Does anyone else half expect when you confront Howe in the dungeon for him to rip off his armor and stand revealed in Fishnets and corset and start doing the TIme Warp with his cronies? Would brreak immersion immensely...but be an incredibly funny moment!

ToP ? Really ?  Okay...umm
No good nate pics...this is all I got for ToP.

Should I admit I didn't actually realise Tim Curry did Rendon Howe's voice until after a few playthroughs? That's when I started visiting the forums and reading the wiki....

Yeah, I'm well known for my quick and incisive grasp of every situation.

It wasn't all bad though - I didn't recognise Kate Mulgrew's voice either. Oddly - Steve Valentine's I did - which is very strange because I haven't seen him in much...

You know, I've seen the movie (about 1k times when I was a teenager), seen the stage production (several times with different actors) and I have to say - Tim Curry is the best.

No one even comes close to bettering his Frank-N-Furter.

See, I recognized his voice the minute I heard it and, despite no spoilers or anything else, I realized what was about to happen to the Couslands two minutes into the story because of it. Posted Image

Edit: I should really watch Clue again...

My excuse is I was concentrating so fiercely on the plot points being revealed in the dialogue that I didn't...yeah, no, I'm just unobservant.    I blame the fact that I'm a visual person.

Nate's not sure he believes that excuse:

Thankfully I didn't have to know it was Tim Curry voicing Howe to realise he was a slime bag.  He was just a bit too sorry that his soldiers were late for my liking.

Hallooooo!

Sorry about the super late lateness, guys. I completely forgot about Nate promptness until after I'd gone to bed last night, only to discover this morning that my computer had acquired a Nasty Virus of Doooooom!.

It's finally fixed now, but it's much later.

For a prompt, if you guys haven't gone ahead without me:

Fergus Cousland

(If you have gone ahead without me, please disregard this message. Thanks!

Generally, when I do something generic like this, I assume that you would work it in how he relates to Nathaniel somehow on your own.  One obvious way to do that is to describe Nathaniel's thoughts or relationship with Fergus Cousland, but anything that has to do with Nathaniel and includes Fergus could work.

I want to leave it intentionally vague so that I don't hamper peoples' creativity, especially for the drawing/photomanip/comic types.  Since I'm not an artist myself, I don't want to limit it for those folks.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and thanks Avilia!  man, that was a nasty bugger. :o

My prompt response.

Quick explanation - this is in my fan fic universe. Nate and Fergus were friends before Nate was sent away. That seemed reasonable to me - if their fathers were friends that they'd be as well. I think they're around the same age.

Bits of this are set around existing fics but I hope the story is still clear. Just ask if anything needs an explanation.

Oh and thank you for this prompt Jenn - I've been dying for an excuse to write this.

--------------------------------------

"Are you insane!? Your father will disown you! Or worse." Fergus growled in frustration when Nate just shrugged. "Don't shrug. Maker's sake Nate. Be sensible."

"I know my father will be annoyed but he'll see reason." Nate had to believe that.

"Reason! Your father? You can't seriously believe that? We're talking about an elf! A Dalish elf! He'll kill one of you and as you're his son, I know which one it'll be."

"Father won't kill Rhosyn." He sighed when Fergus threw his hands in the air and started pacing. "You look like your father when you do that."

"Even my father wouldn't tolerate this. If I went to him and told him I wanted to marry an elf, he'd skin me." Stopping he glared at Nate. "And my father is a much more tolerant man than yours."

"My father isn't intolerant."

"Huh!" Fergus left it at that. No point getting Nate annoyed with him when he needed to make him see sense. "Don't do it Nate."

"What do you suggest I do? I won't keep her hidden away as if I'm ashamed of her." He'd die first.

Anyone else he'd probably suggest just that. Not Nate however. "Leave Ferelden. Go to Rivain or somewhere where they don't care about humans and elves marrying."

"Leave?"

"Leave. I can't see that you have any choice."

Nate frowned. "You may be right."

"Of course I'm right. Its your only hope of any kind of future with this, Rhosyn." As much as he hated to see friend leave, if he was set on this course, it was his only hope. "Go soon I'd say. Your father has scouts everywhere. If you don't leave quickly, he'll find out for himself what's been going on."

. . .

Fergus kicked the coals, knocking them back into life. He hated waiting. It reminded him too much of the Blight and the things he'd waited for then. Things that hadn't survived. His parents, his wife. His son.

After sitting down on the upturned log, he threw a stick into the coals and when that caught, another. Slowly feeding the blaze he thought about what had happened. What Rowena had tried to do. Poison the whole Keep to get at Nate. He hated to admit it, even to himself, but Rhosyn was right. Rowena needed help.

His head jerked up at the sound of a stick cracking. That would be Nate. Should he tell him about Rhosyn? She hadn't asked him not to. He'd wait and decide after seeing Nate.

Just as they came out of the trees, he threw another stick on the fire. "You make good time for someone on foot." Not alone, Nate had someone with him, a woman. Dalish by the look of her. This would be the Warden he'd heard about. The one they said he was in love with. Caethes.

No, he'd not tell him about Rhosyn. Not now.

. . .

"You didn't tell me." Nate took a step closer to Fergus, who lifted his chin but didn't move. "You didn't tell me Rhosyn was here."

"No, I didn't." He'd thought it the right choice at the time and still did. "You were, otherwise occupied."

"Was it that, or did you have other reasons? Rhosyn's told me about your, involvement, with her."

"That's past and none of your concern." Fergus wasn't explaining himself to anyone, least of all Nate. Nate who'd allowed his father to get the better of him. Nate who'd abandoned someone he'd professed to love.

"None of my concern!?" If this wasn't someone who he'd once considered his closest friend, Nate would hit him for that.

"You'll remember I did sent Rhosyn to you. Once I knew it was right to do so."

"I." Curse it. "I shouldn't be. Andraste's sake Fergus, why?"

"Why what? Why did I send her to you?" He knew very well that wasn't what Nate was asking, but, if he wanted to ask, he could ask. Not hedge about.

"Why did you sleep with Rhosyn?"

"Sleep?" Seeing Nate's expression he held his hand up. "Apologies. Mutual need? Comfort? She's a good friend and we like each other? Maker man, why do you think? She's a beautiful woman and we were both lonely."

"You didn't think about making it more than that?"

"Rhosyn loves you. It would take a lot more than someone like me to change to that. Even if I'd wanted to, which I hadn't. If I'd been free to do so, things may have been different, but I wasn't. I'm the Teryn of Highever, I have a responsibility to my family and my people."

"Your duty." How often had Nate heard his father mock the Cousland's and their sense of duty. "I'm sorry Fergus, I shouldn't have attacked you like that."

"Why not? I had sex with the woman you love." Fergus crossed his arms and smirked. "Didn't I?"

"I don't love Rhosyn."

"Oh? No? My mistake. I'm sure you turn that shade of green all the time." Nate and the whole country could think what they wanted. Fergus was convinced Nate was still in love with Rhosyn. Why Nate couldn't see that he didn't know. Not his problem. Fergus had one of his own to deal with. "As you're here." He cleared his throat.

"Hmm?"

"I've. Ah. That is. I'm about to wed again and I'd like you to attend. You and Rhosyn."

"Marry? I'd congratulate you but you don't seem too happy."

"No, no I'm happy, just, confused." Fergus still had problems believing it. "It wasn't my decision you see. I was instructed we'd marry."

"Instructed? By whom?"

"My lovely bride." He grinned widely when Nate laughed.

@Avilia: So Nathaniel was in exile over a woman, huh? And then he left her at some point to be with another Dalish elf. That sounds like quite the tale and also quite awkward once Nate met up with her again...especially after Fergus slept with her, too! I am quite intrigued.

Thanks :)  I hope it wasn't too wound up with the existing stories?  I've been dying to write Fergus' bit of it ever since I realised Rhosyn and he had been 'friendly'.

The story is - Nate was in love with Rhosyn when they were young.  His father found out and had him shipped off to the Free Marches.  He came back to Ferelden for revenge and then met Caethes.  Who is 'the' Warden.  After much too'ing and fro'ing she decided being Dalish was more important than Nate and took off.

That's when Fergus sent Rhosyn to Nate at the Vigil.  He's still working himself out about that (as shown by the end of the story).

Here is my prompt response. Posted Image

Nathaniel was supposed to have left for the Free Marches three weeks ago. According to Delilah, their father was threatening to come up to Highever and personally drag him to the ship that would take him there which would certainly be a sight to see since Nathaniel was a good half a foot taller than his father. Still, it would be the kind of thing that he would never ever be able to live down and so he’d really rather avoid having that scenario play out. He’d be gone this time tomorrow, however, and so even if his father did mean to do what he said he’d arrive to find Nathaniel already gone.

Normally, Nathaniel was much more of a dutiful son than this but he was going to be gone for years and he really hadn’t a clue when he’d be back. He was really going to miss Ferelden. Additionally, his childhood friend Fergus Cousland had just become a father a week ago and Nathaniel wouldn’t have missed that for the world. He felt like he was running out on him either way since the child – Oren – was still so very new but it couldn’t be helped. Fergus had said that he had understood and Nathaniel could only prey that he had meant that.

“Nathaniel?” a low voice broke the silence. “What are you still doing up?”

Nathaniel looked up from the portrait of the Teyrna Eleanor (he had always loved to look at portraits) he had been studying to see Fergus standing in the doorway. “I could ask you that very question, you know.”

Fergus grinned. “That you could but – and not to sound childish here – I so asked first.”

Nathaniel fought the urge to roll his eyes. Maker, and Fergus was the elder of the two. “I was just reflecting on how this will be my last night in Ferelden for quite some time.”

Fergus’ grin faded at that. “I know,” he said with a sigh, running his fingers through his hair. “It’s hard to believe. And your father hasn’t explained why at all?”

“He said something about how he wanted me to become more self-sufficient like they had to be during the rebellion,” Nathaniel replied once again. He had Fergus had had this conversation more times than he could count, as had he and Delilah, he and Thomas, he and Anastasia, he and Adria… “He thinks that it will make me a more suitable heir for the Arling.”

Fergus was still incredulous. “And he can’t make you a ‘more suitable heir’ without sending you out of the country?”

“My father is not a man willing to let his authority be questioned,” Nathaniel reminded his friend. “And so I can only press him for answers so far before the conversation turns sour. That’s all I’ve managed to get out of him and if he has some ulterior motive for sending me away then he’s not going to tell me what it is.”

The two stood together in glum silence before Fergus shook himself. “Oriana made me get up to change little Oren but since I was already awake I went down to the kitchens to get a snack and was on my way back to bed. Oriana doesn’t really approve of my habit of eating in the middle of the night but since I was up anyway-

“She still wouldn’t approve,” Nathaniel cut him off.

Fergus made a face. “But she’s the one who made me get up!” he protested.

“She still wouldn’t approve,” Nathaniel repeated matter-of-factly.

Fergus thought it for a moment before shrugging. “You may be right. Just the same, she’ll never know.”

Something about that whole situation just struck Nathaniel as odd. “Why were you changing him in the middle of the night, anyway?” he asked curiously.

Fergus looked annoyed that Nathaniel apparently hadn’t been listening. “Because Oriana didn’t want to do it and said something about the fact that she had gotten him last time.”

“No, I understand that part,” Nathaniel corrected. “What I was curious about was why you and Oriana were the ones who would have to be changing Oren in the middle of the night.”

Another strange look. “Because…he’s our son? What, do you expect my parents to do it? Oh, Maker help us, Anastasia? She’s barely even interested in him during the day!”

Nathaniel exhaled loudly in frustration. Why was this simple thought so difficult to get across? “This is a teynir. Your family is the second most powerful apart from the Theirins. You have countless servants. Wouldn’t it be easier for one of them to take care of your son, at least at night?”

Fergus looked surprised at the suggestion. “I suppose it would be but…I don’t know. It feels kind of impersonal, you know? Anastasia and I both had Nan take care of us when we were little and our parents were busy but when they weren’t they were always there tending to our needs. Mother is still in the process of trying to talk her out of retiring from cooking duties and going back to being a nanny for little Oren but he’s just so little now that it seems a bit soon to have someone else take care of him when they don’t have to. Besides, I don’t want someone else – even someone like Nan – to spend more time with my son than I do and Oriana feels the same way.”

Nathaniel felt a small stab of jealousy at that remark but quickly suppressed it. Fergus was his friend and it wouldn’t do to hold something against him that he had no more control of than Nathaniel himself did. What Fergus had described not wanting for his son was exactly what Nathaniel and his siblings had had to contend with growing up. Adria was a wonderful woman and in so many ways she was like a mother to them but they had barely even known their mother when she had died and their father, though he tried, wasn’t exactly the most approachable man either. Part of him wanted desperately what Fergus took for granted but that was not to be and so there was no use dwelling on it.

“You’re a good father,” he said instead.

Fergus beamed at him.

@Sarah - that was nice. I liked Nate and Fergus together. Nate's confusion over child rearing duties and then his realisation how different his own was. I will admit I loved the mental image of a short Rendon Howe dragging his much larger son down to the docks.

I'm tempted to mod Fergus into Origins and see which female npc he likes the most. That would mean booting up the gaming box...what happened to my gaming addiction!? Can't even count on that any more.

Nate's having a good time though.

You know what this thread needs? MOAR NATE. More pics of Nate, more talking baout Nate, Nate Nate Nate Nate Nate.

Hypothetical Scenario: Cousland and Alistair were boinking during the blight. Alistair dumps Cousland, because she can't provide heirs. Cousland and Nate boink during Awakening. Alistair realizes he made a mistake, wants Cousland back. Nate is not too happy about this, since the king is pining over his boinking partner. Assassination attempt on King Alistair, Nate is framed. Nate swears to Cousland it wasn't him. Does she believe him?

Discuss.

Hmm. Depends on how smart the Cousland is and how much she wants to go back to Alistair.

I don't think Nate would be into sneaky assassination (okay fine, sneaky assassination, again). In that scenario I reckon he'd be more likely to punch Alistair or something equally direct. Would also depend on whether Cousland is also pining over Alistair. Does she want to go back to him and was Nate just 'Mr right here"?

There's my thinking. My answer? Yes I think she would. They've been through enough together that she should know Nate and trust him.

Hehe!  I kinda love the idea of Nate punching the king becuase he wants his girl Posted Image

As far as pining over Alistair...what if she's not sure?  They were both kind of 'Mr. Right There' in both situations... Are either of them really love?

...I constantly have little soap operas going on in my head.  It's the only thing that gets me through my work day.  The more 'drama' and ridiculous, the better Posted Image

That's a good point and something I've often considered fits the Alistair romance in Origins (don't kill me fangirls).  He's young and she's his first experience of women.  Its natural he'd think himself in love.

But I digress.    If both men love her and she can't decide between them?  Apart from wanting to punch her myself, if I was writing this as a fic I'd probably make sure she lost both of them <_<

Okay seriously - if she's not sure?    That's a hard one.   What if we look at it from the other side.  Is Nate in love or is she "Ms Right Here"?  Is Alistair in love or just feeling nostalgic?  Which one of them needs her more (yes, let's play the Casablanca card).  I'll have to ponder this a while longer.

I'm not writing a fic (i'm a terrible writer, I swear I can barely speak English), just playing the soap opera in my head.

While I love Alistair to pieces, I'm with you on him thinking he is in love, since this is really his first real relationship with a woman. Realistically, it could go either way.
