Sadly mages are in fact the best class. You could try being a two handed warrior and just pumping strength. If you want more in dept help you need to register your game to post in the spoiler forums.

rogues: hard to hit and massive damage if played right.

There's no BEST class. It depends on your play style. From what your writing, it seems like you'd want to play as a warrior. What build? There's no BEST build either. It depends on how you want to progress your warden's stats. For a first playthrough the guy to your left decided to dual-wield two long swords and kept pumping his stat points into strength, dexterity, and constitution. I've heard that constitution is kind of useless though (I've been playing Bioware RPG's for like 6 years now and still don't quite get all of their intricacies :P) so I'd focus on just pumping strength and dex. Or you can go with a trusty sword and shield build. I find that build good and simple, plus the finishers are pretty sick. I wouldn't write off playing as a mage dude, by the end of the game, you're pretty strong and their origin story is one of my favorites. But then again..... rogues do get to pick locks and summon animals if they specialize as a Ranger. Basically, there is no right way to go about it. I'm gonna say go with shield and sword warrior.

For dual wield warriors you really can't go much wrong with the dual wield tree, all the talents are pretty solid (with some outstanding). Dual wield berserker is a good idea.

With a dual wield warrior the most important attribute is dexterity, because the two handed skills base on that. The second important attribute is constitution, because this char doesn't have the toughness of a shield warrior.

Strength should come in the third place because damage comes through the two weapons combined with your skills.

For me mage is and not just because they are the most powerful but when I play I micromanage one player and let the rest run on tactics. You must micromanage your attack mages (healers work fine) or else they'll friendly fire your party out of existence. For that reason, it is always more satisfying for me to play as the mage.

I think the rogue class is best myself becuase it can interact with the game world in more ways than pretty much any other class. The combat in the game is not so difficult that one needs an uber power build to be successful so pretty much any character you want to make can handle their share of the combat with a suitable party in tow.

The rogue is no exception. Both the DW and Archery trees are decent options and you can even take a bit of both if you like for a well rounded jack of all trades type.

Only the PC can effect conversations so rogue with their high cunning and extra skill points helps out there as well.

Specialization options abound depending on your characters demeanor or personality from assasin to ranger to bard to duelist or any mix of those you choose.

As others have said there is of course no "best" class but I find myself playing rogues more often than any of the others - warriors are pretty one dimensional and I've nevr been too fond of playing finger waggling mage types anyway so there ya go -

If there are any real differences in "power" between the classes they are narrow enough to be, to all intents and purposes, irrelevant. A player is better advised simply to choose the class they will find most enjoyable.

I think that a rogue assassin is best especially with maxed out stealth

Personally my favourite was a duel wielding, arcane warriror with both healing and destructive magic. You don't like mages so I'd advise a duel wielding warriror or rogue. With rogue, upgrade lockpicking and stealth is pretty good. Try ranger, for a fifth party member. For warrior I went once again for duel wielding. Champion and beserker are probably the best, but I never really cared much for their specialisations. Rogue has the most interesting specialisations, but I still prefer mages.
