It was at least used once in the Euro championships, since Oliver Bierhof scored 1996 the "golden goal" in the finals for Germany.

*Edit* Mav is right, was used in the 1998 world cup as well.

FIFA stopped using GG in 2004 or so... since then it's extra time, and if still no winner, penalty shooting.
