It's a step in the right direction in any case. If Shep continues to be modeled like LOtSB, then he'll evolved nicely as a character.

I hope they'll do this. As jtav said, it's all too one-sided with Shepard's romances, even if less so with Miranda than with the other LIs. I like the romance for the depth it adds to Miranda, but the game makes it hard to care about Shepard. Giving him a wider range of emotions (I should say, a range of emotions in the first place) without having the option to make him express it in the game is frustrating. I don't know why they didn't include more options like that - those players who don't like them could always avoid them.

That doesn't change that Shepard/Miranda is my OTP, but it makes the experience less that it could be.

For each emotion type, there should be different lines in programing, different voice recordings.... basicaly additional work for BW that will take additional time. So they will consider the practicality of that before they deside to anything about emotions.

It's tough, I'll admit that much.

Ummm... forgive me if this is a repost but:

True it's extra work, but is it really extra work in comparison to a NPC giving different responses according to your decisions in game and/or in reply to your paragon/renegade options?

I mean, is it insurmountable? I would lean to the negative. I don't think it's 'extra work' in as much in regards to budgetary constraints (and I'm not necessarily talking about the cost of production, but rather their cost on the game dvd's)

Imo it's extra work that's unquestionably worth it. They should make it a priority. I also have a hard time believing it costs more to tell Mark Meer to put more emotional inflection in his voice.

Especially since he's paid to be professional and to be a voice actor...

Right, I can just see him sitting there, "Sorry, emotional intensity costs you another 5000..."

To be honest, I've never been able to roleplay as a woman... other than the assassin in diablo 2, but that's not quite the same thing is it?

Wow, my tangents are making me sound insane I think... (lol?)

There was a reason why I started talking about roleplaying as a woman, honest.... although I guess I'll leave that to you as an exercise as to working out why I did :P

Funny thing.. I actually thought Hale had less emotion up to Freedom's Progress. I thought she took a little while to warm up.

Probably has something to do with my mentioning Jennifer Hale, and you thinking, "Oh I've never really heard what she sounds like, I'd need to play as a woman to do that. Hey now that I think on it I've never been able to roleplay as a woman."

My characters in Mass Effect are primarily male, actually.

It's just because of the Mirimance.

Right now I'm trying not to go back to my femSheps very often. Hearing Hale's voice and going back to Meer's... well let's just say I want to forget what Hale's voice sounds like, it makes things easier playing as manShep.

Heh....my characters in most RPGs are primarily female. That included ME1 until Miranda and the ME2 female LIs came along.

Me too.
But in ME1 I played both gender and I only imported MaleShepard saves in ME2 because of Miri.

Hale swings between totally flat and far too emotional with seemingly no in-between, doing femshep has destroyed her VA reputation for me - she's unbelievable as Shepard.

As for Shepard opening up: it's a nice idea, particularly for the romances, but given BW's preoccupation with keeping Shepard as open and blank a slate as possible, i don't see how they can reconcile the two.

Ding Ding Ding!

I don't know why I can't, it's probably something along the lines: "No way, I can't play a woman because by their very definition they can't be rational creatures!" ;)

Har har, I'm very clever, I can make a snarky sexist joke on the sly.

Is the fact that you can't stand Jennifer Hale something that's only a recent development in ME2 or was it the same for ME1?

What always weirded me out about Hale as fem!Shep is that she also voices Bastila in KOTOR I. In my mind, fem!Shep and Bastila sound nothing alike. I don't know if it's the accent, but Hale just sounds a lot huskier (is that the word I'm looking for?) as Shepard.

I've also played so many male Shepards that hearing the lines in any other voice sounds strange.

Are you kidding? My jaw dropped when I was first told Hale did femShep and Bastila. Totally unrecognizable. Bastila sounds much more feminine. femShep sounds... throatier.

I actually wasn't saying I can't stand Jennifer Hale, Arijharn. I mean I like her voice acting better, and I don't want to listen to it because when I go back to Meer his voice sounds comparatively worse.

Hale's voice isn't leagues better or anything, it's just that I feel she comes off sounding more natural in general. Sometimes Meer's lines can totally ruin a scene for you. You wince.

I imported my female Shepard primarily for Thane, but I enjoy playing as her regardless. I generally play as a male Shepard; I have one who romanced Miranda and another who stayed loyal to Ashley (my canon).

Is this the first time anyone told you that Hale did Bastila too?

I think Hale had some problems with voicing Shepard because of the nature of the role compared to what she normally does. I imagine voicing a character who is intended to be a complete blank slate would be quite difficult for someone used to doing well-defined characters like Bastila. At times I can almost imagine Hale struggling to infuse emotion into really bland or awkward lines.

I actually kind of wish that Jennifer Hale hadn't been pegged to do fem!Shep and had instead been reserved for a female LI. I still consider what she did with Bastila to be one of the best voice-acting jobs I've ever experienced in a game.
