Complicated? No, that's not strange. But I don't think I've met a fictional character with some traits I strongly dislike, of whom I'd still say I like, even less love him or her as a whole except from a distance as appreciating a well-made character. Which means, "complicated" almost never results in "love". Either the traits I dislike - which almost always exist - are not enough to matter much at all (as with Miranda), or they're enough to make me only "like someone somewhat" (as, for instance, with Thane, who I can appreciate as an extremely well-made character with considerable depth, but like him? Only somewhat).jtav wrote...
And is it really that strange to have complicated emotions toward a character? I'm starting to feel a bit freakish.
I guess it comes down to the fact that we are different.

Most of the Sheps never forgave her for the control chip. I wouldn't in real life.
That seems pretty unfair. She was honest enough to say it and as a point of fact there was no control chip. Then she serves under you and fights by your side for months on end....
further if your character feels that way why on earth would you help her with her sister in the first place? Generally people I hate I do not risk my life to do favors for.

Just checking. Ieldra isn't the first person I've confused. I suppose I should hate her. It'd be more clear cut.
Hey it is obviously you really care about the character.
I am not really sure why you seem determined to see the 'control chip' thing in the worst light possible. I mean the woman did bring you back to life and saved your life at least once.

First point: I know there was no control chip. If there had been, I wouldn't be here. I regard that sort of thing as a violation of human rights and human dignity on a very basic level. The fact that she considers it doesn't say good things about her moral compass. But, as a player, I have a certain distance that allows me to overlook that to a degree in favor of her better qualities. I missed that line the first time, so my initial positive experience had already been had. Would it have made a difference? I don't know.

You know....it's not possible to see the control chip issue in a good light if you ask me. What saves the situation is that she didn't implant a control chip - neither in you nor in anyone else as far as you know. So you can make light of it and ask yourself "would she really do that?" instead of knowing that she would and having to hate her for it.Valmy wrote...

Maybe, but can we really know for sure? I mean, if Shepard works as the chip wishes, it doesn't matter what colours he is wearing.

I take her at her word that she would. Good thing she didn't. It would have made a romance impossible.
Not like Shepard would have a choice in that case.

Suppose that control chip would influence not what you can or cannot do, but what you want and don't want to do. It would influence your emotions, and thus, your will, and never cause you any pain. Its influence would then be undetectable, because you could do what you want at all times, except when being hindered by outside influences. Nothing would feel different. Only what you want to do would be different from what you'd want to do without it.
Would it still be wrong to use such a thing? Yeah...we all answer yes. But: why? And "Because I feel it's wrong" is not acceptable as an answer. Also consider that we all don't know how far we're programmed. We assume we're free but we don't know.
Good night!

Here's a somewhat provocative question I'll give you before I leave for the night:

Yes. It would be worse than something that acts as a failsafe by causing you pain or killing you when you take certain actions. One of the things that makes people people is the capacity to make moral judgments and to choose, for better or for worse. Take away the ability to make those decisions (even if you can't act on them) and man becomes an organic robot who's only following his programming. Free will is sacred for me.

Yes, I have ducked in here once or twice before. I was thinking about going through with the Liara romance and intending to contribute on her thread, but that thread alienated me due to too much politics. So here I am.
