaniel stopped to think about it, he found it remarkable just how much at home he felt at Vigil’s Keep. On the one hand, he had spent his childhood there but on the other, Amaranthine under the Wardens seemed to be infinitely warmer, more genuine, just…better, overall. And he wasn’t nearly the only one to feel that way. Everyone always said that life was far easier since Rendon Howe had been killed. Well, all but the Arl’s closest political allies but that was to be expected no matter how the rest had fared.

Nathaniel hadn’t thought that way when he had first gotten back to Ferelden. He still remembered arriving back in the country of his birth after having spent eight years abroad and being painfully aware of how little he knew about what had been going on. He had thought that he knew enough. He had heard that the Grey Wardens now held his family’s land and that his father had died in disgrace. He had firmly believed that his father had become a scapegoat for backing the wrong side in the civil war that had broken out after Cailan’s death. He had been wrong. Maybe, as Delilah, had claimed, he’d been unable to face the truth about their father. He had to admit, he still hated the thought that his father had always been the monster he’d revealed himself to be once he’d massacred the Couslands.

Knowing nothing of this, Nathaniel’s grand return to Vigil’s Keep was not one of his finer moments, to put it mildly. At least he had decided against attacking the Warden-Commander despite her having murdered his father. He knew that most people disapproved of his use of the word ‘murder’ in regards to the incident but since she had broken into his father’s new Denerim estate (the fact that the Queen had wanted her to do that didn’t actually make it legal) and killed him. Regardless of what he’d done first, it was still illegal. It was still murder. He had come to terms with it, though, in the months following his conscription.

That was another thing he hadn’t expected to like. He had been forced to join the Grey Wardens for the high crime of attempting to reclaim some of his own family’s belongings (admitting he had originally been planning on assassinating her probably hadn’t helped) even though he had insisted that he’d rather have died. He had meant it, too. His family name was dragged through the mud, his father was dead, his home was gone, his brother was dead, he didn’t know that his sister had survived…what had he to live for? As she had pointed out, though, conscription meant that she wasn’t exactly giving him a choice about it.

The commander was a hated figure who never seemed to take her duties as seriously as she should. Anders was a mage who was equally flippant and seemed to make a game out of trying to make him lose his composure. Oghren was…there were really no words for Oghren. His first impression of the man was that he made drunken dwarf stereotypes look respectable. He had come around on all three of them and come to appreciate Velanna, Sigrun, and Justice as well. Somehow, when he wasn’t looking they had become more than just a ragtag collection of misfits with nowhere else to go and had actually become a competent fighting force and then, even more surprising, a family of sorts. Delilah and her children would always be most important to him but being a part of the Ferelden Wardens was…nice.

Attempting to critically and objectively look back at his childhood was difficult, both in the emotional and accuracy sense, but from what he could remember, things were far quieter and more solemn when his father was in charge. His parents greatly resented each other and the elves, in particular, were almost afraid of his father. He didn’t quite know why but he was sure there had to be some reason. Perhaps they could see some of the inner darkness that would destroy him in the future? One thing he knew for certain was that people were generally happier at Vigil’s Keep now despite the fact that actually being a Grey Warden wasn’t exactly a pleasant state of affairs. He wondered sometimes whether the way things had been and the way they were now said more about his father or the Grey Wardens.

Nathaniel had returned to Vigil’s Keep and been forced into becoming a Warden determined to hate everything and fully convinced that he wouldn’t have to try. He had started off disapproving of the almost casual way the Keep was run. He had resented the uncalled for – in his eyes – vilification of the Arling’s former lord. He had seen the Wardens as a nuisance, necessary though they may be, and lived for the day when they would no longer be needed and could be cast back in obscurity for the next four centuries. Now, though? Now, like it or not, he was one of them. Now, for better or for worse, he looked at what they did and the positions they took and agreed.

@Sarah - nice. Nate's conflicted feelings for the wardens and the new order at the Vigil and the this eventual acceptance that he was in agreement with them. I liked the way he sorted it all out in his head.

also @Sarah - ty :) I wondered who told Anders about it and decided flirting with Ser Tamra was too trite - Nate must have told him ;-)

@Addai - haha I know what you mean. I have a busy weekend (for me) and I can think is "but I have fics to work on!"

We don't know yet. It was the Cousland Fan Group. The judges (KoP and Costin_Razvan) were deliberating for six hours and decided to wait until the morning to announce the results...

I'm currently re-playing Awakening and I have to know, is it just me, or does Nate look different in the PS3 than on the PC? I don't know, seeing these screenshots people put up here he looks different. He looks much better on my ps3... or maybe I'm just crazy :S

by the way, the things that people post on these forums =) makes my day brighter all the time lol.

He DEFINITELY looks different on console. I have both. Both Nathaniel and Anders look more generic on console. I think Velanna does as well.

I saw those once but I definitely thought the PC version was better.  It might be what you're used to.
