I'm currently running an Arcane Warrior through Origins, and will soon be importing her into Awakening. Now, in Awakening, the Blackmarsh has several things of interest that are making me want to go there first. They include:
* Sentinel Armor
* Soulbound Ring
* Fade Bonuses
* Eldest Dragonbone for Vigilance
All in all, the Blackmarsh is looking more and more like the place I want to go first. The issue is what happens with the Joining bug. Does not putting Sigrun or Velanna through the Joining make them unusable? Or can I use them regardless?

The issue with the Joinig will appear if you choose to enter blackmarsh first. But yes, you will be able to use them regardless if one of them haven't done The Joining.
Becuase of the armor and fine items you can find there i always choose to enter Blackmarsh almost as soon as i can.

Good. I don't particularly care if they go through the Joining or not, as long as I can actually use them if I decide I want to.

Theres a trick you can do to get them both Joined if you go to Blackmarsh first. After you recruit Velanna or Sigrun you can go back to the keep before completing their quest and get them joined. Yes it doesn't make sense because they haven't asked for the joining yet, but you can just pretend you did it afterwards =p
