Then ME2 came along and the shadows were improved vastly. I knew it could be possible to achieve the same shadowing in ME1.
Here's how i've done it.
Open your ME1 BioEngine.ini and change the following:
Under [Engine.GameEngine]
bEnableBranchingPCFShadows=True to False
bEnableVSMShadows=False to True
I'd recommend settings shadows resolutions at default (min=32 and max=512)
Under [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice]
DisableHWShadowMaps=True to False
