I didn't mean more known back then. I was talking in our years, mine especially, the 90s. Everybody would talk about Maradona, but not mention Pelé. As for how the Argentinians feel about Pelé, well, I'd define that as pure racism. Defining someone from the color of the skin is wrong. One's action define someone.



It is true however that Pelé has 20 years more than Maradona. So it's period. Time difference. I for one knew him for his successes with Napoli I believe. But before that, I wasn't born!

Pele to me was a superior Lineker....but he didnt do a great deal else. Maradona on the other hand was more complete, tracked back more, was really an attacking midfielder than a striker and his work rate (imo) was better.

And yes, thats from an Englishman (lets face it, ok so he hand balled in the '86 game, but hius second was the greatest WC goal ever scored, we would have lost anyway), his autobiography is very interesting, very honest.

But of course, I can see Rage's POV very well with him being Brazilian, the rivally between the two countries is as bad as some of our local team rivalries.

Actually, it's the other way around. Pelé was way more a complete player. He mastered it all, with both legs, head, but mostly, his brain. Faster than anything around. Watch what he did to Uruguay keeper in 1970! Ask Gordon Banks who's made world famous because of a Pelé perfect header!

As for the greatest WC goal, no way that goal was equal to this, by a 16 year old kid!

I have to join in too and agree with Maviarab. I always thought Maradonna was a more complete player. The man was still a threat when he had the ball in his own half. I always viewed Pele as more of a goalscorer too. I read somewhere that most of Pele's 1000 goals were scored in the Brazilian league against semi-professional teams. Not sure how true that is.

I wouldnt be a proper Irishman or Manchester United fan if I didnt point out Georgie Best was the best player never to make it to the world cup. And 10x the player that clown Cristiano Ronaldo is.



Looks who is top now. I always dreamed I would some day win the world cup .

huh.. you know that Diego has always been a fluffly that nevert actuaklly marked anyone, right? He's a gifted player, no question about it. I've always admired him. But he only has a left foot. His most famous header was not with his head but with his hand instead.

I wish you could have watched live, as I have, what Pele was capable of. He once gained a penalty kick with the ball at his team's defense. While alone in the enemy area with only a centerback and the keeper there, he rushed towards the goal and the ball was with the other team at their attack, the CB panicked and hit him. Penalty!

Not true at all. Sao Paulo State championship is the hardest regional tournament and most famous in Brazil. My own team, Corinthians, the most successful winner in this tournment, couldn't win a single title between 1954 to 1976 (won '77 at last) and had a 11 years period without winning Pelé's Santos.

Seriously, watch some Pele at YouTube. Real shame that tecnology was not tthe same back then. My point is, he could do and did anything that Maradona was capable of, including goals like that vs England in '86. (which Ronaldo also matched while playing for Barcelona) No one else could do that. But Maradona could not do a lot of stuff that only pelé was capable of.

Ronaldo is the "perfect striker". Maradona and Pelé are genious of the same stature unequalled by anyone, but Pelé still was at one level higher.

EDIT: And this forgetting Garrincha with his crooked legs. Try watching his moves too. And my Corinthians' Rivelino, who was Maradona's idol in his own words.

I think as hungry as Ghana are you dont lose a player as good as Essien and not miss him. I have to throw my support behind the Serbians and for the afternoon become Serbian.

EDIT: What he said was Vidic was raped by Fernando Torres in a game. Which apparently got viewers sending in complaints. Whats the world coming to.....

Ok I will agree to let you win the argument. If I was picking a team I would pick Maradona over Pele but thats just from what I have seen of both players. You have seen more of both players so I will bow to your knowledge.

WEll, it's like discussing Ayrton Senna vs Michael Schumacher. Those who didn't see Senna racing prolly think that Schummy is the greatest driver. They may not know that Schummy's first Pole-position only happened after Senna died. I'd bet that Senna would go to win all records that Schummy now has if not for that stupid changes in '94 that made Williams a piece of crapola of a car.
