Actually Nate and Anders got to 'play' with Vaughan for a whole month while Neria struggled to recover and get her memories back so she could testify against him.  You'd be surprised what you can live through...esp if there is a SH on hand healing what gets done once the pain ebbs and the numbness sets in...

An excerpt.  Unedited but...you get the gist...


Nathaniel’s smile was grim. From the open door leading to the cells in the palace dungeons he could hear Vaughan yelling indignantly.   Anders stood nearby, his face inscrutable.
 
Kylon stood nearby at the door watching them.
 
“Nice night,” said Nathaniel.
 
“Indeed,” Kylon responded. “I’m sure King Alistair wouldn’t mind if I got a little fresh air? The atmosphere in here is pretty thick.”
 
“Of course, we’ll see nothing untoward happens to the prisoner,” said Nathaniel. “Take your time.”
 
Kylon stepped outside as Nathaniel entered the cell block, followed by Anders.
 
Against a back wall in one of the cells was Vaughan, stripped to his small clothes.
 
“You pigs! I’ll have you flayed for this! I’m the Arl of Denerim!”
 
“Hmm Anders, flaying…that has potential.”
 
“Too fast if you ask me,” said Anders.
 
“Indeed, but not if you heal him.”
 
Vaughan’s eyes widened, fear in them at last. “You wouldn’t dare! I’m the Arl of Denerim! Guard!”
 
“Scream all you want, I think I’d actually prefer it. Anders tells me her throat was pretty raw from both screaming and then you throttling her. No one will care and no one will come. And you are no longer Arl of Denerim. King Alistair has stripped you of your title, Vaughan Kendalls.”
 
“What are you going to do?” Vaughan asked, his voice shaking.
 
“Me? I’m going to give you a lesson in respect, Kendalls,” said Nathaniel. “I want you to suffer as she did. I want you to feel her terror and her pain and then when I am done, I want you to die, slowly and painfully.”
 
Vaughan scoffed. “You can’t torture me to death. Not even King Alistair can order that.”
 
“I never said I was going to torture you to death. Did I say anything like that, Anders?”


Anders shrugged. “Not what I heard.”
 
Nathaniel’s voice dripped venom, it was so quiet and deadly. “Do you know what it feels like to be throttled, Vaughan? First the pain in your throat as your windpipe is crushed alerts you, and then slowly the lungs start to burn. Then comes the fluid building up in there. And though you kick and struggle you can’t stop it. Your chest muscles lock up as you try to draw in air that isn’t coming, that last breath seems hours ago, though you know it’s only been minutes. Then, your head throbs and your vision starts to gray. It’s not a gentle death by any stretch of the imagination.”
 
Vaughan grabbed his throat with one hand.
 
“No, I’m not going to choke you, though you deserve it. I just wanted you to ponder that image while you wait to be led to the scaffold. I’m going to attend to the rope personally. If it’s too long, I don’t want your head being ripped off your shoulders or snapping your neck or anything violently quick like that. Let’s go Anders.”
 
Nathaniel turned and Vaughan ran to the bars. 
 
“You fools, I’ll make you all pay for this! All this for one tawdry, elven ****? That **** wanted it, she begged for it. She cried and fought and kicked but I knew she wanted it. They all do!”
 
With a growl, Nathaniel turned and shot two arrows, one into each of Vaughan’s hands gripped around the bars. A shout of pain and the man dropped to his knees.
 
“Not quite the same, but it will have to do,” said Nathaniel. “Anders, let’s give him a few hours to contemplate the lesson. I need a drink I think before I continue his education. I wonder if Sergeant Kylon would like a couple of ales?”
 
“Sounds good to me.”

*Edited* Oh the bit with the hands...Vaughan had broken her hands with a mace so she couldn't cast and defend herself.

Wow that's intense, even that short excerpt. I can really see Nate going over the edge like that under the right circumstances. He did come to kill the Warden Commander after all.

Yea I can picture Nate being a good man to have at your side or watching your back if he is your friend. I see real potential for strong friendship/love there.

But if you ****** him off...I can see deadly and painful times ahead for whoever pushes his buttons.

@sylvanaerie: So I'm curoius...was Neria not the Warden Commander? If she was, did Vaughan not realize this and assume she was a random elf? Or did he honestly think her species would mean he could get away doing that to the Warden Commander/Arlessa?

@ Sarah, Yes, she was the WC (once) but she had been semi-retired (in as much as any Grey Warden can be) for some time and that position has been filled by Leonie Caron several years ago at the time frame this story is in (7 years after the Battle of Denerim). He didn't know she was formerly the WC, though he DID know she was the Hero of Ferelden (and taking and breaking and killing the hero was the majority of the thrill of it). And yes her species came into play with his thinking too.

Question - I only realised - is your story AU or did everyone leave Vaughan alive in Howe's jail?

All my girls stick a knife in him.  Even if I manage not to meta-game it (which I don't always) just talking to him is enough to set them off.

@Sarah - I haven't - I will if noone else has?  Don't want to bombard her if someone already has though.

That... thing Nate's wearing on the first encounter is so not hot! He looks like a lumberjack. Always makes me want to recruit him all the faster to get him into some decent armour...

Makes him look like Lloyd - for some reason that male outfit gives them a pot belly.  I agree, best to get him out of it quickly :innocent:

She didn't kill Vaughan. She didn't ask questions when she found people in Howe's dungeons and he said he would vote for her side in the Landsmeet. (Which he did) She didn't learn what a slime he was till a bit later. The only one who kills vaughan in my games is Kallian.  The others let him go (unless I don't need his vote) then I just leave him.  Its funny watching him scream at me through the bars

Thankfully I never need  his vote.  It could be just that I'm usually playing an elf and they tend to get a little testy when someone calls them 'knife-ears' and 'lazy'. So, you know....murder knife time.

He does have two good points - one, that convo allows my pc to tell him she's the Queen of Antiva and two, his VO is great.  He does a terrific job I think.  Luckily we can always chat to Ser Bryant/Helpful Refugee for a while to hear more of it.

Talk about an ungrateful little...I let him go my first game because I was just freeing everyone but subsequent games I asked Soris what happened to him and then asked Vaughan about Soris and...dead. One of these days, I'm going to see if you can really get him to abdicate and join the Chantry like I saw in the toolset.

You're right, one should have the correct priorities: out - quickly... in - slowly

He's Ser Bryant too?  OMG I thought he sounded familiar.  Plus I heaard the VO actor for Hawke is supposed to be an "Unpopular character" so...Im really hoping it IS Nick Bolton!
