And I won't even go so far as to say America deserved to win that game, the way they deserved to win against Slovenia. Ghana played a great game. They were able to take a lead twice in the game because they played well for 120 minutes, while America played well for about 65 minutes or so.
But still, the end of that match really upset me. I mean it made me pretty darn angry. I would have been more than happy to head home being beaten by a team that flat outplayed us. However, Ghana clinched that victory by taking dive after dive after dive, just to run down the clock. What a cheap, unsportsmanlike, and classless way to win a game. The people of Africa should be ashamed to have clinched a victory through such theatrics, and I can say with full honesty that if the American team were to play like that I would stop supporting them. That is not what we do in American sports.
Furthermore, I am seriously suspicious that the refs just have wanted America to lose throughout this tournament. We've gotten a number of seriously rotten calls, a whole slew of questionable calls, and all through the overtime in this game the ref just nodded his head to Ghana rolling on the floor moaning "OOOHHHHH There's still time on the clock... I mean, my ankle! My ankle! Yeah... ankle..." Then he gives us only three minutes of extra time after all their play action wasted at least five. What BS officiating.
America, you played a great game. It would have been far more fitting had you advanced, especially had the game been played and officiated with class. But you can hold your heads high. You're still heroes.

I'm proud of the American team because they played to win, they kept moving forward, and they pushed that attack all the way to the last minute. They can walk away with their heads held high.

I agree with you but for one small thing. The US didn't lose because Ghana stop playing and started acting in the last 15 minutes of the Extra Time. Sure, they did it. All teams do when they want to clinch the victory. The US would have done it too. But Ghana also did it by keeping the ball with them, even in those 15 minutes. USA seemed very powerless then and we can relate. The mind orders it but the body cannot comply.
The US lost because they failed in playing their best game. They weren't aggressive enough even when they needed the goal. In the end, it wouldn't matter if the ref had given another 30 minutes. In a great part because they were exhausted. Ghana would most likely defend and not suffer another goal.
This was the best ref in any USA match in the tournament. I can relate with being upset in such occasions but the real blame should be directed at the lack of goals!
My team, Corinthians, after the best group campaign in Libertadores this year, were disqualified by Flamengo after a 2-2 aggregate (0x1 and 2x1 scores) but because Flamengo scored 1 goal in our home, they went on. (100th anniversary year of the club. It would mean the world for us to win it for the first time after so many attempts) It is a b/s rule and UCL clubs that lost because of it know what I mean. There should be a better way to call a winner.
BUT, the real blame is that, in the second leg game, our home, we scored 2x0 playing awesomely and stopped. We should keep it on until a 4x0 or 5x0 was on the scoreboard. Flamengo had ONE lucky counter attack and there it was. We wwere out. So, it is our own fault in the end.
Team USA should have pressured Ghana all the time from the start. When you create 50 chances, you can miss 45 and you still score 5! That's, how great teams do. It would have worked for Barcelona in UCL this year but they had a bad luck. Inter was good at defense and it's a lot easier to destroy than create chances.
Anyway, don't give up cheering on them. There will be another World Cups and with a strong base work, there will be great young players for your country.
You don't really know how it hurts until you lose a WC championship match playing in your home, like Brazil did in 1950. After scoring 1x0 against Uruguay, they let Uruguay come back to a 2x1 in Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro. England should have lost it in 1966 but they had the ref in their pockets. After all, no home team will survive a loss in the final match playing in their home!
So, USA best chance will be when hosting another WC like they intend to, in 2018 or 2022.

No they would not have. I think that's something that a lot of the rest of the world still doesn't understand about sports and sportsmanship in this nation, and in particular how it's affected our view of soccer.RageGT wrote...
The US would have done it too.
We don't play games like that. We look down on that kind of play. We call those players nasty names, and we scorn them. We call it cheating and we call it cheap. And in general, American has shunned soccer because that is how the game of soccer is played in most teams and on most of the fields.
In the end, I'm not saying USA would have won, or that we would have deserved to win. I'm just voicing the American view of sports. Shut up and play the game. Stop crying. Stop diving. Stop with the theatrics. Maybe things would have been different, and maybe not. We did attack them aggressively, and creatively, but it proved to be too little too late, and we missed a number of the chances that we opened up for ourselves. Had we that bit of extra time, perhaps we could have pushed it to one more goal with a couple more of those opportunities opened up. Then again maybe not. We'll never know for sure.
*edit:
Oh, and yeah, this is the best officiating we've received in any game this world cup. But that's not saying much, because the officiating in the last games was downright abhorant. One of those refs was even (effectively) fired. It's just my own view, watching this, that the refs didn't want us to win. Most of the world doesn't want us to win. Because they know America doesn't really care about soccer all that much, and it would feel rotten to have such a team win it all.

Football is a gentleman's game played by thugs, as the saying goes.
And "everything goes" when you are in the worldcup. Jump, drop and roll, there is nothing worse than your team losing. The players are aware of this and do whatever it takes. I don't care if the US thinks that they should "stop acting and play". The acting is part of the play, it has always been and US fans watching the match and feeling the other team didn't win through superior footbal are just not aware that this is how it is. A bad team can make it to the semifinals, a good team gets sent home in group stage, an offside marks the winning goal... these things happen. Matches are played in 90 minutes, and that is more than enough time to counter any acting and unfair goals with goals of your own. Sometimes it's just bad luck, and you curse and move on, not blame it on the sport itself. Nobody remembers how dignified or clean you played, people remember who won.
