Let's have the system and the OS' specifications, plus the temperature numbers you are getting when it happens.

CoolerMaster CM690 Nvidia Edition - Intel Core i7 950 3.7Mhz - CoolerMaster V10- ASUS Rampage II Extreme (Bios 1802) -ASUS GTX285 Matrix (x2 SLI) - OCZ 60GB SSD(x5/Raid0) - OCZ Blade 6GB 1866MHz CL7-7-7-28 - ULTRA X3 850w PSU - WIN7 ULt. 64bit.
All Temps are normal on both GPU's and my CPU. So I ruled that out before posting this and thats why it's so confusing why this is happening.

Also what are the versions of your video and audio drivers? This sounds like an OS software (directx, registry, etc.) or driver (video, sound, chipset, etc.) issue. The hard restart of the PC indicates that your Windows kernel has something bad inside it and it is locking up.

I'm using all the latest versions of Nvidia drivers and DirectX will also check for updates on sound and chipset drivers

So you are using the June 2010 DirectX?????
What about the 257.15 Beta nVidia driver?????
Please when I asked for driver versions, I did not mean "latest". This word "latest" has absolutely NO MEANING!!
So what are the numeric version numbers of your nVidia, audio, etc drivers?
Did you know that some recent nVidia driver versions would turn off the fan and allow the card to melt down and die? You might want to be a bit more accurate than "latest". Just suggesting, but they are your cards.....

If you haven't downloaded the patch 1.01 yet, then do so! If you have, or after you get it downloaded, put it on a blank, writeable disk that uses the same format as ME2 (CD). Then close out all your windows and load the patch from the CD to the ME2 files on your computer, NOT the files on the disk. To do this, search mass effect 2 in whatever place allows you to do this in the start menu. Select the result that says mass effect 2 with a little icon that looks like a file. Once you have the patch successfully in the ME2 files, configure the game in the game's main menu where it says "play","customer support", "downloadable content", and things like that.

By the way, you don't need any system specs to do this.
