Just 1 lesson: continuity.

Don't ask us to invest to much time and heart into our character, wade through seas of moral dilemmas, make life and death decisions.... and then disregard all of that in the very first expansion.

In one word:

WTF?!

Just as an aside: while I understand the desire behind it, just because you enjoyed a story doesn't indicate any sort of promise that it will continue beyond that one story. Take it and its character(s) for what they were, and if we continue them into future stories than awesome-- but we've not indicated our plans one way or the other.

David, could you at least give us a hint as to what is coming next?

No.

Granted, you as developers are free to take the story into any direction you desire. What we, as fans, can do is let you know if we enjoyed a particular story or characters and express our hope of seeing these things continue in the future.

For sure. I get it. There's a difference between expressing hope and trying to establish that a promise was made based on a vague epilogue, however. That said, no matter which direction we go in I don't think anyone wants to disregard continuity completely.

Don't forget, David, that regardless of what you do the forums will fill with disappointment and rage.
The internet truly proves the old adage, "You can't please everyone."

Sigh.

Yes, this is true. I can't wait to hear how many dogs I've personally kicked, despite the fact that it's not really up to me what direction the series takes. Image IPB

I apologize if we're giving you a hard time with our expectations, but considering we can only focus on things we currently have in front of us I hope it's at least understandable.

Oh yes, it's just my habit to engage in expectation management. Fans like to build up this "perfect game" in their head which has very little bearing on what's practical, economical or even what we're really thinking for ourselves... and then take it very personally when that game is taken away from them. And until they see what it's been replaced by they'll instead dwell only on what they believe they've lost. Perfectly understandable, and even a bit complimentary in a way (as such emotional engagement should be)... regardless of how headache-inducing it can sometimes be. Image IPB

You are a terrible spokesperson for Bioware. Someone from PR should put a leash on you, take away your internet while in the office. Seriously, the things I've seen you post about the future of Dragon Age seems to be completely predicated on the fact that you hate that fans, ie: people who pay you, have opinions about the game. What they liked, what they didn't like. You guys ripped off a lot more than George Martin's story for this game (and I use the term rip off instead of inspire because you ripped him off), you took his attitude against the fans too. If the fans say they don't like something then you pop up on here and say: "So what? I do what I want. And I want to do something you all hate. So there."

I'm always happy to listen to feedback when it is reasoned and offered politely. If you ever have any feedback of that sort to offer, I'm sure we'd all be delighted to hear it.

I'm sticking with other companies after seeing your comments. I'm willing to give Bethesda another chance after reading these message boards for a couple of days. The Witcher blows away your game anyway, and I imagine the Witcher 2 (where the devs are HAPPY to listen to the fans) will blow away Dragon Age 2.

If that's the attitude you intend to take to Bethesda's or CDProjekt's  forums, I can't imagine why they wouldn't be happy to have you. I have it on good authority that most devs live for the moment when someone treats them like a waiter at their beck and call, and to be accused of being hateful when they respond to comments with anything but abject obeisance. It's always made me sad that the majority of the people here on these forums tend to be thoughtful and enthusiastic, even if they do get carried away on occasion. Our loss, I guess?

Good luck with your future purchases. I hope you enjoy them more than you clearly enjoyed Dragon Age.

I don't know if I am mistaken for treating a game company like a retail company, but I think Gaider's manners are pretty bad.

No offense, but if you're expecting that we should act like we're waiting on your table or standing behind a retail counter to take your order then, yes, you are mistaken. There is a customer service department for that, if you're interested, or the retail outlet where you intend to buy your games. I enjoy feedback, both receiving it and offering it, and that's what these forums are for--but if the expectation is that devs should come here, agree with everything someone has to say no matter how rude they are and answer all questions like a politician to avoid someone's feathers getting in a ruffle... well, is it any wonder more of us don't do it?

This is not my job. I come here for fun, to hear what fans might have to say and to throw in my two cents where I can (which is not that often). The "fun" on some of those days is clearly pretty questionable, however.

Perhaps I'll just go back to work. Have fun, and take care. Image IPB

wow...so dragon age story is a ripoff of a Martin's book??? i always thought that it was a ripoff of lord of the rings story :P

If one wishes to make a superficial analysis you can draw comparisons between almost any major fantasy series. The fact that one can make such comparisons (so long as you omit anything which is inconveniently different) is nothing new-- as you mention, the Lord of the Rings comes up just as often on these forums, as does the Witcher and even the Wheel of Time. One person's "inspired by" may be another person's "ripped off", depending on how much you enjoy the parts that are similar I guess, but either way such superficial analysis is not particularly revealing is it?

P.S
I think that the story created by machinima for warden fall is very interesting.... i hope they will inspire dragon age 2 story

I agree-- I think they did great stuff.

Well, I agree about everything except the "inspire" part. Wouldn't want someone rushing to the forums to accuse us of "ripping off" machinima, now, would we? What would people think? Image IPB
