Hale's voice isn't leagues better or anything, it's just that I feel she comes off sounding more natural in general. Sometimes Meer's lines can totally ruin a scene for you. You wince.

I have to say, I think Hale's voicing in the scene where  Tali finds out her father may be killed on the Alarei (the whole 'fire' statement) was better delivered. The joys of Youtube.

Meer's worst voice I thought was the "Oh I'm definitely interested." But I thought the "Love? Who said anything about love -- I just want to get you into bed" was rather awesome.

Yup, I agree 100% with Arijharn there.

Mark Meer has obviously had practice with that line!

To me it's one of the worst line of the game. First because it doesn't fit with the mood of the conversation (Miranda express her feelings for shepard for the first time, and the only thing he can say is a stupid joke ?), then because the voice acting is terrible.
I never choose this line.
This is how I play this scene.

Miranda apparently appreciates his attempt to lighten the mood. I even find it fitting, given how difficult it is for Miranda to accept deep emotions, that Shepard tries to shift the mood a bit. I can see why people might prefer the "Don't know, don't care" option, but "What matter is how we feel" sounds empty of real content to me.

BTW, "Stop smiling, damn it" is my favorite Miranda line, IMO it establishes a familiarity and emotional connection between them unmatched by any other dialogue item. even the fantastic promise/no promise scene.

"Oh, I'm definitely interested" gets the distinction of MM's worst line IMO, all the worse because we can't avoid it.

It resonates with me personally because I think it's a c-ocky thing to say. It's not something you say in seriousness because that would make you an a*shole. Miranda responds to it how it is, a joke. I find that a woman is far more likely to respond favourably by being a c-ocky a*shole as opposed to one who is caring and sensitive all the time... I dunno, maybe because it's not what they might expect they therefore become more 'intense' in figuring you out.

Maybe I'm not making sense.

Remember in Star Wars when Han is going to get frozen in carbonite and Leia says "I love you" to him and he replies with that steely gaze and self assured cocky response of "I know"? It's exactly like that. It works because a) it's not expected, B) she probably picks up on what's not said anyway and c) She wants to find out for sure.

To me, it's not the time to lighten the mood, it's the time for Shepard to tell Miranda what he feel for her.

Exactly. A response like that creates a challenge, a subtle tension that attracts rather than repulses, as it would if meant seriously.

Basically, I do that in real life and it works out for me... it's because of that it resonates with me strongly. Frankly, I'd do the exact same thing :S

I agree. Shepard can light up the mood after their time in the engine room and during.^_^

Maybe, but the manner in which he does that isn't exactly convincing. I've used both lines in my games, but the middle option always comes across as saying a lot less than the upper option, sort of a standardized phrase. Apart from that, "What matters is how we feel." isn't exactly a fitting reply. He should answer the question of why they should follow what they feel in a situation like that.

Shepard knows how difficult it is for Miranda to express emotions, and the fact that he hides his feelings behind this stupid joke, is a selfish reaction.
I would not have problems with this kind of lines during the previous conversation, but now, it ruins the mood.

The problem I personally would have with him outright saying "I love you" is that I just can't see it as being a thing that you can readily say within knowing someone within only a couple of months, even if he knows his feelings for sure.

Sure, it's romantic and all, but I just think it's ridiculous.

As it is, I think he is saying 'I love you' but in a cheeky manner that if Miranda didn't quite return his feelings he wouldn't be hurt for a want of a better term.

"What matters is how we feel" is not the perfect answer, but to me it's far more "in the mood" than "Love ?"

I didn't expect Shepard to say "I love you" (maybe he will, in ME3).
But this joke is completely ridiculous, and to me a Shepard who would act like that, doesn't deserve to be with Miranda.

You know what I'd really like Shepard to do in this situation: make a promise for the future, should they survive. He's already said he cares about Miranda, which is as close to "I love you" as is appropriate at this point, and now he should follow up with something like "That won't change if we survive this, but if we don't, I'd rather have had a day with you than no time at all." Only not in so many words, perhaps.

This. The brevity is needed and appropriate in the situation and followed up with the renegade kiss and "stop smiling, dammit" line is among the best exchanges (and most natural) in the game. The empire-esque rougish air is also pretty cool and gives Shepard himself some much-needed personality on his otherwise rather blank slate (as previously discussed).

True, but a little bit of mystery builds attraction.

@Jebel Krong:

Don't make the mistake of mixing up the conversations. The kiss and "stop smiling, damn it" is in conversation 3, "Who said anything about love?" in conversation 4. I've made that mistake often, unfortunately. In intro to the kiss is "You're jealous", which isn't really something I prefer to the alternative but choose it because it leads to the options I favor.

I really don't think this is more natural exchange.

And I will never play the renegade lines of this conversation, because I think what Shepard says about her in the paragon lines is far more important than a simple kiss.

Honestly, I can't imagine that a real life relationship could start with someone declaring their love for the other person essentially out of the blue without that person running for the hills. This is why I think Shep's playful line is more realistic.

There is a difference between being mysterious, and acting like a jerk.

I think miranda always have had some feelings for shepard but she never acted on them because she thought it would be stupid. But after she see's oriana with her family she realize how lonely she have been her in life. And that opent the door for shepard. I know it sounds stupid but its my interpretation.^_^
