Do any of the assassin abilities such as backstab apply if you are an archer and using a bow. I hate to think that they would create a specialization for a rogue and that you would not be able to make use of it just cause you decided laong before to be an archer.
It also wouldn;t make sence for Nathaniel in Awakenings. When you get him he is an assassin but his main weapon is a bow???
Confused as to how to progress with him
assassin - archer

Backstabs can only be performed with a Melee weapon. It doesn't matter what Melee weapon (you could backstab with a Maul, if you really, really wanted to), but a Backstab requires a melee weapon. The only reasons to get the Assassin spec on an archer are for the +2 Dexterity for being one (the crit chance only applies to melee), and for Mark of Death, though that's a short-range move, so it kind of defeats the point of being an Archer.

The best specs for archers are ranger or bard, followed by duelist and then legionnairre scout in Awakening. Assassin is pretty weak for an archer, but if you want, you can use a tome of respec on Nathaniel to "fix" him if you want to stick with the bow (and you do).

This is what I had thought but wanted to verify. I will probably do the tome of respec on Nathaniel
I find it very odd that they would put in a character with a specialization that gives him amost no benefit???

What about having a character use a spell they don't know? Anders uses Flame Blast when you first meet him, but doesn't actually know Flame Blast when he actually joins your party. Or there's Zevran equipping equipped with gear that he doesn't have the stats to equip. Putting a character into a useless specialization is actually par for the course.

While an Assassin is better used up close and personal, there are many occasions in the game where this will occur, especially for non-controlled members of the party. Having some default melee tactics is recommended, and Mark of Death seems to aid the entire party should that occur.

I believe i do have Nathaniel set up with mark of death in his tactics. Will check later when i play again. Still can't understand how/why they created a rogue specialization that is mostly useless to any rogue that decides to use a bow. I think they should create a specialization similar to assassin that has similar bonuses for ranged attacks from archers. I understand how backstab by nature is a melee attack but create something similar for ranged so ranged characters have a useful specialization option. That would be fun to use!!! Right now 2 of the 4 rogue specialization, assassin and duelist, are basically useless for archers. Pretty much limits your choices.

Duelist actually works fine with a Bow. Dueling works with Ranged weapons, and Pinpoint Strike can be used with a bow, but you have to activate it while using a melee weapon. The only skill you can't use with a Bow is Upset Balance.

Ranger and Duelist works well with bows. Duelist for when you get into melee and ranger with the pet adds to your dps.
