I'm Polish. Yvonne Strahovski is Polish. So techically Miranda is Polish too! Awesome!

Yvonne Strahovski is Australian. So, technically, Miranda is Australian as well.

Yvonne is Aussie, but her parents moved there from Poland not long before she was born.

Speaking of fic. And fair warning, Ieldra: you'll hate this story. Miranda's self-loathing is in evidence, the it has a more concrete reason than I usually give. More Atoner than Broken Ace.

Miranda didn't believe in God, but she was beginning to believe in purgatory. It looked remarkably like Black Horse Foods' Citadel branch. David Prescott, Vice President of Research and Development and her nominal superior, sat across from her. He leaned back in his chair, as if he wanted to put as much distance between them as possible. He was a lean, fit man in his mid-fifties. It wasn't good publicity for the executives of a health food company to be fat. He drummed his fingers on the desk. "Dr. Lawson, I've reviewed your report. Frankly, I find your concerns baseless."

Miranda could feel the irritation settling over her like an itchy blanket. This was the worst thing about civilian life: being second-guessed by fools. For all his faults, the Illusive Man had been competent and he had trusted her to be the same. He never would have dismissed her warnings outright. Especially when there were problems with the project visible to anyone with eyes. "The current formulation of Skale could be hacked by a child. How long do you think it will be before some stupid kid hacks the safety protocol so he can starve himself?"

"We can't be held responsible for unauthorized use of our product."

"We can if it's an easily foreseeable outcome." She shifted slightly in her seat. "I'm not asking you to scrap the project. Just delay it long enough for me to tighten up the safety protocols. It shouldn't take more than a few weeks. Two, three at the outside."

"And several million credits." He frowned. A muscle in his jaw twitched. Once, twice. Miranda exhaled. She'd learned Prescott's moods well enough in the month that she'd been here. He wouldn't listen to a word she said. "I wasn't aware medical doctors were competent in matters of nanotech security. The project will proceed as planned."

Miranda wasn't really a doctor, of course—Cerberus valued knowledge far more than formal credentials—but presenting herself as a physician had seemed to be the easiest way of securing a job that would provide relative comfort for her and Oriana without exposing her sister to undue danger. And Mordin had been a doctor. It had seemed the perfect way of honoring her fallen colleague. She was beginning to regret her choice. "I see. If you'll excuse me, I have a lunch appointment." Prescott couldn't miss the ice in her voice unless he was even stupider than she'd imagined, but Miranda was past caring. Let him fire her.

Zakera Ward was as lively and bustling as ever. Miranda threaded her way through the crowd of turians, salarians, and humans. Advertisements hawking everything from shaving cream to lingerie flashed along the walls. Miranda ignored him, though they were slightly less obnoxious than the various political advertisements that had dominated months ago. She winced. Miranda had resolved not to think of those days Shepard had made it quite clear after the Collector base mission that he didn't want her anywhere near him or his ship. She refused to return to Cerberus. All she had now was her sister and a job she despised. Not a bad deal for a murderer, but the memories bubbled up all the same.

She was bored. Prescott's callous disregard for the life of his customers wasn't really that surprising. Her father had been just as bad. She was vaguely insulted that she was being asked to tacitly suborn that callousness for nothing more than money. The Illusive Man had at least covered his lust for power with platitudes about strengthening humanity as a whole and made her believe him. Six months ago, she had raised a man from the dead. Three months ago, she had helped save untold thousands of humans from being pulped by the Collectors. That she was now reduced to developing diet drugs seemed an indignity not to be born. Her father had built her to achieve, to be the best. Anything less was an insult to the sisters who had died when she had lived. But she needed a cause, direction, resources. All three were denied her. Shepard didn't want her. She had burned her bridges with Cerberus when she'd refused to kill him. The Council and the Alliance would arrest her on sight if they knew who she was. The Shadow Broker only cared about his own power, and she was done supporting tyrants. Assuming he didn't kill her for her role in recovering Shepard's corpse. There was nothing left to do except protect Oriana as best she could and hope and opportunity presented itself.

I find that Miranda hating her life this much is just plain implausible.

I'm inclined to agree with siha. Well, her hating her life is plausible, but I don't think she would dwell on it as much. Miranda strikes me as more of a doer than a talker.

This is an interesting scenario. What would Miranda do if she somehow pissed off both Shepard and Cerberus and wound up adrift? After wiping out the Collectors, what do you do for an encore? I think of Garrus as someone who could be a great man but is cursed by the lack of a great cause - but it fits Miranda well also. Although it does seem surprisingly unjust that Shepard kicked her off the Normandy after she sided with him against Cerberus, so I wouldn't mind having a better understanding of what happened there.

This is bleak, but I don't find her inner dialogue implausible. If she hates her life here, well, it sounds like she's been handed a s--- sandwich. I'm sure she's going to solve her problems, but there's no reason she can't be upset. The only thing I would change is having her tell her problems to someone - like Oriana, or a sympathetic ex-Normandy crewmate - rather than narrate them.

Also, I might be missing some backstory, since I don't know why she refers to herself as a murderer.

"Hating her life" seems like an overstatement.  Seems more like a person doing the best she can in a less than ideal scenario, just like anybody else.  I don't find anything in the scenario implausible.

Next time, just call me Katie guys and gals. Anyways, it's more likely that Miranda would work as an independent info broker than an unhappy, depressed scion for some jackass, given her contacts and her background in intel gathering. And Shepard telling Miranda to GTFO is impossible too. Shep isn't stupid, he knows his Normandy won't function properly or even not at all without Miranda as his XO. Jacob, Mordin and Garrus can't do it because they hate paperwork with a burning passion (and according to my dad, who used to be in the SAS, there is A LOT of paperwork after even a small op), and simply put, nobody else can do the work Miranda did.

@jtav:
I have to say that I find it somewhat implausible to see Miranda in that kind of work, except if you use it as a starting point and she does it strictly to get over a hard time. I would hate to see her put up with it for the sake of....well, whatever. I also dislike the Atoner angle as much as the Broken Ace, but you knew that. Your writing is slick as usual, but as you said it likely won't be my favorite story. Especially if it involves Miranda/Liara *again*.
I wish you would continue your Miranda/Kaidan story....

@Katie:
Shepard telling Miranda to GTFO isn't implausible if he believes she was responsible for Akuze and he is a Sole Survivor. It may not be the smartest move professionally, but we all know canon Shepard can be really stupid at times. And since it's fanfic, there's no reason he can't get another XO from...whereever.

Who said anything about Liara, Ieldra? Remember when you said you wamted to see Atonement contibued? fongiel and I talked it over, and a game novelization is impractical. She'll be back to super-scientist in less than a chapter.

I'm looking forward to it. Your stories so far have all been at least interesting, which is more than I can say of most fanfics.

Thanks, guys. I'm kind of chuffed that you're split down the middle. Miranda's limited in what she can do because she's personally protecting Oriana, so spy work's out for the moment. As soon as she gets an offer to do the impossible again (and she will), she'll be all right. Shepard is more than justified in his actions. Miranda asked for bodies of people killed by threshers for experiments. She meant pirates, but she took the marines despite being furious. Said experiments led directly to Lazarus. I don't think murderer is the right word, but she is culpable.

Here is a somewhat off-topic question but I wanted to see what you all thought:

In my original run through ME:1, I couldn't stand Liara and so, I thought Ashley was a reasonable option as I liked the more aggressive attitude.  However, her comments on Horizon really didn't settle well with me and so I went back, created a new Shep who didn't really have any interaction with her.

Though Miranda has some serious attitude issues at first, she tends to act much more mature and professional than Ashley.  I was wondering though, what do you all think of a comparison between the two characters?

There is something of a comparison in the OP, which covers most of it, I reckon.

@lastpatriot:

Fire and Ice, that's Ashley and Miranda. See the OP. They're also diametrically opposed in several other aspects. Both are strong personalities in their respective ways, though. I don't think they'd get along very well, if at all.

To be honest, I didn't read that part of the OP but after going back, it does make an interesting point and comparison of the two characters.

My character's RP concept was that he was a colonist and so he lived most of his life alone - by himself.  I also built it around the war-hero concept but only out of a sense of revenge against the slavers.  In general, he's paragon and wants to the right thing though the scars from the past make it difficult at times.  This also makes it very diffcult for him to trust anyone so in some ways, Miranda's attatude is something that he can understand.

On a side note, my Shep would really love to walk onto the CIC deck and not hear Kelly saying "Commander, you have a new message in our inbox."

Yes you have. Not denying that all and I've always been grateful. My next chapter is with my beta, so I'm expecting to post later this week.

In other news, it's been one year since I begin this fic. I'm surprised I'm still at it.

Out of all the Mass Effect fan fiction I have read, I have enjoyed your Fight for the Lost the most LuxDragon.  It is a tremendously deep and interesting tale that makes the Normandy crew and the Mass Effect universe come more alive
