Dragon Age 2 will presumably have a story.

If you want a great story, awesome characters, choices that matter and proper interaction with the world you're playing in then get DA:O.

Well, actually, the Diablo series are not entirely devoid of story. Quite the contrary. The trademark cinematics are beyond stunning, augmenting the feeling that you're in an epic movie. The difference is storyline impact. Diablo is the sort of game where everything unfolds, albeit visually stunningly, in a linear fashion...wheras DA:O is all about choice. Also, I think many people like the Diablo series because it seriously caters to your inner powergamer. There are typically so many skill and feat options available that you can easily say no two character builds are the same.

You can immerse yourself into the world of Dragon Age - interact with its characters and locales in a way that leaves you thinking about the game long after you've Quit for the day. I find myself thinking about my character and the game while riding the bus or taking a walk or sitting in the sun. I'm still playing the game even though I'm not on my computer. Yeah, I've got it bad and loving it!!!!

And if by "unfolds" you mean someone telling you a short story and then tells you "Go kill some stuff", weeeell...
I am not saying Diablo III will be bad, I'm just saying it's hard to compare diffrent type of games. I personally love both series.

Me too
When I close my eyes, I see a monitor and my character killing people.
And I make plans for my next level up and inventory upgrades.

I don't understand how people can't compare stuff just because they aren't the same genre.-Semper- wrote...
not even the same sport and therefore you can't compare them
It's all about personal preference so you can compare any game you like.
I prefer KOTOR over Crysis, Burnout Paradise over WarCraft 3, Tekken over NWN, GTA over Prince of Persia, MGS over Mass Effect, The Witcher over Just Cause, Max Payne over NBA Live, DAO over Lego Star Wars, Monkey Island over God of War, Devil May Cry over Two Worlds, almost any game over Diablo etc etc.

Well, of course there is an overall story in Diablo games. The problem is that your character has no way of interacting with the world he's in besides killing things, getting quests or buying/selling equipment. You can't even say a single sentence during the whole game. There are no choices to be made.
And while it is interesting to try out different classes, the game will still play out the same. You'll just have new spells and abilities.

you can prefer but you can't compare - these are two completely different things. to keep games as the topic you've to break things down and compare the engine or the game length or the combat style but never the whole game.

People can argue that ME2 isn't an RPG and stuff (and by your logic not comparable to ME1), but in the end the majority prefers ME2 over ME1
