I've made a trailer to promote the story:

www.youtube.com/watch

The music featured is ‘From the Wreckage’ by Jack Wall and Sam Hulick, from the OST of the first Mass Effect game.

Enjoy.

Yes, but like the official novels and comics, it is written to fit into the existing continuity. So no matter how you played the games, this story will fit into your version of events. Though I've tried to get closer to Shepard than in the official novels/comics, and still preserve continuity.

If you read it you'll see what I mean - and it shouldn't take too long to finish. I wrote it to be short and easy to digest.

Is this official (as in, licensed/commissioned) fanfiction, as weird as it is to say that?

No, it is something I've written off my own back, and has not been commissioned by BioWare.

If you thought it was an official work though, then that is a good sign, and is something I was aiming for. I tried to make it stand alongside the official works (games, novels, comics), and above a lot of the fanfiction out there. I've read some good fanfiction, but in my opinion, a lot of it falls down in some basic areas of writing, which is a shame, as many have a good tale to tell. Also, many of the Mass Effect fanfics I've seen tend to focus on a specific kind of Shepard (complete with custom first name). There is nothing wrong with that, but I wanted to create something that would slot seamlessly into the already established lore, catering to everyone's experience of who Shepard is.

My other goals with the work were: to get closer to Shepard and Shepard's friends than the official novels and comics do; introduce an interesting and unique character (Tirahin), with a new plot line; give more background to one of the locales of Mass Effect 2.

Having read Nos Astra Nights, if you then go back and play Illium in ME2, I think you'll find that you have a more enjoyable experience, with the knowledge of NAN in the back of your mind. (Much like how reading the Redemption comics enhances Shepard's revival, and the meeting with Liara, in ME2).

With the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC nearing release, continuing Liara's personal quest, I'm interested to see what events take place. My fan-fiction, Nos Astra Nights, also touches on Liara's pursuit of the Shadow Broker, and though I wrote it before LotSB was announced, it was written such that it shouldn't break any continuity with regards to LotSB. Of course, I'll not be able to say for certain until I've played LotSB for myself, at which point I'll post a follow-up.

But for now, if you're looking for more Liara and Shadow Broker action, and you've not yet read NAN, check it out:

*Spoiler Alert: Nos Astra Nights and Lair of the Shadow Broker*

The third part of NAN takes place just prior to when Shepard recruits Samara in ME2. In this third part, Tirahin meets Liara in her office in Nos Astra. If the player plays LotSB before recruiting Samara, it means that at the time when Tirahin meets Liara, Liara shouldn't be on Nos Astra - she should be on the Shadow Broker's ship. Dang.

So how do I explain that Liara is back on Illium to bump into Tirahin? She forgot something. She needed access to data on her old terminal. Something like that. And the dialogue between Liara and Tirahin is deliberately ambiguous so as not to betray what may or may not have happened by that point. It's a bit of a hack, but I could buy that.

Just shows the difficulty of writing fan fiction that ties closely to the games, and still tries to remain consistent with every conceivable way that the games can be played. My next ME story will be intentionally away from the game plots, and if I can get a good enough handle on UDK, it will be in machinima form.
